The G&Ls with the Tritone preamp also work fine in passive mode with a dead battery (even with the battery removed) and the passive EQ (obviously) still works.

There is absolutely zero Gibson content in this bass.

I know I have an excess of basses, and I don't give a monkeys about it. It's want, not need, and I'm 100% comfortable with that. If you're not gigging, you only "need" one. If you are gigging then there's an argument for "needing" two (for backup purposes/being professional if nothing else). Anything beyond that is pure avarice, that's fine and I don't care to what depths of hell I'm going for my bass hedonism. FWIW (not that I need to justify myself to anyone) - I play *all* my basses on rotation at gigs and rehearsals and any which aren't getting a look in get sold.

Red Sub BT5110 - a sibling of the Ibanez Promethean

Last night we returned to Wilsons in Aberdeen, and it was a good one. First live outing for the Explorer, and it was a lot of fun - I managed not to silly billy anyone with it plus it sounded good to boot! Once again we had our guest "guitarist" Gordon with us for a bunch of songs, and I managed to get some one-on-one posing time with him during Whole Lotta Rosie. Decent crowd, some familiar faces and some new ones, just what you want to see. When people ask when you're coming back, you must be doing something right. Was supposed to finish at 12.30 but ended up playing until 12.45 due to ONE MOAR CHOON requests. Amp made it to the end of the gig - this was helped by turning on only 5 mins before we were due to start and switching it off at half time, it still felt unnervingly warm at the end (can feel the heat through the front panel) so it will need further investigation.

Everyone who has received a "duffer" has been unlucky - if you can't manage a failure rate of less than 10%, you might as well give up making instruments and go home.

If I didn't already have a G&L Tribute LB-100 (which I got for a pretty decent £350), I'd have been all over these. Congrats, it looks great. I think the anodised pickguard looks fantastic, but it's your bass, your way.

It's the whole "going to something you don't really want to be at, in order to be seen to be there" thing that really has me scratching my head.

I think you can only have one or the other of those. Maybe if you spoke nicely to a friendly, local garage/bodyshop they might be able to help you out, and be cheaper because it's not an instrument refinisher you're speaking to. But to do so you'll probably have to do all your own surface prep - sanding through the grades, perhaps applying grain filler if the body is a porous, open type of grain. If they're going to help you at all, they'll expect a surface that's ready to paint.

Hopefully some DHL tealeaf won't help themselves to it - it took Thomann two attempts to send me a Sire D5...

Decision does not equal Decision P. I own a Triad and I've tried a Decision P. I've not tried the original Decision but I have tried a Mercalli which has the Split Brick at the neck position. I found the Split Brick to be a smoother, more "polite" sound than the P Blade. They moved to the (reverse) PJ setup because they wanted to - perhaps for more differentiation between the Decision and the Mercalli? Otherwise the Decision is just a Mercalli with a Jazz bomb in the bridge position instead of a Thick Brick. Change both pickups - more of a "decision" to make between the two (pardon the pun).

That is the bridge pickup's official purpose on an SB-2. Nice for a bridge pickup to have a purpose for a change
