1.
Synth bass in "pop hits" goes back much further than the DX7. How about Giorgio Moroder or Kraftwerk both from the early 70s almost a decade before the DX7 made it's debut...
Granted, but it was the 80s that saw synthesized bass explode. I remember reading about a lot of session bass players branching out into other areas in music during the 80s. How many session bass players did Stock Aitken and Waterman use on their hits?
2. I suppose it's similar to elctronic pianos and the real thing. The real thing has all the nuances that an electronic one will never have, no matter how good they are. Electronic bass has been used on pop recordings ever since the advent of the Yamaha DX7. Bass players still exist. Wouldn't worry too much. It is impressive though. Here's a comparison between electronic and real bass. Give me the real one any day. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yczr25WmgzE
3. Jumpin' Jehosifa, that is just the dogs dangly bits. Tight beyond belief. The Gibson guitar sounds fantastic and the horns are outstanding. I say that goes to 11.
4. The neck pickup is going to sound great through a bass amp.
5. I play a bit of Bouzouki. Great little instruments. All sorts of tunings can be used, most common being GDAE and GDAD. Playing traditional tunes is probably best with GDAE. I like GDAD for chords. As walbassist says the chord shapes are very different to guitar but as you only have four courses of strings there is less to get your fingers around. If you are looking for for one have a look at Hobgoblin's site. They usually have a broad range of prices and they are in the UK.
6. I think when it comes to music there are no shoulds or shouldn'ts. You only have your own ears to hear what you are playing. No use in setting things up from someone elses ears if you hate the tone. I do not like Fender basses. Some might say I'm wrong but I prefer a more modern style of bass and don't like to get stuck in tradition. We all have our own tastes and no-one can say we are wrong to have those tastes. Stick with the placement of your dirt that you like.
7. For me just buying for the cover artist would be a bit narrow. I subscribe annually. I often get onto youtube and look up artists and bands I don't know about. That way I can find new music I might like. If I don't like their music then I just move on to the next. Keeps an open mind about music in general.
8. I've never really liked the SG shape but the workmanship on this makes up for that in every possible way you can think of. Stunning!
9. Eh... we... u.... One of the most stunning finishes I have ever seen.
10.
Quick, come in and shut the door behind you !
OK, but what does that 310K beside Scott's YouTube mean?
11. ...and I second that recommendation. The movable pads help it hold any bass very well.
12. Perhaps the bands this guy is putting on just aren't very good.
13. I use the Pitch Fork too. You can select min/Maj 2 and Maj3, Perf 4 and 5, Maj6, min7, 1, 2 and 3 octaves above. You can also choose to have that note on its own or mix it in with the instrument tone. Faultless tracking too. The Boss harmoniser can also do that but can work within your own selected key.
14. Bolt-on fretted S2 with no lights would probably sell privately for around £12-1300 as a rough guide. Judging by used prices on the other two on the net I'd say strip the PRS out the equation.
15. Well Marcus Bell works there, is a big Status fan and inhabits these parts.
16. It does have free UK shipping. It costs a lot to throw a package around a delivery depot (allegedly).
17. I like that. Quite quirky in a good way. Given a like.
18. Impressive stuff. Love the EWI, fits in really well.
19. I use the TC Electronic Hall of Fame. Lovely warm tone to it and simple to use. If you want it simpler still with only one knob to turn try the Hall of Fame mini. Both have the advantage of the Tone Print so endless editing possibilities.
20. And here's the building process. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OgvWTZCrXYM
21. Well I'm getting old. At least that's my excuse.
