I would agree with over ear, you'll get a much wider tone frequency going through them. I've always used Sennheiser. The set I have just now handle low end really well and crystal clear top end too. Cost about £80. These look like mine. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sennheiser-Ergonomic-Closed-Back-Headphones-Incredible-Black/dp/B005N8W214/ref=sr_1_9?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1423737330&sr=1-9&keywords=Sennheiser

Well, a series 5000 went on ebay for £505 lately. That was in very good condition. As this has butchered electronics maybe start with a cheeky offer of £250 with that in mind. Not sure I would pay more than £300-350. However, it is up to you and the seller. I can't make a firm judgement from a few pictures. Caveat emptor.
-
Looks to me like a Series 4000. It has the composite body. The controls have been altered as the big white switch is not standard Status. Nor was the little switch on these basses.

Great work! The real test for me came with the guitar solo. Passed with flying colours.

I've been looking into this for a while. There is the Providence Dual Bass Station but can't seem to find that available in UK. One other option is two MXR M81 bass preamps. buying two at once is still slightly cheaper than a Bassbone.

Increase the size of the control cavity on a Precision
BassBus replied to Delberthot's topic in Repairs and Technical
Take it to Chris Mcintyre in Edinburgh. Renowned luthier with a high degree of perfection to his work. Might even be able to do the job while you wait. http://www.mcintyreguitars.com -
Start by using chord tones. That can help you focus on specific notes, 1, 3, 5, 7 or b7. Janek Gwizdala is always a good resource for this kind of thing. http://youtu.be/7d5t8t0Y-zU
I hadn't realised you could actually CHANGE the strings on a bass! I gave it a try. Doesn't it sound different?
Well, there you are. I've done you a service in highlighting that you CAN change strings.
-
...to paraphrase someone's song. I recently changed the strings on two basses that had older strings on for a while. I put a slightly lighter set on my ACG Finn which just brought the bass back to life. It has always been a good bass to play but this made such a difference. It now has just the tone I've been looking for. Bonded big time. Then there is the SGC Bass Collection. When the rebuild of that was finished I put on an old set of TI Jazz Flats. The tone was to say the least a little disapointing. But they were TI Jazz Flats, great strings so they stayed on. Then the other day I thought I would just try out a set of Status Hotwires black nylon strings that were lying in a bag. They had been on another bass briefly but I wasn't keen on the tone. Another set of strings that breathed new life into a bass. Loads of tone, bright but still fat enough to give a good tone on fretless. Moral of the story? If you aren't happy with a bass's tone try a different type of string.
...then he started on about how guitars that look different are hard to sell and even said he knows people who have had to change their guitar as the rest of the band didn't like the look of it which really put me off the guy as personally i think that is just crap. Has anyone experienced this problem of "sorry mate, your sh*t hot but that guitar just doesn't look good enough for our band".......
I heard of a guy who had exactly this problem in the 1980s with a Steinberger XL. Just took the mick out of him so he stopped using it. When he changed basses the band started moaning that the new bass didn't sound as good as the Steinberger. That was Bill Wyman and the band was the Rolling Stones.

New Youtube Channel & recent gig vids
BassBus replied to The Jaywalker's topic in EUB and Double Bass
Always fills me with a bit of dread when I see the words "I've just started a new youtube channel". This Is an exception. Great stuff. And a drummer and piano player who listen and take it down when the bass takes a solo. Not every band has that. Great work. -
Rikkers Bodyline Olive-top 5-string (like the one at LBGS 2014!)
Maybe, but you have to have an iPhone first. All three pocket synths together still cost less than an iPhone.
...and I thought I was the only one without an iPhone
-
You can get a synth app for your iPhone for many, many pounds less which will do many, many times more than this will.

Extended range shrot scale bass. They are all the rage this year

Just lovely. Love the neck woods. I'm going across to the Moffat bash but I'm not sure ifnit's a good idea with Alan and his basses there. Want, want, want.
Is it vital to be able to master one finger per fret?
In a word, no! Depends where you are playing on the neck. If you are playing further up towards the body end then it will be easier to play one finger one fret. Playing nearer the nut it will be more difficult, so use the 1,2,4 fingering over three frets. Dave Marks has something to say about it in the clip below. http://youtu.be/eXkxu_7Tn48

Steinberger bass, strings advice and experiences please
BassBus replied to Pinball's topic in Bass Guitars
If your bass has a wooden fingerboard you might be better to try some halfwounds. If you don't mind the fingerboard being chewed up then try some rounds. I don't like too light a string on a fretless. A .40 or .45 G sounds best to me on fretless. More string to give you mwah. -
Steinberger bass, strings advice and experiences please

You should be able to use any double ball end strings. Status Hot Wires are always good. Good price as well and a wide choice of types and gauges. -
I listened to the last program he did on Radio 2. One of the best radio programs I've ever heard. Every track was a cracker and I'm not particularly a funk and soul fan. He played an amazing remix of Marvin Gay's Heard it Through the Grapevine.

Lot of love for Alan's work from a few of us on here. His work is up there with the big names. Celebrating his tenth year as a builder this year and a special Moffat Bass Bash to mark that. http://www.moffatbassbash.co.uk Alan has his own build thread which goes back quite some years showing all the basses he builds at various stages. http://basschat.co.uk/topic/9623-acg-build-progress/ He uses an option of an asimetrcal neck if you want it. On first playing my Finn I thought "I'm not sure about this". After a few minutes I had forgoten all about the neck profile. It is very comfortable to play. The filter preamp is something different too. Great Range of tones. East preamps are offered as well. But then the filter preamp is East built too. The basses well worth a look at.
-
Always fancied one of these. Flats will not bring out the tone. Maybe try a set of halfwounds, you'll get a bit more brightness from them. You could always coat the fingerboard and use rounds then you'd get that lovely bright tone. Here is what the four string can do. http://youtu.be/H7sj15PJ-6Q
