1. Seems like SBMM is OK to post here, so I recently dipped my toe in the MM world by acquiring this SB14. It's very blue and the white pickguard looks way better than the black stock one, to my eyes at least. War volume test tomorrow night at rehearsal, excited to hear what this can do.
2. I have something like this one: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Mercury-703-260UK-Switchable-Soldering-Stand/dp/B000L9A08M 20W normally, 130W if you hold down the boost button - great for getting some heat into pot casings for earth points etc.
3.
We bassists obsess about tone
Speak for yourself I take whichever bass I like the look of that night. I'm not saying all basses sound alike, but all my basses sound "good" as far as my definition of "good" goes so it doesn't really matter which one I pick.
4. I bought a bass from Carsten and it was an easy, smooth transaction. Good comms, prompt postage, can't ask for much more than that. Thanks Carsten
5. I find that these days I can see past all that because there's not much I can't fix. If I don't like the strings which are on it, I change 'em. If the setup's not right, I set it up to my liking. The only things I'm looking for when checking out a bass are electrical, structural and (in the case of a new bass) finish issues. Only these are costly/time consuming to fix and will make me think twice. There's no point to my mind about complaining about other things - factories churn these instruments out and I'm guessing that a final setup isn't factored into the cost of the instrument and would impact negatively on the final price.
6. The bass is now sold. Thanks for all the interest folks.
7. Nothing changed in that respect, I'm bringing down most of my stuff, for the education and entertainment of others and I expect others will be doing likewise.
8. Snoozing = losing. It's getting difficult to be interested in work with the bash around the corner - roll on Saturday!
9.
there's a moshing community?
community [kuh-myoo-ni-tee] noun, plural communities. 1. a social group of any size whose members reside in a specific locality, share government, and often have a common cultural and historical heritage. They reside in the mosh pit, they're self-governing, and they share a common urge to bounce into each other, therefore they are a community
10. WTF? Surely the moshing community won't put up with this kind of crap? I thought the whole point (not that I partake) was to jump around/into each other a bit, bounce off each other etc. but not going in with the intention of causing harm? Or did I miss something?
11. I've decided to sell my Gibson Non-reverse Thunderbird as I've got my eye on something else and it's the highest value bass I own which I harbour the least sentimentality towards. It's one of the recent reissues Gibson put out a few years ago. Pelham blue finish, mahogany body, mahogany set neck, rosewood fingerboard. 2x TB+ pickups, 2 volumes, 1 tone. Hardware has been changed to chrome and a Hipshot Supertone bridge added, but it can be returned to the the stock black tuners and black three point bridge if preferred. In excellent condition, comes with rarely used hard case also in excellent condition. I'm looking for £500 (£450 if you don't want the Hipshot). Postage extra, will likely be around £25.
12. The M-2000 has a pan/blend control, and a lovely neck with a profile between P and J that just feels great. Also the GTB one for sale on here is a certified bargain. Get in there before I buy another one
13.
Secretly I think most basses sound pretty much the same, 'it's in the fingers' is where it's at, imho. At the end of the day you want to sound like a bass guitarist playing a bass - and you don't need to spend a fortune on gear for that to happen. Even though over the years, I have.
It's not so much that, it's the rapscallions playing other instruments at the same time as the bass who render the nuances which you can hear from a soloed bass rather moot, at least as far as my ears are concerned.
14. Yup, sounds like bass to me Nice playing though, sir!
15.
Because people associate Yamaha with other stuff generally. I know I personally think of the old PSR range of bontempi crap keyboards. So I know a little monster in the back of my head does a sideye and says, "really?" when people say Yamaha's are really good.
I should have said "Why is it surprising to people on this forum that Yamahas are good when I can't recall reading a "Yamahas are crap" post, ever?"
16. Ibanez Talman TMB-100. Why is it surprising that Yamahas are good when I can't recall reading a "Yamahas are crap" post, ever?
17. Apologies for the pedantry - the white one is the GTB model - the GTS is trans black with white binding. GLWTS - I had a plain white Tribute M-2000 a while back - lovely neck, nice "goldilocks" inbetween fat and thin profile.
18.
Which Thunderbird? The latest Gibsons don't sound like the originals and the three Epiphone models all sound different to each other.
I bet you can type that with your eyes closed
19.
Please don't huff, the title was to draw you guys in to have an expository conversation for my (and others) enlightenment. Go suck a lemon!
That's a great suggestion - I'd find sucking on a lemon far preferable to putting up with your attitude. Good day sir!
20. A single instance of class D amp didn't work out == all class D amps are crap. Sounds legit.
21.
Why would people want the massive t-bird headstock?
It doesn't have to be massive (see above). Can't imagine most Dingwallers wanting it to be honest, but if this bass is to serve as a gateway drug for the more traditional bassists to more fanfrettedess in future, perhaps a nod to the past might work in its favour
22. The Thunderbird Studio had a much more svelte take on the standard headstock - perhaps some ideas there?
23. They probably couldn't make the headstock too Thunderbird-y for legal reasons. Gibson aren't quite as trigger happy as Rickenbacker but they've got form. I don't have a problem with the headstock, or the tuners.
24.
would "brave new world" by iron maiden count? it wasn't a reformation as such but did mark the return of adrian smith and bruce dickinson and turned out to be a pretty darn good album
I was tempted to say the same with exactly the same proviso
