There is no one fretless tone. Same with fretted, you make of it what you want. There are heavy rock fretless players and there are funky fretless players. Pino Paladino has played some pretty funky lines on fretless in the past.
Have a look around on youtube and I'm sure you'll find plenty.
I don't know if it's related to your problem but I had a similar problem with EADGC tuning on a fiver that I suspect was originally BEADG. The E string would not intonate as the screw for that saddle was too short. Once a longer screw was put in the problem was solved. Don't know if that helps.
What's to be guilty about? Some of the best pop music produced in the 70's. Not much to beat Karen Carpenter's voice and Richard's production was just right for it. Missed the program but will search it out on iplayer or watch when it's on next.
I Have restrung fivers a few times with no need for a nut change. As long as the bottom of the nut slots are rounded the new strings should sit in them just fine. You might have to adjust the setup of the neck profile and intonation. You can also buy a four string set and a separate C string to save having a spare B.

How many pairs of shoes does she have?
If you bend a piece of metal backwards and forwards often enough the molecular structure will weaken and it will break. Effectively you are bending the string every time you pluck it and re-tune it. Other than that as above.
['ark a' 'im and 'is molecular structure]

I wanted to post a pic of it here, but I keep receiving an error message that I've exceeded my 30MB limit, despite the file being a lot smaller.

Use Photobucket.

Beautiful example. Looks like you've gone for a slightly wider string spacing than Scott. Is that the case?
No. Same spacing as Mr. Devine, 16.5mm. Very comfortable to play on a fiver. Somehow for me 16.5mm looks a bit odd on a four string so I'm happy with 19mm on a four.
It's like everything to do with playing, practice. Keep trying and you'll get there. I find it works best for me if I hold the very edge of the ebow against my fingers and set it on the neighbouring string. Then rotate it in to the string you want to trigger. Do it gently until you get that tone. This what takes practice.

...to be fair, it's a pretty terrible record.

At best that is a subjective comment. It's a country mile better than Abacab was. (Another subjective comment)
If anyone finds that pot of gold at the end of the rainbow perhaps you could share it out amongst the rest of us. That would cure everyones gas. Wouldn't it?
Just checked pay pal conditions and unfortunately for you custom made items are not covered.

I think this looks horible and I think it sounds horible. Lots of people don't.
