    I have to confess to being a bit of a fan boy for Dave Reoame (Dave's World of Fun Stuff, youtube). He uses ordinary household surface cleaner to clean up fret board/finger boards. He then puts a few drops of linseed oil on and wipes it over the board. I have used lemon oil on my Rosewood and Ebony boards. All seem to work fine. Make sure there isn't any residue left from the oil though. Wipe it on and then off again.

    If your teacher is at all negative I'm not sure they will be much good as a teacher. The best way to teach is accentuate the positive. At least I think that's what some said. Enjoy the new life.

    This sound cloud link might help. I had the same dilemma a few years ago while doing the rebuild of my SGC Nanyo. It only gives examples for the bridge pickup which is the critical tone for me.     If you are considering a fiver ESP, bare in mind that string spacing is quite close. The nut on my fiver is only a couple of mm wider than my Strat.

    ESP LTD basses are some of the best value basses on the market. I liked them so much I bought two fretless Bs, 4 & 5 string. I really can't fault them for the price. They are not a match for custom basses but they will never be for their price. Necks are lovely. Good tone from them. My fretless four will be up for sale soon.

    Lot of good advice. One other important thing. Arrive at the venue with plenty of time to spare before the gig starts. That way you will be more relaxed and have your gear set up in plenty of time.

    Don't know if it helps but Status Graphite ship their new basses with UK Mail. They are worth a lot more than £1000.

    I have only used passive pups with J and U-Retros. These pre amps are so powerful on their own that I'm not sure of any advantage with active pups.

    I wouldn't worry too much about it. I did it for ten out of thirteen years in a band playing tunes from the 30s and 40s and I replaced a guy who played electric. Try telling Steve Swallow he's wrong. He's a monster talent on electric in jazz. Try using a semi-hollow with piezos in the bridge. Might temper some nae sayers.
