A missing apostrophe makes a lot of difference in this months 'The Low Down'.
Uhum! If we are being pedantic about missed apostrphies, should that not be month's
Tokai Jazz sounds have always had a good reputation. I have a 1984 model and it's great. Had it defretted in the late '80s and it produces that lovely fretless jazz sound just fine with halfwound strings.
I have a fretless 4 string. For me the neck is a dream to play. I have it strung with TI Jazz Flats and they give it a lovely sound. I never use the mag pup but the bridge pup has a lovely sound, good deep tone and as zig-zag said, lots of mwah.
+another one on the strings. Maybe try a set of halfwounds (ground or preasure wound, depending on manufacturer). They have some of the brightness of rounds but the smoothness of flats. Strings are a bit cheaper than a new bass last time I looked.
Stentor make basses that sell over a wide price range. I can't speak for the cheaper models but I have an Arcadia which cost £1500. It is a lovely bass for my ability. Most Stentors are made in Eastern Europe but they may have some cheaper models made in China. They are a good brand with a good reputation.
If you are just starting out I would suggest buying a cheaper model to start with. That way if you don't take to it you don't loose so much. Check the setup of the instrument. How high is the action and what strings are on it? These are things that might need altered or changed to get a better sound out of it. A good set up might set you back anything up to £100 so bear that in mind when buying.
It's certainly worth trying DB. They have a sound like no other bass and if you become quite proficient at it you'll never be short of work.
What a liberty! Putting porn like that on the net. Three Statii and a Rob Allen, some of the best bases on the market. The Deep 5 is lovely and it goes without saying so are the Statii. What does the Allegro sound like?
Have a bump on me. That is a fantstic bass and you have a right to price it any way you want. Sorry I don't have the money available for it. I'll just dream.
gorgeous, molecule, just gorgeous. Glad to see another Status fretless, there aren't many that get shown off here or on Statii.com either. Bet it makes a nice sound through the SWR.
You might have to wait a bit for a reply as the subs lady is not always in the office. I did the same about the December issue and actually received a phone call about my query.
That looks great eude. Alan makes some of the best looking singlecuts out there. The colour combinations work really well and the wenge neck looks like a dream. Look forward to hearing the sound sometime.
WOW!!! That is stunning. I don't know where there is space to put any chambers. I'd love to hear some sound samples of that. Bet the bridge pickup sounds really woody and warm. Oh, I'm green with envy. I'd love a go on it. Bit too far away though, Ah well, c'est la vie.
It's a slightly unusual combination I suppose but the Markbass cab really brings out the power in the Contra. Wednesday was the first time I had it out on a gig and the guys in the band just looked at it and though "too loud". Just because it's big doesn't mean it has to be loud. They weren't saying that at the end of the gig.
The Status is great. Unfortunately the photo doesn't show the quality of the quilted maple face.
Don't know if I could call them twins as they were born 24 years appart. Maybe mother and daughter. Status S2 Classic, fretless, 2008, and fretted Status Series 2000, 1984.
Here's my current rig, Acoustic Image Contra with Markbass 1x15 cab I bought from board member mxm. My fretless Status S2 sounds great through the eq in my Zoom B2.1u, just a lovely sound.
With Miss Maple, Status S2 Classic fretless
Could I just add one comment regarding "drilling out holes". A friend of mine who builds furniture made an interesting point about drilling out holes. When you drill the hole out you take all that wood away. Using a bradawl leaves the wood there but provides a guide hole for the screw and the wood will settle in round it.
Otherwise great, clear instructions.
I have a Spectorcore fretless which I love. Granted it has a mag pup but I never use that. Lovely acousticy sound with TI Jazz Flats on it. I use it in jazz quite a lot and it fits that format just fine for me. I think they retail around £600. I got mine for £349 from Sound Control, remember them.
Any DB string should do for CR4Ms as long as they have a steel core. Without that they won't work with the mag pups. Helicore Hybrids, Helicore Orchestral, Pirastro Flexocors, and Pirastro Obligatos seem to have been used a lot.
EDIT: Strike the Obligatos unless you don't want to use the mag pups. They have a synthetic core.

This sounds like excuses that have been used by other music mags that have folded in the past. If they can't get mags out to subscribers before the shops that's pretty poor service. We are, after all, the people who give them regular income. What future for BGM???
Anyway, I hope you find the swine that took an axe to them statii!
Huh!!! What a Philistine.
Heh! That's how basses are meant to be, Ste. They balance better and you don't knock into stuff all the time. Perfection!
Now there's a man who knows what a bass should look like.
Yes, fantastic collection there Rich. See you went for the Genz Benz. How are you finding it? The S2s really are the best lookers. The myrtle face is a work of art. Rob chose that so well.
Oh Rich, how could you show such obcene pictures. I think the moderators should pull you up on that one.
But seriously, I am green with envy. Is there a bass on the market that Nick does not own. Just some beauties there. Lucky guys.
