It's always interesting to hear how different people find an interpretation. That is one of my favourite orchestral pieces but I found it just sounded like mud. For me it needs the violins up top. Just my view though. Interesting take on it though. Really well played.

I use the Shadow SH950 on my acoustic upright and it gives a very true representation of the acoustic sound. I've also used the Realist (which packed in too quickly) and the Fishman BP100 (not the best of sounds and certainly not good for bowing). The Shadow is very easy to fit as it just slots in between the wings of the bridge. I had to slip in some veneers of wood to give a tight enough fit but that was no problem.

I've tried my guitar through my Markbass and Acoustic Image amps. Even with the bass turned off completely it was still a bit bassy for me. It worked perfectly well though. Mind you I'm playing jazzier/folkier stuff so don't need huge amounts of distortion or other effects. I wouldn't bother with these tiny starter amps. From the little experience I've had with them they are awful.

[/quote] This is a terrible idea. When you start playing political manipulation you'll not only loose a drummer but a friend as well. Manipulation is never a good idea and is usually only used by bullies. As a lot of posters have said just be upfront about it. When you work with people there will, from time to time, be those who do not pull their weight. Something has to be done about it. So basically, put up or shut up and accept the situation. The choice is yours.

You say this happens when plugged into the mains. Does this happen when you're using battery power?

There was a thread a wee while ago from a guy who was thinking of buying an unlined fretless electric. He was afraid of playing without lines to guide him. I think it is the fear that can hold us back. If you just dive in and give it a go you'll either sink or swim. As you play fretless electric already you're more likely to swim. Just go for it.

I think in the 70s that would have been a Telecaster bass. By that time the P bass we know today was well established and the Telecaster bass would have been a way to satisfy those who wanted the original design of the Precision.

I had a go at the pivoting method last night and, for me, found it much easier to find the notes moving up the neck. I'd be interested to hear other's comments on Clarky's query as well.

Regarding the raising/lowering of the elbow. I think raising the elbow puts a lot of strain on the shoulder, certainly does with mine. The important thing is to make sure your wrist is as straight as possible. This avoids injury from too much tension in tendons and muscles. Watch some clips of good players and see how they do it. Like the Simadl/Rabbath approaches, try a number of different angles and find what suits you. We are all built differently so it's up to you to find what suits you. A good teacher will work with you in this way. A teacher who is dogmatic about 'the' way to do it is perhaps not the best teacher, not just in bass playing but anything in life. Always try as many different approaches as you can find and go with the one that feels best for you.
