It's one thing to have a celebratory Fender thread - god knows it's happened before and it'll happen again. But when the "headstock fell off because I breathed on it" anecdotes and random but specific piss taking of other brands start appearing then that's when I hold up my yellow card. It's one thing to be happy with what you've got, but it's quite another to scoff at what others hold dear.
  4. If it's double humbuckers you want then you have two choices in the Tribute range - the L-2000 and the M-2000. The Tribute L-2000 has one of the fattest 4 string necks I've ever encountered (1 3/4" or 44.45mm at the nut and really chunky, deep profile). Which is great if you like that sort of thing Passive/"active" (I put active in quotation marks because the EQ is passive, cut only before it hits the preamp, which is either simply a line boost or there is a setting that gives a treble boost), switches everywhere (pickup selector, parallel/series, passive/active/treble boost). A lot of folks get confused about the EQ, I did when I first picked up an L-2000 but you get used to it. If you'd like a thinner neck (and perhaps an easier life) the Tribute M-2000 has a lovely neck that's 1 5/8" (41.275mm) at the nut and a good bit shallower. 18V active only 3 band EQ and pan, simpler (for some) to get along with versus the switches of the L-2000. I guess that's more in keeping with a 3EQ Stingray but lacks the coil switching options that an HH Stingray would have on the 5 position switch. I own both and I like 'em both.
  5. My wife has a subscription which I occasionally use - very handy in band rehearsals for those "doesn't that sound a bit like..." or "why isn't this working? Let's hear the original" or "why don't we cover this?" moments. Just plug the phone into the aux in and away you go

[/quote] I'll bite (owning several set neck instruments) - why do you think the joint moves in any way after the clamping pressure is released? Wouldn't that defeat the purpose? If it moved after the clamps are released then I would guess it would pull apart like a Curly Wurly when string tension is applied.

  9. No, I've never been sacked. I've declined to join after being offered a gig having done a couple of deps, I've left a band of my own accord and had a band disintegrate around me due to the main creative duo breaking up. All of these interactions have been done either in person or at least over the phone. Texts/emails are really cowardly and show a lack of backbone and respect. Not everyone thinks so though - the leader of the band I left emailed me later that day to tell me that my announcement at the band meeting was a "futile and theatrical gesture" - can't please everyone eh?

[/quote] Plugged in I hope - an unplugged semi-acoustic is only a little louder than an unplugged solid body. It's a little better for solo practice but you have absolutely no chance of being heard against anything acoustically when you consider that most acoustic bass guitars struggle to acheive this. Going back to the original question, I have an Epiphone Jack Casady and I think it's lovely, both in terms of looks and sound. But you'll need to plug it in to be heard over ... anything really.

  12. If the pickup of a bass represents less than 80% of the final sound output of an amplified electric bass then I'd be very surprised.
  13. I haven't forgotten about this, just been a bit busy with other things. It's away on its holidays to get refinished now. I've contacted Curt Novak about getting a choke made to original specs, waiting to hear back. I presume I'm going to have to sort out the mounting of the choke myself, so I'll have a bit of metalwork to do. Early Rippers had a simple L-shaped bracket soldered to the side of one of the pots, later ones had a plate which fitted underneath the pot like a washer with an angled bit for the choke to attach to. Both approaches then simply bolted through with an appropriate machine screw/nut. I'll probably go with the soldered bracket, because it's simpler to make, and I'm only making one of 'em. Off on the scrounge for a suitable small bit of metal then!

  15. It's a Ripper that's had some major reworking IMHO. Obviously it's been G-3ified (new pickguard and electronics). I wonder if the fretboard has been redone, as a maple boarded Ripper usually has pearl dots, not black ones. Replacement brass nut. Top strap button moved. Apart from that, logo looks OK, headstock looks OK, tuners look OK (from the front), body shape looks OK, set neck is OK, retainer plate for the through body stringing looks OK. Of course, a serial number would be nice
  16. I have played gigs with no PA whatsoever. Hotels, marquees, that kind of thing. I have played gigs in small places where it's just easier for me to bring the bass rather than further potter about with whatever PA is there. I also like to have some control over my own monitoring, because with the best will in the world, the sound engineer is a human being and isn't always going to get it right for you. Also, call it paranoia if you wish but can't help feeling that you're looking down your nose as you type.

  20. I pootle about in a 2005 Honda Civic Sport. With the seats down it's like a wee van (albeit with a not very flat floor). Not that I cart about a huge amount of gear - 4x10, head, bass, bag-o-bits-n-bobs, extension cable. I can put the 4x10 up on its side and split the rear seat so could still take 2 passengers. I usually have some room for other band members' stuff too. It's pretty flexible and works for me.

  23. That was just a test to see how it was coming along. When it and my Ripper restoration are finished there will be only one spare space. I'm under no illusions - my wife is eyeing up the floor space that my current stands are taking up to put a chest of drawers on

  25. Work is slowly progressing - the padding is quite a faff. I thought I could just sheet it across in one go but the stuff is too springy, so for each slat I'm having to cut two 20mm strips and a 40mm strip, then sticking each individual piece down. I do a couple and then get annoyed - and that's a good time to take a break. I'll get there though.
