Yes..it is beginning to nag at me... I don't want to leave, or have to start again, but I feel this is the start of a slippery slope and its a question of how I try and bury that feeling...or will I be able I do know I know the right people and think I can get the players together ...but with new people comes new 'baggage'
Burying feelings will never work. I see this again and again with my counselling clients. That's why people come to see me. They have buried feelings. But they have never gone away and end up becoming stuck in life. How is burying your feelings going to help your playing with this band? You don't want to leave but you have other musicians who you can play with. You are concerned about where your current band is going in your mind. Then you are concerned about new "baggage" with new musicians. You see a slippery slope with the current band. I get the feeling your mind is going one way.

You have your right to put your view forward, goes without saying. But at the end of the day what the whole band decides is more important. In our band, whenever any one member has tried to push the band in a direction they would like it to go they have always come off worst. Usually by leaving or being chucked out. Our band has always been bigger than any one member. At the end of the day if the band is to survive everything has to be a collective decision. Sometimes your views will be accepted, sometimes not. Others might come here and say I'm talking tripe. I'll just have to accept that. That is what makes this such a useful forum.

Haven't listened to them for a long time. This might just make me dig out the LPs again. I think it was 1979 or 80 I saw them at Glasgow Apollo. Andy Ward played just about the best drum solo I have ever heard. Great band.

Shipping Guitar in hard case to Normandy: best method..?
BassBus replied to Dad3353's topic in General Discussion
If you provide weight and dimensions from your own scales allow a little extra when getting a quote. I sent a bass to Germany last year. I dropped it into the UPS depot in Edinburgh where it was examined and weight and dimensions taken. To my surprise I received an invoice to cover the cost of extra weight. It was soon cleared up when they were told they had weighed it in their depot. Just to be aware of though if you are having it picked up by a courier. -
This might help with choosing new DB strings. http://www.hervejeanne.de/saitenmatrix.php

...and when I go back to school tomorrow I'm going to learn to read.

Certainly it's a lot less than my Shadow cost me. But how can you rate something as good value that hasn't arrived for three months. Be interesting to see how this turns out.
No, but more than flats.
I would argue with this, strongly. Halfwounds sing like nothing else on my basses. I don't get the rounds on fretless thing. They are rough to the touch with lots of finger noise and, as experienced, damage the fingerboard. Halfwounds are smooth to the touch with much less finger noise and loads of mwah. It all depends on the setup and the way you play the bass. If you dig in you'll loose all the voicing and it ends up just sounding like a fretted bass with dull strings. Play more gently and the sound swells after you pluck the note. Add into that some easy side to side rolling of the left hand finger and you get the most beautiful vibrato. Pulling the string across the fingerboard looses all that sensitivity. Try halfwounds before you go any further. Get them from the Status Graphite site. Just about the best value strings out there.

End of thread.
@ the end then , is each his own isn t it
Yes it is...
I don't really get why people worry about it all. If it doesn't work for you, move on.
...and yes I have.

I didn't start this thread to bash Rics but I think I'm now beginning to see what it is people like about them. They are starting to sound like quite a personalized bass. You need to add in your own touches like choice of string, amp and speaker. It's maybe that business of overpowering the speaker that gives it a good sound. Maybe it's the Fenders, Musicmans, and Warwicks of this world that need a bashing. Personally I don't get why everyone loves Fenders so much. I had a bass setup recently and the luthier wasn't half giving Fenders a bashing. Is it not better that a bass can be what you what it to be instead of just giving you what the designer/builder wants you to have?

Now, now, boys and girls. Don't forget to take a Gramma for protection. Keep the neighbours happy.
Hur hur huuuuurrrrr Silliness apart that is a beautiful bass................. stunning !!! Are you ashamed of our love ?
Not at all. All for free love. It'll just be more comfortable for you all now that bluejay is joining in.

Maybe we have all become used to picking up certain basses and just getting that tone that they produce. Be it a Wal, Jazz or whatever. Sounds like Rics need a bit of coaxing with the right gear and if you are willing to put that time in you will get a tone to love. I've read about varying quality before in the brand. I suppose if you want that look and sound and you're willing to put the effort in then go for it. Think I'll be lazy and just stick with the tone I love from my Status basses.

My PC goes through some decent monitors. A search for 4001 produced one or two better sounding instruments. But they did have the gain cranked a bit. Still some others sound no better than a F*****. May be it's just a case of the hands that are playing them. As I said the big name players do get great sounds from them.

I know I'm going to get a bashing for this but here goes. I've been listening to a few clips of Ric 4003s being played on youtube recently and I must say I am very disappointed with the sound. They sound so bland. You might say "how uninformed". Well not really. I was and am a huge fan of early to mid period Rush when Geddy played the Ric. I love Chris Squires playing and sound and still love Mike Rutherford's playing on early Genesis songs with his Ric. They all sounded great but those clips on youtube make them sound so ordinary. Is the sound all down to processing with effects and EQ or is it just me (or the clips)?

I went through a period of loving John Pattituci's music in the Nineties and bought a six string about ten years ago. As has been commented on the neck is WIIIDDDEEE. The one thing I really did not like was the sound of the low B string. I still don't when I hear one played. Sold that bass last year and am focused on 4 strings now. Never needed a fifth. If I went that way it would be tuned E-C.

5 String Status Electro ***Mega Price Drop!!***
BassBus replied to andyonbass's topic in Basses For Sale
Status Electros are just amazing as fretless basses. I have an Electro 2. When it has halfwounds on it it sings like nothing else. Flats on it give a lovely thumpy sound. Doubt Rob Green would be able to make a new wooden neck as he doesn't make wooden necks any longer. That would have to be done by a luthier. Again much money. I thibnk a defret would bring this alive. -

I remember seeing one on Talkbass years ago. It looked like what it is. Bet it sounded a lot better than a P bass though.
