1. A quality instrument will always help your playing more than cheaper ones. I remember a story of a young musician many years ago who entered a very prestigious music competition. He was very much able to win this competition, without being arrogant about it. He was quite surprised to find that he didn't win despite putting in a very good performance. The Judges called him aside after the end. They informed him that they were well aware he had the capability to win but his instrument let him down. As a special award they gave him £2000 towards the cost of a new instrument. That was in the 80s. The same again would have been added to that for the purchase. That person has had a very successful career as a musician ever since. I'll let you take from that what you will.
2. Relax! If I were you I would just keep using your charts at practices all the time. When it comes to gigs you'll know the stuff. Just relax and don't worry about it. The more you fret the more you'll tense up and forget things. Jazz players often use charts during performances, even John Patitucci and you don't get much better than him.
3. ...and some pics of your own bass to show the condition.

5. Interesting stuff indeed, but how did that machine get to the point that it could play that line? If indeed it did play that line. People had to design that machine. People had to build it. People had to program it. I don't think we are in a lot of danger. Once upon a time someone said we would be a cashless society. Someone said we would not need paper. Someone said CB radio was the future. Maybe I'm just one of these real idiots though.
6. If you have a synth pickup on a bass I'd imagine you could use a Minitaur with a bass. You'd need a midi interface as well most likely.
7. Sounds great James. The bass is mixed beautifully. I was just playing a bit of Gypsy Jazz at a gig last night. Keep up the good work.
8. PMed. I know there have been some problems with others uploading photos onto the site after the hacking last week. Best try a photo hosting site and work from there.

10. £8481.63 for a bass that makes no sound. They forgot to put any controls on it. Yeehaaa! 11.
Am I allowed to comment on the poor singing technique of the young girl in the white top (Ellie Goulding)
I'm told she's quite popular with young people. LG's closing set on the Friday show was great. Very infectious. He got da funk.
12. I don't know. Fender's QC just ain't up to much these days.
13.
Also, Firth Of Fifth was a leftover from Foxtrot. Imagine having a song that good as a leftover.
Well if you have a 'song' like Supper's Ready taking up the whole of one side and Watcher... on the other there was never going to be enough room for Firth of Fifth as well.
14.
When I was a child I remember Sixth Form types walking down the road where we lived in Afgan coats , flared trousers and embroidered denim jackets with Geneseis albums tucked under their arms , probably on their way round their friends house to listen to Foxtrot or Selling England ByThe Pound on a music centre ( remember them? ) while drinking cider and smoking roll ups in bedroom smelling of of joss sticks with Led Zeppelin posters on the wall . I bet kids nowadays couldn't make their own entertainment with the same meagre resources - it's all legal highs , ipods and dubstep. They don't have the neccesary attention span to listen to a concept album and will never know the joy of spending an evening arguing with their mates over whether Geddy Lee is a better bass player than Chris Squire . Maybe we could rehabilitate young offenders by making them listen to Tales From Topographic Oceans all the way through . That would teach em!
It's a terrible thing the generation gap, isn't it. Us oldies just don't know we're living. And Seconds out was the best, even if most of it was rerecorded in the studio.
15. Could I just add for newer users of Photobucket that if you put your cursor over the direct link for the photo and RIGHT click that will automatically copy the link. That can then be entered as in Step 3.
16. Bass on the Boradband - Internet radio playing bass heavy music. Lots of fusiony music of all sorts. http://www.bassonthebroadband.com/
17. But unfortunately the stuff that is pedaled on these shows is the stuff that sells most. The 'good' stuff just doesn't sell in large quantities anymore. Even Brian May has had to admit that, and I'm sure you'll include his music as 'magical'. the music business works much more towards live concerts these days. X-Factor winners might do one, maybe two arena tours then that's it. How many people will go to the upcoming Stones tour. But at the same time how many people will buy their new CD. Not nearly as many as would have in the 70s. There is 'magical' stuff out there but it doesn't get played on the radio that much and I guess that's your point.
18.
.... and are still doing.
Exactly. The death still goes on to this day in the name of freedom. I like to go along to our village War Memorial for the short service each year. It always annoy's me that those in their cars do not give a little respect and stop for that five or ten minutes. No, they don't have time for that. They have to get to wherever they are going. To enjoy themselves, to do what they want to do. There are many hundreds and thousands who cannot do that. Rant over.
19. I suppose this is similar to the cheap fiver thread on the go. Don't know anything about these basses but you will get what you pay for. BGM did a review of the Shine 6 string recently and quite liked it with the caveat of you get what you pay for. Just beware that the tone of the low B might not always be that great.
20. ...and I think that is always going to be the stumbling block, the quality of tone from the low B. I'm sure you might find one or two good low Bs on cheaper fivers but that might be down to luck more than anything else.
21. Sorry, I should have posted that this has gone. Thanks for the interest.
22. If you want the five string option why not buy an octave pedal. Turn off the natural signal and turn the octave signal on full. Then play all your notes above the 7th fret. Instant five string. Scott Devine uses that trick and he knows what he's doing.
23. I'm sure it could be done. You would have to buy a new neck as I'm sure you wouldn't be able to fit five strings on a 4 Jazz neck. Buy a new bridge and new pickups and have the routings altered for the pickups. I would just persevere with selling and buy a fiver.
