1.
Our standard first question is to ask the customer what he usually uses and then try and find the closest thing from our stock. It's not always easy to match up but we always try to get as close as possible. If someone calls in advance we'd probably recommend bringing their own amp along (unless it's a monster!).
That's a level of attention to detail I've yet to encounter, good on ya.
  2.
There's a red one too.
I thought so, I wasn't sure if it was the lighting in the photo though so I didn't want to say for definite.
  3. Bet you didn't expect to see me in here Fender Cabronita Precision. Because I can't do anything properly
  4.
A bit long winded but that is how i wish more people would do signature instruments, go crazy and do anything they can think of that would be good. Liam
Sorry to keep harking back to the Epiphone JC, but what started off as a straight Epiphone reissue of the Gibson Les Paul Signature was pulled off course (and schedule) by Jack Casady's neck and pickup requirements. He personally worked with Gibson to recreate and then improve the low impedance pickup in the Les Paul Signature. Seems to have been pretty involved in the process, which I think is what you mean? Also as alluded to earlier, I knew I'd seen him with a white one which is unavailable to Joe Public - here he is, the flash git : Photo by David Sidle - http://www.flickr.com/photos/tanager22/
  5. I think the worst thing a shop can do is put you through some little practice amp when you're trying out an instrument. Surely you want it to sound as good as it can when the prospective customer is making up his or her mind? Case in point - was in Glasgow a couple of weeks back. Tried a bass in one shop and was put through an Orange crush combo which was buried behind another amp (?). Tried a bass in another shop and was put through a Mark Bass combo. From which shop do you think I bought the bass? Not the first time a shop has lost a sale from me because they made the bass I am trying sound merely functional. I try not to take it personally either, but there's a degree of feeling like I'm not being taken seriously in all this.
  6.
I'm looking out for that wrecked Yammy I sent you last year/year before - did you ever manage to make something of it?
That'll be the red one Yes, it's fully functional - I managed to reunite it with all the missing parts and even a set of the proper tuners. Fixed the maxed out truss rod with the old washer trick. Got a new bone nut made for it (thanks to Ou7shined/Rich). It's a really nice bass and I'm happy to have it in my collection. I'll be playing it at Belladrum festival this weekend Here it is (pictured before I got the proper Yamaha tuners and speed knobs):
  7.
Very cool idea! I want a spare space I can use as a cupboard now Does it have a door and a light in it as well?
No, there is no light and there is no door. The future plan is to put a shelf above it for stashing bits n bobs.
  8. Jack Casady uses his signature bass as supplied by Epiphone, although I think he sometimes gets them in colours that aren't available to us mere mortals (I'm sure I've seen a picture of him playing a white one for instance).
  9. Second hand G&L Tribute L-2000.
  10.
When I play something that sounds better I'll let everyone on the board know
Ahh, but will you search?
  11. This thread is pointless, because the only answer that matters in the grand scheme of things is the OP's one.
  12.
The way that people react to stuff like this is driving me further and further away from BC
Yup, I hear you.
  13.
Number 3 - "Arguably Gibson's greatest bass". So it's a pretty low bar then...
Oh, don't get me started
  14.
Captain Tom is indeed the man. It's at a place called the Deeside Inn. I might take you up on the translator if you can understand West Lahndahn?
Surely English is a usable lingua franca here? And you must try a buttery (also referred to as a rowie): imagine if you will 4 croissants compressed into the size of one with added salt. A coronary waiting to happen, but a delicious way to go. An Aberdeen(shire) peculiarity - you'll have difficulty finding them south of Dundee. Anyway, I'll try and save the date and come along, regardless of any language barriers
  15. Sorry, I was away for a few days so missed this. Good to hear you got sorted - Captain Tom sort you out? I'll try and keep the evening free and come see you play. Where in Ballater is your gig? Need a translator?
  16.
You guys are really milking this pun
Yo-gurt to be kidding me man.
  17.
Although once they warm up the cheese ones can play like butter.
Ghee whizz, those ones sound like they are the cream of the crop.
  18.
The neck profiles are chalk and cheese.
Neither of these materials fill me with confidence with regard to structural integrity
  19.
Well it didn't take them long to get their facts wrong!! I wonder how accurate the rest of the book is?
I bought it for the pictures.
  20. Obtain appropriate diameter hardwood dowel, drill out old hole to match dowel, fill hole with dowel/glue, drill hole to the correct size/location for the ferrule, reinsert ferrule.
  21. The tone controls are passive, cut only regardless of the state of the preamp switch - I find it odd that the behaviour changes with the switch. The only similar issue I've had was with a bust bass pot on my El Toro. 100% bass was fine but as soon as you turned it down below 90%, all the bass disappeared. Replaced the pot, problem unsurprisingly went away. Is this a genuine volume drop (you still have plenty low end in the sound, just quiet), or a removal of bass making it sound weedy and thin?
  22. Well, it is finally done and the basses are moved in: Only one space left, and that's reserved for the Ripper once it's done. Then I guess it's swapsies for me
  23. I don't have any records, but my Dad has one of the 12" picture discs of Curved Air, "Air Conditioning", that's pretty cool in my book.
  24.
I think it's becoming a bit of a misconception amongst some bass players that using flatwound strings on a P-Bass is somehow mandatory. I love the sound of flats on a P but often when I've only got one bass on stage with me and I've got to cover a lot of ground then roundwound strings on a P-Bass offer the best of everything. Solid and punchy without compromising bottom end.
Just a specific subcategory of the misconception amongst some bass players that playing a P-Bass is somehow mandatory?
  25. I played my first Precision in anger about 5 years ago. It was a mucked about with Squier with a Badass II and a SD Quarter Pounder. I don't even remember what it sounded like, apart from "like a bass". Five years later, it's a Cabronita Precision. I just can't get down with a vanilla Precision
