1. Big Holdsworth fan too. My first taste of this stuff was in 1979. McCormack's Music (RIP) hosted a Fender roadshow. The band included Felix Krish on bass and Allan Murphy on guitar. Still remember it to this day and that sound has stuck with me.
2. I like the sound of the Ranjit Barot stuff. Good cross of rock, jazz and Indian flavours. Keep them coming.
3. As an addendum to Bilbo's thread GOD.....I LOVE JAZZ. Not every jazz fan is going to be a fusion fan so maybe it needs its own thread. You decide. I know there are a few fans of the genre on here so what are your fave tracks/bands. I'm on a big Gary Willis kick at the moment so here's a Tribal Tech 'tune' to start off. 4.
Just an opinion, but I think a ramp is a bit of a pointless gimmick. Your technique should be good enough to make a ramp superfluous, and you should be able to play hard or soft without hooking your fingers under the strings anyway.
Quite frankly it's this kind of attitude that holds up a player's development. When it comes to technique there are no shoulds or shouldn'ts. Did Jaco Pastorius and Stanley Clarke stay playing root notes because that's what a bass should do. No! They thought outside the box and moved bass playing on by miles in a very short time. I don't think anyone can argue that Gary Willis and Matt Garrison are among the finest bass players of the moment. Both use ramps. That is what they choose to use as it suits their playing style. Not everyone needs or wants a ramp. They will always be used by only a minority. Don't get stuck in dogma. That just holds up development.
5. As far as I know Gary Willis was one of the first to use a ramp (I'm sure someone will correct me on that one). They do stop you getting your fingers too far under the string if you use the four finger picking technique. Have a look at Gary Willis' playing on youtube. There are one or two clips of him explaining his use of the ramp. I've just started working with four finger picking and the ramp is pretty well integral in that style, as the end of the neck is integral in slapping. If you are someone who likes to dig in on your playing then it is not for you. I like a more subtle approach to that so I'm thinking of having one bass fitted with one.
6. Marcin bought a P pickup from me. Great to deal with and no problems whatsoever. Thanks Marcin.
7.
He did? I thought it was thumb and index finger.
Of course it was...with a pick in between them
8. That's it! the world has come to an end. Mark King using a plectrum
9. Just noticed, no price and no pics. Tut.
10. And when one of those "out of funds" posts is added to your thread what happens? Your thread goes back to the top of the list (and Luke beat me to it). Free bump that might be within the 36 hour rule. Don't put them down, people are looking at your sale thread.
11. Just amazing looking basses. One string too many for me unfortunately but good luck with the sale.
12. I would love to hear some sound samples of the Expression. Never seen a fretless before. Just beautiful!
13.
Not sure if this album has been mentioned here yet - but - the new Tribal Tech album 'X' is a cracker - bit cheesy fusion in places but Gary Willis is on fearsome form throughout - and the tunes are pretty darn good too - not going to be everyone's bag I know but if you like their other stuff you'll love this: http://www.reverbnat...rsontribaltechx Cheers Mike
I'm not a huge fan of Scott Henderson's playing but I can't get enough of GW's playing at the moment. His No Sweat album has hardly been of the player for a while.
14. Which preamps are they? There are a number of different varieties on the ACG site. That's where pics would be useful.
15. Not used for a very, very long time but still in full working order. You'll see the tare on the speaker cone in the photo but that doesn't affect the sound, or doesn't seem to to my ears. Covering pealing a bit on the back. Yours to take away for the cost of picking it up from Berwick upon Tweed.
16.
The "girl" who clearly gets it is a professional singer.
...and she and her husband just happen to be two of the leading vocal coaches in the country. Or is it just an illusion? 17. I would agree with this. It is common for thicker strings to taper but it should be past the nut. Are they medium or long scale strings? Also, check how you have wound them onto the tuner. Start the winding from the top of the post and work it down. This will give a greater bend at the nut and hold the string down onto the nut better.
18. Eeyoo! I'd say the bridge is out of line. Something's not right.
19. Wonderful bass sound as well. http://www.producersmusic.co.uk/
20. This is as good a place to sell as anywhere. Have a look at 'For sale: Basses' in the Marketplace. Read through the pinned topics there and you'll get all the advice you'll need. Look through the instruments up for sale and do some research on ebay to find what prices similar instruments a going for. Be realistic with your pricing as it is a buyers market for obvious reasons at the moment. When you post don't forget to post photos from the outset and give lots of details about your bass. Best of luck with the sale and the new arrival.
21.
So, I don't think tribute acts are necessarily degrading, cringeworthy or embarrassing... ... but the fact remains, sometimes they are. Exhibit A:
Well, he does do a very good job of sounding like Michael Jackson
22. It's always a good idea to have a new bass set up professionally after you buy it. Factory settings are always a compromise because we all want something different. String gauge, action height, you name it. You could tweak the trus rod a bit which might help. Plenty of videos on youtube telling you how to do that. But I would have it professionally set up.
