Logic is well thought of and if your son uses it at college it might be a good idea to go with that at home. Means he can take recorded material back and forth on a usb stick, or equivalent. You mention Apple. Do you use an iPad? I use Cubasis on iPad which works really well when IOS8 is sorted anyway. Much cheaper than full DAWs like Logic or Cubase. Cubasis being a much pared down version of Cubase. You will also need an interface which allows you to put audio sound or MIDI (digital notes) into the software via USB cable. That's a start for you. Others will give more advice.

All that Dad said. Playing in a band is a skill like any other. If you haven't done it before it might take you a while to really latch on to it. Like anything else, practice, practice and more practice. It sounds like you are beginning to pick up on things already though. Not every band you try put with will suit you. I usually know within three sessions if I will stick with a band. The jazz band I played with for 13 years I knew within three tunes never mind sessions.

His mistake was trying the guitar. He should have tried the bass. After all it is easier to play and you only play one note at a time.

For me nothing beats the neck profile of my Status S2. Without doubt the quality of the player is what counts but a good setup contributes a great deal to. There aren't too many bad basses around these days.

Ibanez, Cort and ESP LTD are all good makes and come in at good prices. All mostly made in the same factory too. There's a nice Cort B4 on ebay at the moment. Is it a six string you want?

I always practice through an effects processor, Zoom B2.1u. A great tone of your choice. Might be better to get an FX processor with an aux input to give you the option of playing along to your fav. music. I was just talking with my neighbour yesterday about this subject and he never hears me so job done.

The best looking J type basses on the market, IMHO of course. And yours is particularly pretty.

It sounds quite simple to me, it is time for you to move on from your current band. Give them notice but make it a fixed time not 'until they get a replacement'. That focuses their minds to find a replacement. There sometimes comes a time when it is just time to move on.

It's always interesting to read what everyones inspiration was for their piece. I took it as the conversation between Herod and Salome. First part is Herod falling for Salome's beauty and dancing. Second is Salome asking for J the B's head in her somewhat manipulative and psychopathic manner. So that had to be a little disonant. And the final part is Herod realising what he has done. I left the bum notes in as the moment the deed was done. Lowdown got my vote too.
