1. Rule number two under "Guidelines for Sellers" http://basschat.co.u...tion=rules&f=19 Would a car sales centre try and sell cars with only a written description?
2.
Have you not seen this.......? (at 3.55, he is singing a third higher Monster player)
That might leave some people cold but you have to admire the playing. He has a great voice too.
3. BassBus

New Zoom B3

Doesn't look like it unfortunately.
4. I'd keep the action as high as you can. It will help keep the volume as high as possible. There is more room for the string to vibrate. Think how high the strings are off the body of a double bass. If it is too high at the nut then that can be lowered by a luthier if you don't know what you are doing with nuts.
5. There would be a lot more interest if you posted pics here so we can see what your bass looks like.
6. I'd say it was an East J-Retro pre amp. Two switches and no LED. Different knobs too.
7. ...and what's the problem with that? The originals are put together by one group of players. Why then, can another group of people not interpret it their own way? That's what happens in jazz all the time. John Entwistle talked about the fans who picked up on him playing one note out of place on the My Generation solo. He recorded it as an improvised solo but because it was on record in some people's minds it has to be played the same all the time. Why not vary things? Most pop and rock stuff will have come from improvisation anyway. Keep it flexible. Much more fun.
8.
Bit of Trev on double bass with the AoN gang: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i4THY1v3a5k
And there was me thinking "what the b#$$£% hell is Paul Morley doing up there"? But then I remembered...
9. It's Papa Lazaroo Oh, the bass? That looks like a Westone of some sort.
10. Might be a bit late to the party here but Status Hot Wires do black nylon/tapewound strings 40-100and 45-105. Having said that just ordered a set of La Bella tapewounds from Stringbusters. Always had good dealings with them and superfast delivery.
11. Twat!!! Well he must have been. That sounds like fun music and good bass playing. Nice story too.
12. Interesting comment about the cheaper basses. I had thought that raising the action would help. That's part of the reason a DB has a higher volume. All the clips I've looked at on YouTube are being played solo so doesn't give an idea of ensemble playing. The best sounding one was strung with black nylon strings. Ehm, no, I don't have $2200 to spare. More's the pitty as it looks like an interesting instrument.
13.
Fair point and I agree it can happen. However, in a crowded bar, difficult acoustic or amongst certain instruments (which is why I mentioned congas) even the biggest sounding DB can get lost. Yes, I've played gigs unplugged where people at the back - including famously the sound guy who had managed to mess up our mix so badly through the PA that we gave up and went acoustic/backline - have said that the DB really cuts through and projects, but this is not something I can predict in advance of each individual gig, and I therefore can't rely on this happening. I can (generally) rely on my amp in any setting
I must admit there have been a couple of occasions when one guy turns up with his cajon. That has such a deep, warm tone that it cancels out the DB completely if we hit our instruments at the same time.
14.
How about because it's five/six times the size? And even DB struggles against more than one instrument, especially guitars with nice bright sounding strings! Add even calmly played congas to the mix and you're pretty much gone....
I don't think I would agree with that. Our session has fiddles and banjos and flutes and whistles and guitars and accordions and the DB comes through very well. I'm told it can be heard in the bar across the hallway quite clearly. Maybe that's why I get all achy when I'm playing it.
15. That's what I was afraid of. If I turned up to the session with an amp I'd be chucked out and never allowed back.
16. I play DB at a local acoustic folk session but I would like to try an acoustic bass and see how that went. Do any of you play an acoustic bass acoustically with lots of other instruments around? How does it come through the collective noise? I'm talking purely acoustically with no amps present at all.
17. Considering the price of a new Fylde acoustic bass, that is a give away.
18. I think topo morto makes a fair point. Methinks OP doth protesteth too much???
19.
Jon Letts custom 4 string.
Lovely bass Jay. I love the shape of these things. Nice simple design that works well.
20. Ed Poole has a new album out that sounds rather good http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LUskWwmXG4w
21. Why not consider one of the John East MM preamps. No soldering needed. Just take the wires from the pickup and put them in the screw terminals. http://www.east-uk.com/
22. Well that was worth waiting for pics of. Enjoy playing it.
23. Great for more than just double bass. They will handle an electric bass just as well. I've been using a Contra for many years.
