  1. To be fair (let's be fair - it allows a retention of the high ground) - it looks like there's a slot for a zero fret, so the nut slots would be deeper and the nut's job is purely and simply as a string guide.
  2. Thanks for the clarification. Yes, if you're paying for some of it then it's time to bow out. It's been a good run though. Mrs. Neepheid is a star, but she does not know that much about basses - she took me round the guitar shops, and when I found something I liked she said well, I'm getting you this. She knew I was "aff it" - I thought I was just going round having a look for the sake of having a look!
  3. This was bought for you as a gift? Unsolicited (as in not a case of "go and buy this for me so I can get around the rules")? That's your get out clause then. During my successful year, Mrs. Neepheid bought me a bass (a Reverend too, from the same shop, oddly enough) as a spur of the moment, unsolicited gift.
  4. No, you can't have it both ways - the deposit argument is to allow for arrivals in the following year. It goes from when the order is placed. I have something on back order, slated to arrive at the end of January next year. Because I have paid for it this year, that would goose me for this year (if I hadn't already KOed myself anyway back in May), but I will not be disqualified next year when it arrives.
  5. Many of my 10 basses are stock and sound great: Epiphone Jack Casady G&L L-1000 G&L Tribute LB-100 Yamaha BB1200 Sire D5 Sire Z7 Does that make them all magic?
  6. Wow, exactly 20 days, finally they have acknowledged that they have received the return. I wonder if they'll pay the "invoice" I sent them, or just ignore it...
  7. I'm not a knob twiddler at the gig - I modify things at the pedal board - EQ, OD, synth, pitch shifting. That's "dramatic" changes to me. The knobs on the bass don't really make that much difference in the grand scheme of things as far as I'm concerned - I'm set and forget, as long as I've got some mids to play with, I'm a happy boy. I buy basses because they're pretty and match certain specifications, some of which are negotiable. But whether they're active or passive means very little to me. I only have one active bass right now, that's a Sire Z7, and I bought it because I liked the looks of it. That's just the way the cookie has crumbled right now, have owned many active basses in the past. I do think that every active bass (with passive pickups) should come with a passive "get out of jail free" mechanism, even if it's raw pickup output. I know it is our responsiblity as players to keep on top of batteries, but to err is human, and it's far better to be able to limp to the end of a song with the flick of a switch rather than just go silent IMO.
  8. Oh, the price is locked in for me too, I'm saying that the door is closed now for new orders.
  9. Umm, just as well I'm not in a hurry for mine! "New estimated delivery date: December 27, 2024 - December 30, 2024" Can you no find any D'addario XLs before then? People must have overdone it a bit - price is back up to about normal now.
  10. I've gone for the Entwistle Neodymium job. Before they put their prices up too! Thanks to everyone who contributed to https://www.basschat.co.uk/topic/235314-entwistle-bass-pickups Tonerider is probably still a great pickup too, but a 40% price hike in one go is a bit harsh, left a sour taste.
  11. 40% increase overnight? That's them out of the running then!
  12. Thanks mate, already a member, but it's the thought that counts!
  13. That's fantastic, my home strings at a fantastic price - that's me stocked up! Thanks for the heads up!
  14. I suspect this thread may be short (Tonerider or Warman, EOT) but I thought I'd ask anyway in case anyone had any other bright ideas. I'm putting a project together with an aggressively low budget and I'm looking for a great sounding but inexpensive pickup. My current thoughts turn towards the Tonerider Duke (a mildly overwound 12k Alnico 5 job - https://tonerider.com/products/the-duke), but I'm happy to listen to any other ideas you might have! Over to you...
  15. I have used both the Hercules and K&M on awkward shaped basses (Gibson RD/Explorer/T-bird). They're both good but the K&M is telescopic and packs down a lot smaller than the Hercules without having to dismantle it. However, the Hercules grabby mechanism is superior IMO. Also the Hercules is a bit heavier than the K&M, so it's less likely to be knocked over which sometimes happens to me with the K&M during an unclean dismount of the bass. I don't play Jazz basses, but if you want a compact stand, the Rotosound RGS-200 works with a Jaguar, which is offset. Just needs to sit it a little to the left in the stand. Observe the difference compared to a Sire D5 (which is not offset).
  16. Some of the limited edition have leaked across the pond! Purple sparkle is already gone, but they've still got blue... https://www.musicstore.com/en_GB/GBP/Epiphone-Thunderbird-64-Brunswick-Blue-Sparkle/art-BAS0012594-001
  17. How was my gig last night? Cancelled, that's what. Singer got the lurgy and lost her voice, couldn't get a dep at such short notice. Ahh well, at least we've got next weekend off so she's got plenty time to recover. I suppose that's the bugger about being a singer, unlike other instruments you can't just swap larynxes if it goes on the wonk.
  18. Do it, once you get the sensible use case of being able to walk out front to check the live mix, you can go have fun. A heap of folk being sticks in the mud and staying through in the lounge bar? Go and annoy them! I once went on a walkabout round the entire bar for a laugh. People listen with their eyes...
  19. Only tangentially related to this discussion, but I'm having a lot of fun with my Squier Jaguar H. The only thing it shares with this one is a body and headstock shape though.
  20. Got a link? I'm perhaps not as averse to my 20th Anniversary TRC as you, but it'd be nice to have the option...
  21. They should all be a standard size, so it shouldn't be too much bother - especially if you're going solderless and using all the EMG gubbins. The GZRs are well thought of, I have no personal experience of them so all I have is internet hearsay and gossip. I will say I've never read/heard anyone outright say awful things about them, put it that way.
  22. I must have got lucky - mine was prone to a bit of a flirt with gravity when it arrived, but adding the high mass bridge and the chonkster of a pickup seems to have tamed it somewhat - it won't stay at 45 degrees, but it's holding a position above the horizontal now (using a Neotech Mega strap - grippy, 4" wide at widest point, neoprene)
