Sorry if I misread you there. Perhaps I am insecure - but I've only started writing songs in the last few months so can you really blame me? For me it's affirming if folk get into my debut efforts, gives me the confidence to continue and to improve. Also, being told you're doing well by complete strangers is more valid to me - they don't know me so have no reason to blow smoke up my arse. To me there's absolutely no point me writing songs with words if I'm not going to share them with people and see how they react. If I want to write some words that no-one else gets to see, I'll keep a diary.

Why do people feel the need to clarify this anyway? Just play what you want to play, what you can afford (or not - it's none of my business if you are eating beans on toast every night because you bought a Fodera), when you like, how you like. There would have been a time when I might have scoffed at someone taking a very expensive bass to an open mic like it's showing off or something, or playing really simple stuff on a rare or expensive bass but I've come to realise that basically it's none of my concern and I should be far more focussed upon what I do with my basses. Some might say that my playing is not worthy of the kind of basses I appear with. There's no need for anyone to give me a hand with the self-flagellation though, I'm more than capable of telling myself how many types of stupid each cock up is High end this, POS that. The player is the important part. I know a couple of fantastic players who run rings around me. One plays a Squier Precision Special, one plays a Yamaha RBX170. Does it really matter?

Ach, that's a drag. Sorry to hear it, but onwards and upwards. I can't say I've had any major disasters before, gearwise. We once tripped the main circuit breaker at a gig in a giant shed, it ended up being pretty cool - the lights went out, the powered instruments went dead but the drums and the horns kept on playing until power was restored then we just carried on

Never had a problem with my TU-2, never felt the need to change. I'll change it when it breaks, if it ever does

I love my older Gibsons but I've not had the best of luck with new ones. Rather than the duff batch theory, it's more like it's time to clear out old, discontinued models to focus on the 2014 stuff. The NR T-bird isn't the only Gibson bass they've got on offer right now...

I know you had pot woes on yours - value too low wasn't it? Maybe mine actually are 300K or whatever they're supposed to be. I don't find myself wanting for highs, it gives a nice cheeky pop if you want to get all percussive and there's a reasonable amount of burp from the bridge pickup. Me, I'm mostly a neck pickup guy, but it's nice to have the option.
