Well, I really never thought I would see the likes, but it seems that someone cares enough about the Gibson Victory Artist to make these: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/370640504024 Clearly, I'm just not fanatical enough. And yes, before you ask, of course I've bought one. Seemed like the least I could do to redress the balance

Sorry, only pic of me in said hat to date - at the back wearing the trilby with the black band. You can't really see in this pic, but it's fuzzy and looks like it is made of Jersey cow. Proper festival hat, I got it for a fiver, bucking the trend of ridiculously priced novelty items at festivals But I digress - anyone want to buy my bass then? -
Does the slap sound hide the fact you can't play it right ?
neepheid replied to Black Coffee's topic in Bass Guitars
As per the title question..... No, slap is very easy to play if you aren't that good an allround player
I haven't the first clue how to slap, and I haven't got much more in the way of motivation to learn, so what does that statement say about me? Should I give up now? -

According to the manual for the LH1000, the minimum impedance for bridge mode is 4 ohms. You say you were using a jack socket on the cab - how did you hook it up - a Speakon > Jack cable? The bridge output on an LH1000 is only supposed to come out of the Speakon, I think. You "assumed" the cab was 4 ohm? So you don't know what the impedance was for definite?

Gibson Thunderbird iv Vs Epiphone Thunderbird Pro iv??
neepheid replied to x_Morning_Star_x's topic in Bass Guitars
Oh and to answer your other question, of course there's an element of paying for a name, it's the same if you buy a Fender vs. a Squier, or a Musicman vs. a Sterling, a G&L vs. a G&L Tribute. You're also paying American wages to the people who made it instead of far Eastern wages. People associate quality with high prices and get very angry when those expectations are not met. Is one "better" than the other? That's entirely down to how you feel about the instrument you are playing. I don't think any instrument has an automatic right to be "better" than another because of cost alone. Any factory can let a Friday afternoon "special" or a Monday morning "limited edition" slip out undetected I've played fantastic basses that cost me less than £100 second hand. I've played basses that command 4 figure sums that people rave about and thought to myself "what is all the fuss about?" It's really down to the individual. You won't know until you try, but I wouldn't get too hung up about what other people think. Try 'em both, if you can. -
Gibson Thunderbird iv Vs Epiphone Thunderbird Pro iv??
neepheid replied to x_Morning_Star_x's topic in Bass Guitars
Somewhat difficult to judge, they're quite different. Passive vs. 2 band active. mahogany/walnut through neck vs. maple/walnut through neck. Different pickups. Different bridges. I quote Gibson/Epiphone themselves with regard to the Thunderbird Pro - "No previous Thunderbird model has ever sounded like this!" Put simply, the ergonomics will be similar (same body shape, same nut width but I think the Epi Pro neck is even slimmer than the Gibson Thunderbird one) but the two will sound very different to each other. But they'll both sound like basses -
If you don't ask, you don't get. There have been many occasions when I have asked if they would be willing to package it up and they've said yes, this "it doesn't have a hard case" stuff is bogus - if it's well packed then it won't be a problem. If it's well packed then that's what insurance is for. Failing that, if they still insist on local collection you could always ask on here if someone could pick it up on your behalf. Many here would do that for a few beer tokens, I know I would (not that there's anything worth bothering with up here, apart from an ultra rare Guild B402-A )

I've got a problem with duplication of effort, but that's just the OCD in me. There you go > http://basschat.co.uk/topic/183626-new-squier-telecaster-bass/

Do you mean setup in general rather than tuning? I check my tuning before every time I play, regardless of the ambient conditions.

Bought a fretless Yamaha from Chris. A good guy to deal with, keeps you updated at all times, bass well packaged and promptly sent. Thanks

Gibson Thunderbird Non Reverse reissue (September)
Of course I could be proved wrong, but this is Gibson 2012 we are talking about.
More like this is Gibson since the turn of the century we are talking about -
Except it won't acknowledge the existence of the only Yamaha bass I own... Generally I find the Japanese version more useful since it allows you to browse and has photos of most of the instruments.
Agreed on the usability and pics but it's far from complete also. Many BBs are missing - BB300, BB350F, BB450, BB1100s to name but a few that I can think of off the top of my head. The American site at least is aware of all these models, even if it is a little stingy with the detail.

Gibson basses, have they always been a bit "different"?
neepheid replied to Dom in Dorset's topic in General Discussion
The SG Range were just jumping on the bandwagon and had quite a few weaknesses. Look up Tutti Fruiti on You Tube by Little Richard and his band and at the right moment you'll see an early Gibson Violin Bass similar to Maccas Hofner bass.
Wow, opinions expressed as fact and vague, unsubstantiated accusations of inferiority, that's new. -
What kind of Yamaha bass is/was it?

+1 for grolschlocks. Free beer with each washer

Yes, bless them, they have always been a bit "different". Pottily designed, commercially stillborn monstrosities. And it's one of the reasons I like 'em -

In a case (and by case I presume you mean hard case) I can't see it making much difference. Furthermore, as I like to see and be able to pick up a bass whenever I want to, I have mine lined up in a rack, so I haven't really given it much thought.
-
You really can't go wrong with one of these. I have owned a BB614 and currently have an older BB300. They're fantastic to play with comfy necks that will offend neither those with preferences for half baseball bats (me) or skinny Jazz aficionados, and sound great. And with the matching headstock too - all round nice looking bass. And all for £120? Just get in there before someone else does.

Carvin Basses - Why Have They Never 'Made It' Over Here?
neepheid replied to merello's topic in Bass Guitars
Simple. Does the brand name begin with "F"? The big F will kill everything in the end and we'll live in a homogenised world of P, J and the occasional weirdo that slips out undetected -
And they're arguably the fuglyest bass they ever put out.
Indeed - it's those mini MFD pickups that intrigue me. Mind you, the fact that the control plate doesn't tally up at all with the shape of the body is mitigated somewhat by black crinkle on a black body: I'd be all over that particular finish combination. And the bass as a whole? There's something reassuringly industrial about it. It isn't pretty, but it will sure as hell get the job done.
As the lucky owner of one of the first G&L basses ever made, I have to say Matt you are wrong wrong wrong and for this act of heracy I demand that you relinquish your G&L fanciers membership pin forthwith. Also I think I know you and your whacky bass collection well enough to know that if you'd scored an old L-2000E instead of a modern one that you'd be lovin' and not hatin'. I'm personally not a big fan of the eye-gouger headstock but it wouldn't seriously put me off a great sounding bass... tone before looks and all that.
Hey man, you know that if I had a few spare hundred sloshing about the place then it'd be an El Toro I'd be after, and they're eye-gougers too.
