Obscure Musical Backwaters - The Great SGC Nanyo Thread
BassBus replied to Happy Jack's topic in Bass Guitars
Don't say that, 'cos I am tempted. Two birds, one stone? (i.e. I'd like to try a fretless... lol)
Well try it. It's not as difficult as you might think and as Roger2611 siad "none better than a bass collection to learn with". -
Just watched that on iPlayer. Yes a bit shakey but sounded more to do with not enough rehearsal than anything. Her comment at the end "glad I remembered it" said as much.

Thanks. Never seen Gladiator so have to look that up.

Unbelievably, people are still trying to defend the 80s.

Happy days when the big name pop acts of the time were allowed to write their own songs, record them playing the instruments themselves and not wholly relying on Autotune. -
No brain for bass? MH issues and playing
BassBus replied to GreeneKing's topic in General Discussion
I'm always happy to see men opening up about their mental health. Best attitude to have. It can only encourage other's to do the same. Playing is for fun, you don't have to be of the equal to Jaco or Gary Willis. You are you and that's all that matters. All power to you. -
After attending a rather sad funeral yesterday (as if any funeral isn't sad) I was in a rather sombre mood. This is what came from it. Some improvised ambient chord swells. Let yourself dissolve in "Emma's Tears". http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ADnKhtwruz8

Nice. I particularly liked 04-22. Very soothing.

Anyone with any experience of half rounds on a fretless?
BassBus replied to Marc S's topic in Bass Guitars
I tried a set of Daddario's a few years back and didn't like them at all. The E sounded dead right out of the packet, maybe I just got a bad set.
This is a problem I have had with some sets of Half from D'addario and Status. One thing to try which might help avoid it is to bend the string at the length you want it. Then cut the string just past the cut. This should stop the outer windings from slipping on the core. Certainly what Rob Green at Status recommends. -
PS. I like the T.I.s quite a lot, in that they are lower tension than any other flat I've played, but sometimes, I think they're almost too low tension lol
If you like TIs that much then it would be worth looking at Chromes, Labella 760 and Cobalt flats. They have a simlar feel and tone to TI jazz flats. I have used TIs a lot as well and generally like them. I did try a set on my Overwater fretless and didn't like the tone. Put on a set of Labella 760FS and that was the fretless tone I have always looked for. They do a lower tension set as well, 760FL. -

I've used half wounds on fretless for years. Great tone, most of the brightness of a round but the smoothness of a flat. They are a bit sticky to begin with but the more you play them that goes away. They won't harm the fingerboard either. D'Addarios might be best at the moment. I have always used Status halfs but they are not available at the moment and no sign if they will ever return. You could also consider Labella 760FS or D'addario chromes. Flat wound strings but with a tone to die for, much brighter than a traditional stair rod flat and the flexibility of a round. Just my experience and I'm sure others will chime in with rounds not damaging fingerboards. That's not my experience. -
Sure you're not a bass player who plays guitar? You really do know how to play bass. Good stuff.

I want to miss this almost as much as the E word we're not allowed to mention here.
I want a P bass but think uncovered splits are ugly... That just me? Are they crucial to the P tone?
Halleluiah! I am not alone. They just look untidy and I am not keen on the tone from them. But then, I do like a darker tone than a single coil will ever produce. There are J style pickups available that have split coils in them. They might have a slightly different tone though as the coils are end to end. The P style pickup has the coils picking up sound from slightly different parts of the string which is probably what gives the distinctive tone.

Gauging string gauges and other acoustic bass problems...
BassBus replied to Powertripper's topic in Bass Guitars
Don't be afraid of adjusting the trus rod. Plenty of vids on Youtube to tell you what to do. Also have a look across the flat of the face of the bass. If there is a rise around the bridge area you might have problems. That's a luthier job to sort and might be expensive. If it's flat then maybe just a tweak of the trus rod might work. -
You're probably better to just make a patch that suits each room when you get there, maybe in the sound check. Each room will be different and even the same room will change depending on the number of people in it. Just my experience of 30 years playing live. Just be flexible.

I bought Paul's iPhone 6. Great condition and works a treat. Communications were quick with no hassle at all. Recommended.

Best looking Fender I've ever seen.

New improv track - advice needed on recording issue
BassBus replied to AdamWoodBass's topic in Recording
I think I can hear the noise you refer to. Does it just happen when you take your fingers off the strings? It sounds like a grounding issue with the bass. -
Managed to grab myself one of these beauties:
One of the prettiest single cuts on the market.

Have a look at Gary Willis' technique on YouTube. He uses exactly that to get dynamics. Gentle touch to play quietly then he can dig in a bit more at times to bring out something different.

Mark just bought my double bass. It is now in a good home where it will be played. Very easy to agree a price with. A gentleman and genuine bloke. Thanks Mark, enjoy the bass.

I play both but given the choice I would go with lines. "If lines were OK for Jaco then..." Just had to get that one in to annoy everyone. I get on OK without lines and you learn where your fingers go eventually but I do like the security of lines.
