Why do you need so many of the same bass? You can only play one at a time. (says he with ** basses π)

I've had very good results with D'Addario Chromes flats. They have every bit of the brightness of the old Status strings. They do a 40-95 set which might suit you. I used to use the Status strings a lot but wouldn't go back now. https://www.stringsdirect.co.uk/strings-c1/string-sets-c865/bass-guitar-c34/daddario-ecb80-4-string-flatwound-chromes-40-95-long-scale-bass-strings-p1189

Obscure Musical Backwaters - The Great SGC Nanyo Thread
BassBus replied to Happy Jack's topic in Bass Guitars
Recently purchased what appears to be an SB315 from 2000. One of the cheapest basses I've bought but one of the best. A very fine bass indeed. It's had a deep clean, scrubbed the finger board and oiled it, new strings and a setup. Plays beautifully now. Interesting to read an earlier comment that said preamps were not always the best. This is very underpowered so that will probably be up for renewal. Earlier poster said he had a Bartolini in on of his. Fancy that for this. Here's some pics together with my refurbished SB301 which has been shown here before. -

I know people like to criticise lead singers but that's a bit extreme. π Love the tone of the bass.

Congratulations on being played on't wireless. That'll give a bit of an ego boost in your recovery. I've been following your stuff on Bandcamp for some time. I love the sounds you make. Haven't heard anything else like it and highly individual. Keep up the good work.

17 string bass "suitable for beginners"!!!!
BassBus replied to Stub Mandrel's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
I'd love to put that into 'Dave's World of Fun Stuff' for a setup. Just to hear his comments. π -
Just play authentic and there will be no problem.

Just been watching a documentary about the Small Faces on YouTube and was struck by the sound of Ronnie Lane's bass. So full sounding and luscious. Kenny Jones spoke very highly of his ability and how much he enjoyed playing with him. Some fantastic songs too. That is all. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XgzwrSxeh3A

You might not like Jaco's music directly but you will listen to and love some bass players who have been influenced by him. He has that broad an influence.

Brilliant. Tighter than a tight thing and the spirit of 1977 lives π

And I would buy this bass.....why?
BassBus replied to Roger2611's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
Fill it with beer and no need to stop playing to go to the bar. Simples. -

This was a bit of fun to make. Not exactly an original approach and has been done on YT before but I thought I'd have a go at making a piece of music from one single note and a few pitch pedals. The photo video and the walkthrough of how it was made below it.

Really depends on the tone an individual player is looking for. Rounds of any sort are too bright and sparkly for me on a fretless bass, but give me a set of Labella 760s or D'Addario Chromes and they give me just the right amount of brightness that I want. Both those sets also have a fullness of tone I have never heard from a set of rounds. I'd say don't just take someone else's word for it. Experiment with different string types. It might open your eyes or even ears.

I think that was covered earlier. The mass produced fretless basses have finger boards that are mass produced too. Rather than setting up an individual line for unmarked boards it's easier to just put some plastic inserts in some boards for fretless which is always going to be the minority.

Beautiful bass and beautiful playing. Top marks.

As he said.

There's one choice missing in the second vote; "I'm so old I can't remember". π

what piezo bridge for a fretless Precision (+ preamp?)
BassBus replied to mcnach's topic in General Discussion
Tapewound strings wouldn't fit that bridge. -
That is a thing of beauty. I like the look of the neck profile as well. πππ

Thinking of ordering an ACG, bring me up to speed on pickups.
BassBus replied to Chris2112's topic in Bass Guitars
For what you are talking about I'd go to Alan too. He's able to offer a lot more flexibility. I feel the same about the switches on my Finn. Never use them. They offer series/parallel/single coil. I like the fatter tone of the parallel so that's where they stay. If all you want is a fat mid why not think about a Uni Pre preamp. Not the filters of the EQ01 but plenty of sweep in the mid territory and control over set frequencies for treble and bass. IIRC the MC pickups are best paired with the filter preamp, as Wal do with theirs. The MC pickups are individual pickups per string. -
Amazing what you can do with cut and paste these days. However it was made it works really well. π
