.....doesnt the wattage have to be 10 times as big to just double the DB level, or am i talking tosh?
I believe that's the case too and Alex's 'Mythbusters' info confirms this: http://barefacedbass.com/technical-information/mythbusters1.htm

Hi All, Now sold but details left up for future reference. Purple Chili Phatt Bass 750W amp from 2012. It's a hybrid amp of the valve pre-amp and class D power amp variety. The pre-amp is (as supplied) a Denis Cornell hand wired creation that utilises 3 x 12AX7 valves. It has Active and Passive inputs, Gain (which starts to colour and distort the more you crank it up), Bass, Middle, Treble and Volume controls. It does 560W @8 ohms, 750W @4 ohms and 1,100W @2 ohms!!! On the 2 ohm subject Purple Chili said this: "We did test the amp at all ohmages including 2 Ohms, and it seemed O.K. but I would not want to say it would be fine for long periods at this ohmage. If you run it at 2 ohms and it cuts out, it will switch back on after cooling, as there is a safety overheat switch inside. What I mean is, you can't blow it up as it will auto cut out before that happens as part of it's safety features." It's in very, very good condition and sounds great.

As with any bass manufacturer the CS make good ones and, er, not so good ones. The usual advice of 'try before you buy' to make sure it is the one for you is just a prevalent. This gets murky when there's not too many about and the situation where you have to order the bass blind. All IME/IMO of course and YMMV

Does changing the bridge make much difference?
Noisyjon replied to Twangster's topic in Bass Guitars
I met Bill Nash in the Westside shop on Denmark Street once and he said adding a higher mass bridge to a Fender type bass with a BBOT is one of the best things you can do for it. I'm from the thinking of I like the fine tuning some offer (thinking Hipshot A type with Fender mounting) and IMO the better sustain they seem to offer. -
Serious Question To Those Who Use A Full Stack
Noisyjon replied to MindGoneBlank's topic in Amps and Cabs
...a full stack just ticking over has a degree of clarity than a combo struggling to keep up simply doesn't. It also brings the top cab up to a height where I can hear what I'm doing without having to rely on the monitor mix....
This for me too but think of your back in this decision. Stacking 4x10's is no mean feat on your own. -
I'm not overly sure how compression works. Is it like cutting out certain frequencies to boost a more pure signal? I've been advised by a few people a compressor would be great for my tone but I have no idea about them. Any tips on what they're used for and which one you'd recommend?
In the olden days compressors were also known as levellers, which to me is a more descriptive and useful name. Basically they automatically turn down the louder parts of the sound so that they match the quieter parts of the sound and can do this quickly or slowly and by how much. Those parameters are all be set by the controls. In bass guitar terms this is the volume balance between the strings. My advice is the MXR Bass Compressor and a good read of BOD2's thread on this topic: http://basschat.co.u...s-and-limiters/ All the best, Jon
