1. Yup, Procell 10 packs all the way for me. Not just for the active basses - tuner pedal needs them too
 2.
"Cba lookin it up"
That's the sad part right there. Information at our fingertips these days, and they "cba lookin it up". I weep for the future.
 3.
I tried cocktail sticks and no joy. The dowel solution seems like the best with Araldite applied to the screw when it's inserted. I think I'll drill a little pilot hole for the screw though just to try and avoid any splits. Thanks all!
You absolutely must drill a pilot hole first. Without it you could split the wood or strip the head off the screw when you attempt to drive it in.
 4. There aren't any wires hanging down from the drivers and making contact with one of the cones? This happened in my Zoot cab. A second pair of eyes (thanks, Rich) a couple of cable ties later and the problem was solved.
 5. My wife has one rule (which I heartily support) - all instruments are to be played. I can have as many as I like, but if any fall out of favour then I must sell them. No basses under the bed/stashed in the attic in my house.
 6.
Okay, so I took the neck off, adjusted the truss rod, put the neck back on, applying a bit of pressure to push it back into alignment. Result? Strings aligned, action nice and low. Plays just like my other P now. Panic over.
Only some of us were panicking Glad you sorted it out.
 7. There might be a minuscule amount of "give" in the neck pocket so the neck can be loosened and then tilted ever so slightly left/right as needed. Don't need a lot of lateral movement to make a big difference to the overall alignment.
 8.
I had them on my 4 for a while - far too high tension. I've now gone the opposite way and fitted a set of TIs.
Same here. My second most disliked type of flatwounds (the first being Rotosound). About as compliant as a stroppy teenager.
 9.
WTF is that?
A split P pickup, mirrored. Hutton said it was all done with mirrors.
 10.
It's all done with mirrors Matt.
But then doesn't it end up looking like this?
 11. This is quite surreal for me, as it's usually me getting frothy mouthed at people slagging off Gibson basses. I'm not sure who's genuinely upset, who's taking the mick and basically why the world appears to have turned upside down
 12. Too late, it's SOLD!
 13.
Are those Thunderbird type pickups?
No, they're Z pickups, able to be coil tapped (hence the mini toggles).
 14. Is it OK to be SG and long scale?
 15.
was the bass player in the Stereophonics doing an 'economical' bass line to standing there? This is the one I've been unsuccessfully trying to play, at the right speed anyway D--------6-----9-----7--6--------6-----9-----7--6 A--7--7-----7-----7--------7--7-----7-----7------ E------------------------------------------------ G------------------------------------------------ D--------6-----9-----7--6--------6-----9-----7--6 A--7--7-----7-----7--------7--7-----7-----7------ E------------------------------------------------ but I can manage the Stereophonics one comfortably .
Is this right, or is this a simple version? http://www.ifb.co.uk/~matthew/mp3/sgz%20soundclips/01_neck_series_tone10.mp3 I'm probably still a bit slow... McCartney I ain't.
 16.
I wonder if there will ever be an epiphone version..hm.
17.
Yeah, I totally wasn't suggesting there was - I assumed the fact I phrased my original post predominantly as a question would've been enough to convey this. Seems I've stirred up a bit of Fender rage though, which absolutely wasn't my intention!
I know you were merely being curious
 18. I had a Yamaha BB300 with the reverse P pickup. It sounded really nice. Because I didn't hear the pickup aligned the other way round, I can't say whether or not its "reverseness" was the reason why. My current Yamaha is a BB450, and its P pickup is the Fender way round. It sounds really nice. It sounds like a nice theory but don't get too defensive, Fenderheads! Ultimately a bass either sounds good or it doesn't and there isn't a "right" and "wrong" in this.
 19. See the section on humbuckers: http://www.1728.org/guitar.htm

 21. Bump for MEGA PRICE DROP to £600. Take advantage of my GAS induced weakness!
 22. At the risk of coming across as a rabid fanboy, I have owned and played both of these types of basses and I can honestly say that you won't be disappointed with either, especially at these prices. Will knock spots off anything you could buy new for the same money.
 23.
Thanks for the feedback guys. I was worried I would unleash some hate from the G&L purists.
Relax, I for one am not put out by your modification. Considering the body shape of the ASAT there's a historical reference point for it and I think it looks nice. Now if you had replaced the MFD pickups it might have been a different story...
 24. It's not for me, and I'm not an idiot either
 25. Yamaha basses, no question. You could probably pick up an RBX170 in a shop for less than £200. I haven't played one, but my bass tutor plays one in his soul band, I saw him play once and it sounded pretty good to me and he seems to have no desire to get anything else. Take from that what you will. My experience is mostly with BB models, a little more expensive, but still great basses for the money (played a BB614, 300, 350F, 450).
