1.
The whole wood changing thing is nice in theory.... but the second bass the OP uses as an example is a status.... not much wood there
No, there isn't much wood in my Status except the five different pieces that were stuck together to make the body. It' a bolt-on as well so no neck through.
2. If you want an even radius then yes a radius block is essential. You can get them quite cheaply on ebay. If I remember correctly I think I got one from Portugal for a tenner delivered. Get hold of a set of radius gauges too so you can check the exact radius, ebay too.
3. Interesting it happens to more than just wood. My double bass certainly improved with age. Even during any one session. It might start out with an OK tone but within half an hour that tone had improved again, much greater depth to it.
4. I'm sure there is an amount of getting used to it but that doesn't explain my experience with my ACG. That I managed to get a fine tone from within days. That was four years old when I bought it earlier this year. I was once told of a violin maker who, having finished an instrument, placed it on one of his hifi speakers for a few days. He felt that "played" the instrument in. There must be an element of that with solid bodies as well.
5. This is one for those of us lucky enough to buy a custom bass from new. I picked up my Overwater SDS about three months ago now and at the time there was something about the tone that didn't quite settle in with me. Here we are three months on and the tone seems to have matured and fattened up to a tone I am more than happy with. I had exactly the same experience with my Status S2 fretless. Didn't really like the tone in the first few weeks but six years on it is just sublime, perfect. Is this something that happens with a new instrument. Afterall not long ago the Overwater was just a few bits of raw wood. I suppose glue takes time to cure as will finish. Given time those bits of wood all become one. Has anyone else noticed anything like this?
6. This is very fine playing. Love the bass tone. Great stuff.
7. Thanks Dad. First time using a DAW full stop. So much easier than the old Zoom 16 track hard disk. You're almost feeling around in the dark when editing on that. DAWs are so visual, just a breeze.
8. I'll join in this month. Just finished this a couple of days ago. First time using Cubasis so good learning experience. This one is complete with accidentals. That will be when John the Baptist's head was cut off. The Overwater SDS took the lead tune and ACG Finn did the bass line. 9. I don't think us 40 and 50 somethings can be too high and mighty about attitude like this. After all most of us are the parents of these teens and early twenty somethings. So where does that attitude come from? And has that attitude really been any different in that age group throughout time. As BetaFunk says it is present in a lot more than just youngsters.
10. I've just put a video up on Youtube of my fretless. Might give an idea of the tones. Unfortunately it doesn't make me play like Scott Devine. EDIT: video re-rendered as the first one was c*%p quality https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wkmZAfWWBwc
11. If Overwater build it for you you can have anything you want, within reason. They are fantastic basses! Having the pickups in that position just means it doesn't quite have the breadth of tone that others with wider spaced pickups might have. You can't move the neck pickup any closer to the neck as it sits right up against the neck pocket. The bridge pickup could be moved if you want. They are not cheap basses but they are worth every penny. When I ordered mine I spent three hours with Chris and Martin discussing the options. I adore mine and wouldn't be parted from it.
12. Mighty impressive collection. Love the Rob Allens.
13. Lovely. I think Alan's Jazz style basses are the prettiest on the market. I like your choice of bridge pickup placement. Keeps that classic tone but with a bit more body to it.
14. ...or in my case YANBD (yet another new bass day)
15. NAD - new amp day NGD - new guitar day And so on
16.
Somebody please bring me to my senses or I'll have one of them delivered next week.
Don't you remember what your Mother said when you were a kid; "I want never gets". There. Has that brought you to your senses?
17. That serial number would make the bass March 2011.
18.
Bass Collection basses are really good, worth a go!
19. ...or as they say in this country; "absolutely bloody marvelous"!
20.
This could turn into a very silly thread...
Tell that to the posters on Basschat and they wouldn't believe you. Sorry, I couldn't resist.
21. Good man. Fretless is so much easier to play when you get the knack of the intonation. They don't have those pesky little bits of metal in the way on the fingerboard.
