1. What tuning are you proposing - F,A#,D#,G#? Am I reading you right? Why tune up? Just move everything you're playing one fret further away from the nut? Or, if you absolutely must have open strings then use a capo?
2. The G&L Tribute M-2000 impressed me, and it had a Tribute L-2000 and an El Toro raising my expectations first. Not only did it defy those expectations, it even managed to carve out a niche for itself when here was me thinking it would be a slightly "active" sounding L-2000. How wrong was I? The preamp is matched beautifully to the MFD pickups. The frequencies at which the bass/mid/treble controls operate are well chosen. There's lots of bass, mad (possibly too much) range on the mid control, and even with the treble cranked up full there's a musical sweetness to it and none of the harshness that I have found with the treble boost function on the L-2000. All it ever seemed to do was accentuate string noise and generally sound quite grating to the point where I gave the setting up as useless. Not so with the M-2000. Also love the feel of the "reissued" #12 neck profile, slightly thinner at the nut than the Tribute L-2000 and quite a bit shallower, but its no Jazz. It's just comfortable. Familiar looks, simpler operation, and sounds quite different to its sibling. I think G&L are onto a winner with this one, should calm down those who find the L-2000's array of switches a bit daunting, irritating or off-putting, while not committing outright blasphemy to those die hard tookay fans. In summary, I was pleasantly surprised by my Tribute M-2000. Bought on a whim, but it's more than good enough to earn an extended stay in my collection
3. The playing's that bad, eh?
4. You'll only ruin it if you rush it or cut corners.
5.
Who's this Tim bloke then?
http://basschat.co.uk/topic/111461-why-does-no-one-buy-anything-on-this-site/ Wow, it's been going on for more than 2 years now
6. Waste of tim.
7. Hmm, obvious stuff first, have you wound the string far enough down the post? Does the vibration stop if you press on the portion of the string between the nut and the tuner? Is it just one string, or some/all of them?
8. Before: After (refinish done by Rich - Ou7shined):
9. I don't swap basses on a gig unless something very bad has happened
10. Nah, it's just slowly grinding the life out of us.
11. Hmm, while having some historical importance, one can see it's a prototype (ill fitting pickguard, early oversized attempt at the flying f-hole inlay for example). I'd rather have a later, more refined model. Oh wait, I have one
12.
Call me old fashioned.
OK, you're old fashioned.
13. Bump - soundclips in case you missed them being added to the original post - http://www.ifb.co.uk/~matthew/mp3/sgz%20soundclips/
14. I'm in two minds about this. The scientist in me says that surely there can only be so many combinations of the 12 notes (A, A#, B, C, C#, D, D#, E, F, F#, G, G#) at our disposal in western music. It's all opinion though. I will never forget the moment in 1997 when I first listened to Radiohead's OK Computer. That was a totally absorbing moment that I haven't come close to since and easily the match of any of the albums you mentioned (and believe me, I used to stare, mesmerised at the turntable playing my Dad's vinyl - there was something about the tempo of Cream's N.S.U. that seemed to lock in with the 33 1/3 rpm of the record label...). You may disagree, and that's fine, but that's my top moment of "recent" history. Now that I'm older, and my ability to appreciate new music seems to have forsaken me for the time being, I find myself mostly ignorant of what's been happening in the last 5-10 years. That's my fault, not the music's.
15. I don't frown upon it. I don't care. It's none of my business what the seller bought something for and I will never ask. I would vehemently oppose any market controls other than enforcing accurate and proper description of goods, bumping rules and correct sale conduct (like sending the goods promptly, not overcharging for postage, leaving accurate feedback). Price controls and a ban on reselling something within a certain timeframe? This is a market, not a padded sandbox.
16.
Ahh, but could all those heavy basses eventually become light ones?
Seeing as I'm in a long term relationship with a couple of all maple Gibsons, my shoulder and back and only but hope
17. This exceeds by a significant margin my levels of giving a damn If anything, my interest in this level of detail has diminished greatly over the few years I have been playing to the point that I'm firmly in the "if it sounds good then it is good" camp. If someone wants to put a bass in quarantine and weigh it every day for 20 years then fill your boots
18.
ffs someone needs to get the floyd into therapy and help them all get over Syd Barrett hey, what a feckin yawn they all are with him. i'm not a floyd fan so dont get what all the fuss is with SB, what exactly was so great about him?
I'm not going to help you with your query because of the harshness of your mean-spirited opening statement.
19.
Why on earth would anyone be embarrassed to say they like a band? What a strange old world we live in.
Because you're not supposed to rock the boat! You will be mercilessly pilloried for your unusual opinions!
20. I think when people see "Jazz knobs" they expect these:
21. Surely all you need is something with sideways adjustability - Schaller 3D (an excellent bridge IMHO) or the Hipshot A Style (Fender mount) would give you this flexibility and should (no guarantees) retrofit over where an old BBOT used to be. Worst thing is you'd have to fill/redrill a few holes. EDIT: Ignore me, I've just re-read the OP and just realised that you've already been down this route. That'll teach me to skim read
22. No-one walks in Houston. It isn't even universally kitted out with pavements - sorry, sidewalks.
23. I've found that a 25W iron is a bit too weedy for doing big stuff like soldering to pot casings. You get ones with a "turbo boost" button so it's not too savage for little stuff normally but can give you extra oomph when you need it, that's quite handy. Also, soldering is a skill and an art. I've been soldering stuff on and off for years now, and I'm still crap at it. Crap in the sense that the end work will be functional and secure, but it won't be "pretty" (like neat and tidy pretty). Definitely have a few practice goes on some old stuff before you do it on something you care about. Other rookie mistakes I can think of - don't use the soldering iron as a prying tool while desoldering, that's not what it's for. Keep the tip clean otherwise it will gradually rot away.
24.
Pics please
+1, or none of this ever happened
25.
It's definitely an option, but being an unusual bass it'll be a custom 'plate and therefor I expect not cheap. I'll get a quote at some point for sure.
Your prerogative of course, but I got the one off my Gibson Victory copied (can't get much more weird than that) and I don't remember it being too bad. Also, the very reason I got it copied was because some klutz had covered the original in something like silver hammerite and ruined it. Suffice to say, I'm not a fan of people painting pick guards You've got a lovely bass, if you're going to make changes, make them easily reversible. Once you factor in the evil paint you'll need to have any kind of durability, your time and the possibility for error and the potential damage to future real value, I'd say that painting your pick guard is a false economy at best. Rant over, ultimately it's your bass and your call.
