  1. I really don't get what all the fuss is about. Why is there this fascination with having the original, shagged out pots anyway? It's this kind of counter-intuitive stuff that drives people to put new innards in old pot casings. Pots die, it's a fact of life and heavy use. Replacing them is the sign of a well looked after and maintained instrument, no? I'm pretty sure even the most... invested classic car enthusiast isn't that concerned with having the original, factory installed spark plugs in the engine, are they? Or have I just opened up an entirely new and even wrigglier can of worms?
  2. It's your bass... and I'm with you on the clear pickguard - I'm about to send my Z7's guard to earlpilanz for copying - I wanna see more of that burgundy (mist) and the routing around the pickups is surprisingly tight considering it was designed to be covered up - no swimming pools here! Personally, I'm glad they have kept their headstock. It's part of their identity. Compared to some of the utterly ridiculous monstrosities that exist in the world (which I'm sure are designed with the express purpose of ending up on "worst headstock ever" type threads/posts), the Sire headstock is pretty innocuous and I really don't get why people dogpile on it.
  3. Ooh, not seen that one before!
  4. Look again - the headstock has been shortened and reprofiled a little on the Z with the tuners smooshed together a little closer. Still quintessentially theirs though, and I think that's a good thing, f the haters Measurements (D5 compared with Z7) Headstock length from nut to farthest edge D5 - 239mm Z7 - 208mm Centre of E tuner to centre of G tuner (approx) D5 - 145mm Z7 - 131mm
  5. My favourites are Sire and the G&L eye gouger, because they inspire so much ire in people with way too much time on their hands.
  6. Last night, played Wilsons in Aberdeen with Nine Lives. Nice to get back into it after a weekend off. Overall a good gig, decent turnout and folk up for a boogie. Technically, it was a game of two halves though - first half went great, good levels, clear vocals, everything going great. Drummer wanted to add a monitor at half time and for some obscure reason this made everything go bad - couldn't get the monitor working anyway and the piddling about lost our lovely levels. Managed to get it back but then my pedalboard threw a bit of a wobbly. Might be a dodgy cable - swapped the one from the board to the amp and it seemed to help. Switching on the OD was introducing hum, worse when the OD was cranked. Managed to get to the end of the gig, but I have some fun pedalboard diagnostics in my near future, yay! Gear used: G&L Tribute LB-100 then Yamaha BB1200 into the usual Markbass tone cubes.
  7. I'm surprised everyone went straight for replacement and no-one suggested magic spray (switch/contact cleaner). Servisol Super 10 (I think it's called Kontakt now) - spray some inside the pot (there will either be a gap in the casing where the green arrow is pointing, or you might have to scoosh it in the wee hole in the top of the casing where the yellow arrow is pointing). Give it a good scoosh then rotate the pot fully one way then the other a dozen times or so, see if the clears the muck from the wiper and brings your pot(s) back to life.
  8. This is disappointing. This should be 100% a "no wrong answers" type thread, it's personal opinion! Stop effin' bickering about stuff that doesn't affect you in the slightest!
  9. First song I played live was The Specials, "Nite Klub", 2008 (September, I think), The Tunnels, Aberdeen. It was a one-off band my wife put together for a birthday party. I played a Squier Bronco.

    Impulses

I'm happy that you're enjoying the M. Very pretty in what looks like honeyburst? It highlights how everyone's different though. Having owned both a Tribute L-2000 and a Tribute M-2000 I vastly preferred the L. I found the M more "polite" for want of a better word. Also, just to correct you on a point you made, G&L only yanked the Tribute M-2000/2500. The Build to Order USA M-2000/2500 is still listed: https://glguitars.com/product/build-to-order-m-2000/ https://glguitars.com/product/build-to-order-m-2500/ Although availability off the shelf here is absolutely nil, USA and Tribute. I suspect G&L have hit hard times in the last few years and have basically shrunk back to their home market almost exclusively.
  11. You should count yourself lucky with your 11 day wait. I ordered mine on the 18th Nov (admittedly not Prime, I'm not that frequent an Amazon visitor) and my alleged delivery date is 27th-30th December. Just as well I'm stocking up and not needing them now. I had to change the delivery address though - I usually get nicknacks like this sent to the Amazon locker we have on campus here. So I did that, thinking they'd be here in a couple of days. The Uni's shut between Christmas and New Year - d'oh!
  12. "Oh yes it is!" "Oh no it isn't!" Repeat ad nauseum.
  13. It wouldn't be BC if a thread didn't veer off into the weeds for a bit...
  14. Well, that's not condescending at all - why don't you reach through the screen and pat me on the head while you're at it?
  15. Bully for you.
  16. I have this BFM Omni 10 cab which is surplus to requirement. It has seen better days - the tweeters don't work and the carpet's starting to peel off in places. It was given to me for free and I therefore pay it forward and want to give it away to someone else. Main driver is working fine - 250W, 8 ohms. PLEASE NOTE - I WILL NOT POST THIS CAB. I am in Aberdeen (although the cab is currently in Maud). If you want it, come and get it.

  17. "Why have you brought that brain? You're clearly not using it..."
  18. I am a stirrer, but TBF I only phrased it that way because the OP came in swinging on the 5 string side of things and it's the premise upon which this thread was started. I personally don't believe in any bass supremacy - I'll play what I like and I expect to be afforded the freedom to do that without judgement while I afford that freedom to others. Anyone coming up to me giving it all the "5 string's better/why aren't you playing a 5 string?" bollox (and it has happened IRL to me, BTW) will get the short shrift they deserve. I don't think I'm better than anyone else because of my choices that don't affect anyone else in the slightest, I just want to be left alone to work within the parameters I have decided are correct for me.
  19. I wouldn't record with it, but in the mix when the whole band is playing, I've found it tolerable. Definitely don't go more than 3 semitones down though in any circumstance, at least with the one I'm using - yes it technically does what you ask but it's not happy. Up seems to fair better.
  20. As long as no-one strays into "5 string superiority complex" territory, we'll all get along just fine
  21. Are you calling me a silly billy?
  22. I just use a pitch shifter if the singist says "can we do this song x semitones up/down?" I'm not re-learning the positions! We have the technology! I don't care if anyone thinks it's "cheating".
  23. Sounds legit. Serious business though - do you operate a swear jar in the middle of the board, and whoever lands on Free Parking gets the dosh?
  24. You want to play Monopoly? You strange, strange person
