1. I hate crap sound on stage. All I ask is that I can hear myself. It doesn't have to be pleasant, but it should be audible. At my last gig I could hardly hear myself, was going mostly by feel. People out front said it sounded great, but it wasn't a great gig to play, constantly wondering if what you're playing is right and realising that you'll never know so you just have to plough on and hope for the best. Disappointing.
2. I've owned three acoustic bass guitars (note the past tense) and the only advantage I can find is they're good to just pick up and play by themselves, particular ones with built in tuners. On their own they can be drowned out by a single acoustic guitar, and amplifying them brings all the problems already alluded to in this thread. I won't be partaking again. They can be beautiful of course: But regardless of how pretty it was, it was pretty pointless and no, you can't see an acoustic bass on the radio
3.
I ordered the 250w head version of that thing, plan to use it with a self-made cabinet with Eminence 15" woofer (so the eventually bad enclosure of the combo is out of the equation). Should receive it tuesday.
Can you expand upon the phrase in bold? I don't understand what you mean there. What does "eventually bad" mean? Over time it'll break? You'll outgrow it?
4.
and I'm not sure the 'clones' are the same high quality, component-wise.
As I have no evidence with which to rebut your suspicion, all I can say is ask me how it's doing in a year's time - the first year of my five year warranty.
5.
The T shirt looks white to me. You've tried this haven't you Mr Neep, go on admit it tsk tsk
I may have had a wee listen to it, yes
6. Heh, well, I tried
7. Right, let's put this issue to bed. Do we all agree that a Polytune pedal is white? It's cream. And loud
8. That middle pic with the organ pipes behind you, what a great backdrop.
9. Vote for repair. Headstock repairs done well are stronger than they were before the break. There are many vintage instruments out there with repairs and it doesn't seem to affect the potty prices they go for
10. Right, for all you amp geeks I took the lid off yesterday: All looks compact and bijou in there. If it goes pop then I guess it'll just go pop though - looks a lot closer to the definition of "no user serviceable parts inside" than my old Hartke HA3500
11. Would it be possible to stop going to the last unread post when tapping on the thread titles? This behaviour is inconsistent with the full site where clicking on the title takes you to the beginning of the thread. It's really annoying to have to scroll back to the top when I expected to get the start of the thread. The star/dot at the beginning of the thread title should perform this function, and a link referencing the last poster should take you to the end.
12. Another vote for Neotech straps here.
13. http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/bass - click on the little speaker icons.
14.
sigh, you should never, NEVER have more knobs than strings.
Switches are OK though?
15.
The lack of tone change when I pan suggests that the bridge pickup may not be outputting at all. The bridge pickup is about 2.5mm from the strings so it's fairly close anyway.
But surely if you pan all the way round to the bridge pickup and it's not working at all then all you would get is silence? Unless the pan pot has a limited range? Dunno - I think I have exhausted my usefulness
16. Wow, 4 pages and only 3 mentions for Gibson (and only one of those is Gibson as an entire brand). I think just about everyone deep down has a secret hankering for one
17. Sounds like 2 problems here - bridge pickup quiet (maybe raise it up a bit towards the strings?) and are they wired correctly? If they're out of phase then they'll have the effect of cancelling each other out, and I might be speaking rubbish here but if the bridge pickup was louder then it would have a more pronounced effect on the volume when they're mixed.
18.
Be careful with this...... it's only the Neutrik NLJ2MD-V that allows you to do this. Most manufacturers do no use this as standard as it's an expensive socket. You could end up with a jack plug stuck in a Speakon socket if you are not careful
No danger with this, the hole in the middle is too small to even think about accommodating a 1/4" jack
19. I guess I've never felt drawn towards pointy basses (BC Rich and the likes). Never felt compelled to get anything with more than 5 strings, and even then I've only ever owned one 5 string (which I sold). But apart from that, I'll try anything once. Not fussed for Fenders, but I have owned Squier P and J before, so I can't really say I've never wanted to own one - I must have at some point
20. Nah, another cost saving - it's a speakon only
21.
Ta for the review - my interest bad been pricked by the description on the G4M website but real world feedback is useful to calm "too good to be true" fears. I've got a couple of questions: How many speaker sockets are on the head? If more than one, is it possible to connect up an extension cab with the head still in the combo and connected to it? Cheers in advance.
There are 2 speaker sockets, 1 jack and 1 speakon. The speaker in the combo uses the jack socket. I haven't got a speakon equipped cable so I haven't been able to test this yet. Further complication is that my only 8 ohm cab has no speakon inputs, so I would need an even less useful speakon to jack cable. I presume it would be possible, after all one of the attractive possibilities is putting a 1x10 extension underneath the main box to form a modular 2x10. Anyone nearby able to help me out with a test? Either a shottie of a speakon > jack cable or a speakon equipped 8 ohm cab?
22. Not played huge places but so far I've not needed more than 350W into a 4 ohm 4x10. Like, turned up to 4. I hope that by the time I have an ego that requires an 8x10 then I'll have a roadie or two to put it in place
23.
There's a lot of people like yourself who list the gear they use in the signatures so a browse through a selection of threads in this forum and the general Bass Guitars forum should reveal plenty. However I have something which IMO is far important in my sig - a link to my music.
Ugh, this sounds a bit "holier than thou" I have both, for what it's worth. I guess that just means I take up an annoying amount of space. With that in mind, have a font size reduction and losing one line
24. In a pinch, an appropriately sized Torx driver (if it exists) can maybe push into whatever corners are left if it's not too far gone. I've used a T27 to move a 5mm stripped hex before - point to point it's 4.99mm.
