Help an experienced guitarist choose his first bass guitar + amp!
BassBus replied to bisonkills's topic in Bass Guitars
...and keep an eye on the for sale section here. I picked up a Markbass 1x12 combo for £500. Lots of good basses around too and as the market is a bit suppressed at the moment you might get something for a good price. If you're playing the rock stuff you talk about and only use the passive mode, then you won't go wrong with a Fender. You are comfortable with the Jazz so why not stick with that to start with. Usually quite a few around. -
I really do not like Moondance and Sunny and I laugh when people think they are jazz tunes. However, here's one of the best jazz tunes ever written, Duke Ellington's Satin Doll. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DQLtNSPC7P0

This site might also be of some help. http://www.stringmail.co.uk/stringinfo.htm

Had a drive down to Whitely Bay today to buy Dave's JV-1080. Flawless transaction and a great bloke. Fine collection of basses too. Thanks Dave, I'll have loads of fun with this. Graham
I think it was those Status flats that were recomended to me by Steve_Soar. Are they any good? I dont recal seeing them anywhere.
They certainly are very good. I use them on my Status S2 fretless. The way I EQ the bass produces this lovely big fat, warm tone. One drummer I've played with commented that the bass was the most upright sounding electric he's heard. That says enough for me.

...and they're appearing in Glasgow on January 19.

Like anything it's always worth experimenting. You're right to ask if unsure but without trying things that are new to us we'll never move on. Give them a go.

Turns out we're all wrong. It's rosewood. http://www.statii.com/forum/forum/viewthread.php?thread_id=4628&pid=44155#post_44094
But, there is a practical reason for not tuning in fifths: your hands probably aren't big enough!
This had crossed my mind. I used to play a full length scale bouzouki but playing tunes was difficult as I have relitively small hands. Bought a shorter scale Fylde Octavius and it is much easier. Still worth a try though.

You can buy custom sets of strings on the Status Graphite site. http://www.status-graphite.com/status/frames/index_home.html Goto online shop -bass strings - single ball - long scale - then select one of the custom set pages. Might need some nut alteration for thicker strings.

I'm no expert on the woods Rob uses, or used, but it might be Cocobolo. That wood seems to vary quite a bit. Some is quite dark, some lighter. Some very red others not so. Still a lovely bass.

On the subject of reviews. It has been a criticism of BGM in the past that basses reviewed are too often in the higher price bracket. I have posted my feelings on this in the past. We all have the ability to go along to our local instrument store and look at endless Ibanez, Fender and Yamaha basses in the low to medium price bracket. Therefore, I think concentrating on that price of bass is perhaps not the best use of editorial space. Highlighting lesser known basses for me would be more use. But then again that is only my opinion.
Seems like a popularity contest to me... and I doubt that will be what it is intended for and will be discredited. I have seen forums split the camp like this before and then the whole thing that made it a general community ended up as a very small active content.. You might still attract new members so you can appeal to advertisers .................................... You'll get self serving cliques or groups and a herd mentality which might even hunt in packs to promote their own end or products. This needn't be premeditated but that wont stop it. .........which will promote a backlash from a few who then will go off and find another forum and you'll lose good members and be left with a jolly little club... It will be no good thinking...this forum is different because of the people who are here..they all think that. The single most valuable resource here is people and their opnions/experience...diverse as they may be, as that encourages new members. If you lose that..you could become a club and end up like the MM forum
I'm not sure I understand where this has come from. How long has the Like/Dislike system been here? Against How long has Basschat existed without the Like/Dislike system. I just urge anyone who hasn't voted to read all sides of the discussion, make their own mind up and actually vote. Whatever the result I will be staying here and accept the majority outcome.
Ooh, negged again for speaking my mind! Y'know, I'll be quite glad when this system is gone!
That's a big +1 on that, good buddy.
I'm shocked only 160 people have voted out of nearly 19,000 members.
It might also be an indication of the way society has gone when it comes to voting. Unions having a "mandate" to call a strike even when only one third of those eligable to vote have voted. One referendum I know of, claiming half the population were in favour of a wind farm when only 3% of those eligable to vote had done so. Nearly 40% of the voting population don't vote in general elections. We make the democracy we end up with. Or not.
...what an awesome piece of kit glad you like it:-D
Not half as much as I'm sure you will. Don't forget to post it on Statii too. You know how jelous moo gets.

That's what I call a great way to debut yourself on the forum. The S2 is lovely.

Nymans is a very common rosin but Pops Bass Rosin is a bit more sticky than Nymans. Pots of either aren't that expensive so you could try both and see what suits you best.
What about a not fussed option?
Why don't you just be fussed and have an opinion, hmm.

Just think, if the world hadn't changed through history we wouldn't even have anything to complain about. We wouldn't even have Basschat. I think the new site is very usable. Takes a bit of time to get used to anything new but I like everything about it. Keep up all the good work Ped and team. I'll join those who really appreciate it.
