1. The reverse split P always made sense to me if I didn't think too deeply about it - if what I think is true that in general, the further from the bridge the pickup is, the "bassier" it is. Fatten up the D and G a little and calm the E and A a little - but is it any better balanced than before? Maybe it's worse! Maybe it's all a lot of nonsense, of course - people hear what they want to hear sometimes...
2. I suspect some people make up these tabs when they're nowhere near an instrument - as long as it's the right note, that'll do.
3. If your friend put the power wires directly onto the battery and it played fine then why would there be a problem with the preamp? Don't worry about it until the battery is back in a properly wired up battery compartment.
4.
Is there a safe option for posting without a hard case? Couriers chuck things around so carelessly don't they?
Yes, put it in a gig bag (or double box it) and pack it well with soft stuff like bubble wrap, air bags, foam, even scrunched up newspaper. Surround the bass completely with the packing materials. Pack it tightly enough that nothing moves when the box is shaken, but not so full that you risk bursting the box. Use good parcel tape. Use a good courier - I've sent many basses successfully using UPS via Interparcel (Interparcel's Economy/Standard/Premium services).
5. It's bogus, mate, it's got no strings for starters! Only kidding, I have nothing useful to add.
6. Someone please buy this bass, you can't get much more bass for that low an amount of money! I would, if I wasn't so far away!
7. 4th March 2016 @ Zee's Nightclub, Stonehaven. Thanks to Zee for providing the vid.
8. Can't help you with Belfast-y advice, but here in the frozen northern fortress of Aberdeen, I have never used any of those find a band websites. All bands I've been in have been organically grown* by good old fashioned luck, circumstance, talking to people, networking, hearing about opportunities, going for them. I think working behind the bar in a music venue helped - got to meet some of the contributors to the local scene long before I got properly involved. * I did once use Gumtree to look for a singer, we got one guy who we auditioned but passed on.
9. Maiden, AECC a few years ago. I think the support (Airbourne) were even louder though! And stupidly I forgot my plugs - I felt like I was underwater for some of the next day. Not cool.
10. It's an SB-300 which has been customised a bit (neck pickup changed, three point bridge added instead of the original which was rather flimsy with soft saddles, looks like it has been defretted and refinished) Optimistic price, considering it's not a particularly sought-after model and with the modifications.
11. Agreed - on Friday I gigged to about 20 folk. But they were all dancing around like lunatics, so it felt like 200 and I had a great time
12. Stories are everywhere, and they don't have to have anything to do with the size of the venue, the number of people there or the illustriousness of the rest of the bill.
13.
That is exactly what happens to us, there is a set list which the guitarist usually ignores, and often calls one song then plays another, while our harp guy (who's is rather deaf) is asking what key it's in...and somehow lip reads E as G or D. Somehow we haven't gone completely off the rails on stage yet, and I quite like the confused spontaneity of it all.
This would do my nut in.
14. I ditched my separates for one of these: I don't understand the witchcraft employed in making something this small sound as good as it does, and I'm OK with that
15. Two point bridge and solid headstock points to 1972 or early 1973. Enjoy
16.
New batteries and sorted. Was shocked with how quickly the new batteries supplied died
Did you leave a lead plugged in? Because if you didn't, this will happen again as something else is causing the power to be connected all the time and you will go through a lot of batteries.
17. Two weeks to go. Only stating facts here, not in the slightest bit looking forward to beer, curry and cake fuelled bassy shenanigans
18. Almost all basses are hundreds of miles away from me, so it doesn't matter to me where they are
19. In this position I'd sell any instruments which aren't getting played. This will become apparent when the rest of your basses compete for the rare occurrences when you fancy a change from "the one" Also, when it comes to losses when selling basses, I write it off as rent, as if I was just borrowing the bass. Seems easier that way.
20.
I know. I was including guitars in my original post too (of which the 2015 range was mare for them, including SGs and LPs). They've really thrown together some abominations without much thought. Or they've added quality in one spec/place and taken away elsewhere, which just leaves you rolling your eyeballs. They're simply not creative enough to release new models every year.
I don't think it's a question of creativity - there's way more variety in the back catalogue than many manufacturers. I really think they're a huffy bunch who occasionally get an idea but if it doesn't become a best seller in a couple of years it gets tossed. Right now they're back in the cave, licking the wounds caused by the commercial failure of the (2013-14) EB bass and the mauling they got from deviating too far from the programme with their 2015 guitar stuff.
21. Gibson are lazy because they can be. As long as people keep buying Les Paul and SG guitars, bassists can get to the back of the queue. It's not a recent phenomenon I like my modern NR Thunderbird, FWIW, and I like the look of it better than the old ones. There's something clunky and awkward about the old ones that I just don't like. Each to their own, I guess.
22. I tried one in a shop in Edinburgh - and really liked it. If they had the colour I wanted in stock I'd have been out the door with it, I'm pretty sure.
23. I'm another example of "tried a Rickenbacker 4003, didn't get what all the fuss is about". *shrugs*
