Just goes to show what creatures of habit we bass players are Any good quality pots, jack sockets or caps will do just fine. Sprague Orange Drop indeed!
Oh yeah, I'm totally with you there Stevie.
Just helps when selling stuff on if you have industry standard parts in there!
+1 to CTS pots. Also I'd recommend a Switchcraft jack socket and a Sprague Orange Drop capacitor to round it off nicely!
Have a ganders HERE for a standard P bass wiring diagram with component values, etc.
Cheers,
Jon.
I would recommend getting a Compact and then saving up for another one in due course.
They are pretty sensitive speakers in there and a 300W amp will be fine.
I run 2 x Compacts with a MarkBass SA450 and the stack is plenty loud enough, with volume to spare, for a LOUD rock band so am speaking from experience here.
Good luck on your quest!
Jon.
Hi Jon. I currently have the one cab but am picking up the other one next week. To be honest I'm happy for most gigs with just the one but worry that there may be occasions on larger gigs where I might just need that little bit more. In terms of sound, I think the combination of amp and cab is superb and the fact that I can carry all the kit I'll need for the night from car to venue in one go is a huge bonus.
Oh, I see. In that case you won't be disappointed!
The 2 Compacts stacked on top of each other are great. The output power is truly trouser flapping
Back on track with this topic - I think I may need to get some of these Iso blocks...
...two BF Compacts and a MB SA450 sitting on top...
Hey Rowbee, I've got the exact same setup! How you getting on with yours?
I love the combination and sounds coming out of it.
Cheers,
Jon
How about buying a bass out there that can be brought home and sold on/kept/whatever?
A nice bolt on neck bass can be dis-assembled and packed into your case for ease of transport.

JTB
Bass will be great through a DI and a guitar will not.
A guitar needs the amp to supply the final part of it's sound, i.e. distortion, effects, etc, so a mic in front of the guitar amp is the way to do it.
Does that help?
Cheers,
JTB
WOW - Very nice. Would love to hear it in action with you Fender Duff Jazz Bass Special.
Do play in a GNR tribute band Chris? If not you should with that setup
If I were to be buying new, for £400 and in your shoes I'd go for a Behringer amp & Behringer 4x10" cab to get going with. Then in time you can add another cab, when funds permit, to really beef things up. Have a look at Digital Village's website for some good prices on Behringer gear.
I've used that stuff at rehersal rooms for years and it does keep up well with the guitars & drums IME.
Otherwise keep 'em peeled on here for a great 2nd hand bargain!
Regards,
Jon.
Fender used to make a 1955 Precision bass Relic. That would be a good starting if you can find one second hand?
Have a look at this link HERE for an idea.

Jon
Maybe some detailed pictures of the bass with some close ups of the bridge, pickup, headstock, etc will help us see if there's an obvious problem with your bass.
Also this will help identify what P bass you have exactly.
Regards,
Jon
...I understand why Hugh isnt credited but but i still think it stinks. Especially when the backing singers get close ups yet Hugh doesn't....
Maybe part of it is him asking to not be featured?
Ok, that makes sense, thanks. So what's with the "1- = -" and "1+ = +" on the cab?
I think that's just a way of pointing out that 1- means negative and 1+ means positive.
BTW be careful with your GK amp as they can require different connections inside the Speakon connector to work. I would suggest you PM OBBM to find out what's what on that subject as I'm not 100% on that.
