1. The Smart bass was at the 'cheap' end of Status. Don't let that put anyone off. They will be most exillent basses.
2. It's a defret as well. That was never born a fretless.
3. Another good one to learn from is Jason at Fodera who did a series a few months ago on the same subject. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cgmoRHr2cD8
4. Will he be selling some of his energy? He never seems to stop. Been a fan for some time now. Love his attitude and playing, great bass tone too.
5. How did your piece go at uni, ambient?
6. It's a puppet!
7. I'd say take a leaf out of Janek Gwizdala's book. Get yourselves onto every social media site possible. Write blogs on these sites as updates of what is happening with the band. Start now with the info on the recording. Starts to build up the interest. Look at how early record companies release they artists records to radio stations. Basschat, YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, and any other site you can think of. It doesn't cost anything but a bit of your time. Answer questions quickly and keep adding to blogs and updates regularly as this lets Google know you are active and might help you get up the search stats. I'm sure others will come in with their experience.
8. I think it very much depends on the piece of wood being used. With some pieces they open out into the most beautiful patterns. In that case why would you want anything other than book matched. On the other hand, a bass is not a symmetrical object so does it really need a symmetrical face on it? I'm happy if it's just a good looking wood on the face.
9.
The Hotel California is closed tonight. RIP
You can check out any time you like but you can never leave. There seems to be a spate of name deaths at this time every year. Sad times. But all these guys have burnt the candle at both ends.
10. Jason from Fodera recently did a series of videos on setting up your bass. All the videos are very clear and easy to follow. They take you through neck relief, action, intonation and all the tools you'll need to carry out the work. Follow them and you'll know exactly what to do. http://youtu.be/cgmoRHr2cD8
11. Absolute bargain for a brilliant pre amp. Buy it and be very happy.
12. I must be very wonky then (don't anyone comment on that ). That's an amazing shape.
13. This is interesting listening back to it again. I feel it is still a bit quiet. I feel there are times you could use the headroom a bit more so that some parts almost assault the ears. This would bring a lot more colour in to it. At present it is maybe a bit flat. Bringing some quieter parts up would bring more clarity to it. Just my observations from recent listening to more ambient pieces. I do like the way you have used the stereo spectrum. That works well. This is as valid a form of 'music' as any other. Without more avant garde music things might not move on at all. Think back to early Pink Floyd which had a strong ambient flavour to it, not that it was called ambient at the time. Look how they developed though.
14. Yeh, great musician and he even inspired Janek Gwizdala to raise the playing action on his bass.
15. Nice playing all of you. Only thing I would change is bringing the rhythm guitar a little more towards the centre of the stereo spectrum. But that's just nit picking cause that is all good stuff. Keep up the good work. You clearly enjoy it.
16. GarageBand is probably a good place to start. If you get on OK with that, as you have, then you can always purchase a more comprehensive DAW later. There are a few available for iPad these days.
17. I can only say what I use. I record into Cubasis on the iPad with very good results. Cost me £35 in the app store. Endless tracks you can record onto. Onboard effects as well drums and basic synths and samples. I put everything through an Alesis iodock as an interface but others are available such as the mentioned Aogee. You then have loads of effects apps you can use in conjunction with Audiobus.
18.
That's more like it! I usually like singlecuts, but the BTB looked ugly to me. This is nice.
What this man said. That is very pretty indeed. Jus a pity Ibanez necks are a couple of mm too thin for me. It is tempting though.
19. Can't believe Chris would take this long to build a bass. He does his own spraying too. Perplexed.
20. I have not used in a live context so cannot comment on that. The tracking is very good indeed. You might have to check your technique a bit but not by much. If you are using the models in it then you will have no trouble with tracking at all. I put the hex pickup on a cheapish Cort bass and it was very easy to install, as easy as the guitar. You just have to find a place on the bass to put the 'pod'. There is always the opotion of the new SY-300. I have no experience of that but does not use a hex pickup, just plug straight in.
21. The tow bar is the clincher for me.
22. I have the Boss RC-50 and I thought that needed a degree to operate. The RC-300 looks a lot more straightforward. Simple start/stop and record switches for the three tracks and an all stop switch. I do like the look of the Boomerang 3. Seems to be lots you can do with it and doesn't seem too complicated. Plus there is the opotion of the add on section. I'd be interested in others' opinions too.
23. You could try looking at the series of videos Fodera put up recently about setting up a bass. This one is for intonation which will definitely need to be checked. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jvm_DT0GHIM
24. I don't think it's a genuine Gibson though.
25. I seem to remember reading somewhere that the guys in Genesis and Pink Floyd started their working lives down the pit.
