These wooden necked Status basses have to be some of the most value for money basses out there. Looks like a great job.

Hi Jim, I'm up the road in Berwick. Scroll down the home page till you find the 'Basschat Market Place' section. Click on 'For Sale: Basses'. Simply start a new thread from there. Give the price you are looking for plus any postage cost. If you want payment by paypal then state that and who will pay the fees. Always post photos when you start the thread. Put in any other relevant info as well. You'll see a button at the top of your new thread asking for a donation. You might want to think about giving a donation to Basschat if you sell the bass through here. It's that simple. Sorry I'm not in the market for a new bass right now.

The worst bit I had to deal with in my early days playing jazz, was the cold sweat that went through me when the band leader gave me the nod to say "you're next".
Just going by personal experience. My first fretless was set as you say and caused me grief. I put a little more relief into it and it plays sweet as anything.
As always this comes down to personal taste as well, which always has to be factored in.
-
Pretty much the same. You will need to give the neck some extra relief but otherwise it's the same. (IMHO)
I wouldn't agree with this. Any significant relief will cause the string to 'choke' at points on the neck.
-
I should say so. You want to have the neck as straight as you can get it. That helps with the 'mwah'. The nut also needs to be cut very low. The action wants to be about 0.5 or 0.6mm at the first 'fret'. Any higher and it's going to be hard to play a note at that end of the neck. The instrument can be intonated in much the same way as a fretted. The way I was shown was to take an allen key and toch the string over the 12th 'fret'. Play the harmonic through a tuner and tune the string there. Then fret it with the allen key. Adjust the saddle back and forth acordingly. That should give you give you a good playing action.

How about this? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wWLOxRSll5Q&feature=g-vrec&context=G2365a59RVAAAAAAAACA Through some effects it might give you what you want.

From what you say in your post you are already starting to develop a soloing style. If you can vary and adapt then keep working on that. Each time you play over a chord progression try something a little different. The earliest jazz soloists simply varied the tune as a solo. It takes time but the more you practice the more you'll start to get it. Scott Devine has a lot of good videos. Looking forward to his Gary Willis tutorials.
u mean i need another 18 inch speaker....sweet!!! my guitarests would love that they already complain bout my sonic boom!!
No. It's not about the size of the speaker. It's about ohms. The ohms are the pipe not the speaker. Find out the ohm rating of the speaker and you might be getting somewhere. Sounds like you might be putting too many ohms into your speaker. Why not try someone else's 8 ohm amp through your speaker and see what happens.
-
Yeh, what ohm rating does the speaker have and what ohm rating on the amp. You can't fit a pint in a half pint pot and all that. The best description of ohm's law I read talked of it as two hose pipes. If you are trying to squeeze water through a 1cm pipe it can only flow as quickly as that pipe can take it. If you then attach another 1cm pipe along side it you have twice the flow rate. Therefore, an amp that is rated 500w at 8 ohms can only push about 300w of power through to an 8 ohm speaker. If you connect a second 8 ohm speaker you reduce the resistance to 4 ohms and are able to use the full 500w. Is your amp around 4 ohms? And is it trying to go into an 8 ohm speaker?

Whatever you do, Clarky, don't give up the DB. When I started playing one the trumpet player in our band said I'd never be out of musical work with a DB. At the time I thought "yeh, right". But it has turned out to be the case. As the others have said take a bit of time out. People now know of your playing. Word gets around.

I'd agree with charic. Have a look at the for sale section. The guys on here are pretty honest, in my experience anyway. If you buy used they should hold their value quite well so if a bass doesn't suit you you can always sell it on again for much the same price. I've bought some really good gear on here for very good prices. My Markbass 121p combo was as new, sold to me at nearly half the new price.
-
What price range are you looking at? Where are you based? That would help narrow the choice down a bit.

Silly question, how do you play the E string??
BassBus replied to BassInMyFace's topic in EUB and Double Bass
Rufus Reid recommends pretty much what has been said already. Thumb on the side of the fingerboard, pluck string with the side of the first finger and rotate the hand. He also recommends using the whole arm when plucking strings as he feels it gives a fuller sound. Also means you are spreading the weight through more than just your hand which means less chance of strains. -
Jonathon Cainer explains learning the double bass
BassBus replied to sarah thomas's topic in EUB and Double Bass
I'm always saying this to my clients. The ultimate goal is to be a proficient DB player but that is such a big step it seems impossible. How can you break it down into small goals that will eventually lead to the ultimate goal? It's identifying those small steps that's more important than the end game. This could get a bit philosophical. -
To get back on topic, there is a beautiful S2 just been shown on Statii.com http://www.statii.com/forum/forum/viewthread.php?thread_id=4730&pid=45129#post_45129

I have no woodworking skills at all. What could possibly go wrong?

Found this on the net, might be of some use. http://www.engineeringtoolbox.com/wood-density-d_40.html Might also be worth your while looking into the tonal properties of different woods. I'm sure your luthier friend can help you there. http://www.koolauukulele.com/woods.html -
Perhaps they sounded on what is only one video. I'd hardly say GB sound "crap" though. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l22dtkq8srE
With that pastie complection he definitly doesn't see the outside very often.
Maybe that's why he thinks slapping is still cool.

This looks rather tasty, if you like headless basses that is. I'm a long time fan of Ned Steinberger's designs so this would be a worthy addition. Better start saving now. Might take a while. Not trying to be cheaky, honest. It just sounds as if there is a bit of a buzz on bits of the neck. Lovely sound. It'll be the SansAmp that gives it that acousticy tone. Keep up the good work.

If you're new to jazz you're catching on well. Good effort. You can't go wrong with Autumn leaves. Probably one of the most recorded jazz tunes. What bass are you using? Piezo pickup? Have you had it setup recently?

I'd expect an amp in there at that price
