  1. Well, it's not supposed to happen, I can't imagine they put my coil in a special place versus all the other Jack Casady basses out there so perhaps my coil has gone bad in some nebulous way. I wonder if some sort of shielding between the pickup and the coil might mollify it (although I'm pretty sure that's what the metal case that the coil is placed inside and potted/epoxied into place is for). The other test would be to move the pickup out of the way (but still near a string) and then plug it in. I'll be back...
  2. Here it is - lives right next to it
  3. It's been annoying me for a while, I first noticed it with my old OD pedal (TC Electronic Mojomojo) where it had two levels of OD and the JC would get angry with the higher level of OD. These days I use a Joyo Monomyth and I think the JC hates this one more. I suspect I'm going to have to gut the JC and check all the wiring. Life is pain.
  4. Does anyone in Aberdeen city or shire have a Jack Casady and if so, would they be willing to help me out with an A/B test? Can pay in tea and biscuits!
  5. Sounds like you're set on going upmarket but I'll share my story anyway - I had an Epiphone Embassy that was so light, I sold it. Don't get me wrong, it sounded great but it was too light - my brain couldn't take it seriously, it felt like a toy - which sounds ideal for your requirements.
  6. Well don't effing buy it then. Problem solved.
  7. I need a bit of hive mind on this headscratcher. My Epi Jack Casady is havnig weird problems. It works fine played normally, but as soon as I engage my overdrive, it feeds back like a mofo. Normally, one needs to be pretty close to the amp to induce feedback and it's a slow build. This is happening when I'm nowhere near my amp. I was doing some checking tonight and I found that the transformer/coil was not securely fastened to the body inside the bass. I tightened up the screw so it's all solid again but that wasn't it. But during further testing, I was finding that with the volume on the bass turned all the way down, there was nothing coming out of the amp if no effects engaged. But when I turned on my OD, I got output through the amp! Also my harmoniser pedal was able to find a faint something to work with when engaged even when the volume is turned all the way down. It's also noisy, and the compressor makes the background hiss worse. I'm not having any issues with any of my other basses so I'm disinclined to blame anything on my pedalboard. Ground appears to be connected because touching the bridge or the position indicators on the pots lessens the background noise. I'm stumped - WTF is going on?
  8. Wood be woody, there's no way this is universally true.
  9. FYI - looks like the bass you bought is still a live ad on Facebook.
  10. Not all basses use the same sized allen key, and some are metric and some are imperial. Did the bass come with a key? Someone with more Fender knowledge will be along shortly but in order to help you get the right key, you'll need to let us know what bass it is, where it was made and what year it is. It's possible that the socket is stripped, I hope that's not the case, hopefully it's just a case of using the wrong sized key.
  11. Heh, I like those knobs - very space-age, like 50s style space-age. I dig.
  12. One rig. Mrs. Neepheid is very tolerant of my hobby, but there are limits. If my rig goes wrong, there's a feed from my pedalboard to the PA.
  13. It means whatever you think it means
  14. PA isn't bass specific, so you'll only be ruled out for extra credit.
  15. Well I appreciate you taking this thread seriously. I think repairs are fair game, rules say as much, so I reckon it passes for this time. That refinish you're proposing next year, well, it's an odd one but I would say that it's frivilous, even if the bass had no finish it doesn't stop it performing as a bass so I would argue that's an elective and therefore put you in jeopardy. How bad is the finish as it stands now?
  16. You'll have no bother flogging that RD once its here, given that there's a paucity of them in the local market, if difficulty of returning it is the sticking point?
  17. I'm prepared for a succession of date slippages until they finally arrive. I don't know why they're being so specific - they're just making a rod for their backs when it turns out the supplier has been feeding them a line. Thomann just simply say a rough range of a few weeks and leave it at that. Interestingly, all the 4 string Z7s at Thomann are showing as "6-8 weeks" EXCEPT the burgundy which is "12-15 weeks". Guess which finish is the most popular/wanted then?
  18. I bought a Yamaha BB1200 directly from Ishibashi in December. Excellent service, kept updated throughout, sturdy packaging. I'll be back. Slim local pickings for old school BBs, so I couldn't tell you how much I saved versus the local market. But I will say this - much better to go directly to Ishibashi than source via eBay, which seems to be rife with middlepersons who'll happily lump on a "finder's fee" onto the price - you're basically paying for them to buy it on your behalf then ship it to you. Not an entirely fair comparison, but looking at the cheapest BB1200 listed on eBay today, I saved about £200 going direct to Ishibashi.
  19. Big Poppa == Sterling Ball, in case it's not clear.
  20. July update: Well done everyone, only one person fell foul of the dreaded GAS in July, leaving 23 remaining. Strong GAS resistance, very impressive.
  21. Well, you do you. Me personally, when the GAS hits I just decide I want a bass and I don't give a monkey's what any of you think about it. Have courage in your convictions! The Guild looks decent and sounds pretty good from what I've heard. I like that it's got a couple of tonal options with the push pull. I'd be interested but I don't like short scale basses.
  22. That's just bad website updating - here's a video of someone playing a 5 string released in the last month - deffo has the reshaped lower horn...
  23. Naw, the original stubbies did exist as prototypes at least - here's one being played at NAMM (including the 3+1 headstock that I guess EBMM took exception to) Heh, not a chance - if I don't like it I'll be returning it!
  24. If there are none closeby that you can try, why don't you just buy one online and decide for yourself? You can always return it if it's not to your liking - and if physical stock is too far away for you to try then it'll be cheaper to courier it back than for you to toddle to where the basses are in person and come back home. Asking for other people's opinion here about something as subjective as sound I suspect is as counterproductive as the conclusions of the reviews you refer to - it's all opinion at the end of the day and ultimately the only person's opinion which matters in this situation is yours. What's your definition of "that vintage semi tone"? What is "that vintage semi tone" anyway? It appears that you know what you want to hear, so I say the most expedient way to figure it out is for you to get listening with your own ears.
