Necks are too thin! Boo!
If you're running active pups then a preamp really needs to figure somewhere in the equation.
Preamp doesn't NEED to be there - I have run 2x EMG-HB through a passive VVTT setup without problem - in fact that's how they're supplied, with a battery clip and a passive VT loom. However, an active EQ circuit is desirable to give you more control over the sound, but it's entirely optional.

Humbucker pickup into a Fender P bass
neepheid replied to matt-bass-sparkes's topic in Accessories and Misc
Fender have dabbled in such experiments themselves: -
Welcome to the forum. Nice line-up there

Yup - the last time I was recording in a studio and I heard the bass by itself I thought it sounded awful. Bring in the rest of the band and it sounds fine though. What does that tell me? No solos for me

I bought a Boss ODB-3 overdrive pedal from Mike. Despite Christmas getting in the way he managed to get it to me before the end of the year, just in time for my birthday Good comms, no worries.

Darren bought a Boss limiter pedal from me, paid promptly and was patient while Christmas intervened and delayed my posting of it. Good guy all round.

I think the bridge has a more subtle effect on the overall tone of a bass than some may claim. The biggest difference I ever heard (or thought I heard ) was when I swapped out an Epiphone/Gibson 3 point bridge for the Hipshot Supertone. To me it seemed the sound was more "focused", perhaps the attack was a little clearer and the notes rang out a little better, but I'm quite sure that a part of that was my brain wanting to hear that after shelling out money for the bridge, waiting for it to jump over the Atlantic, fit it, turn the place upside down for a couple of hours trying to find the imperial allen key which Hipshot had omitted to include and setting up For me, the principle reason for swapping out bridges is one of functionality rather than tone. Any bridge that improves your ability to set up your bass better is a good thing as far as I'm concerned, be it upgrading to individual saddles from shared, individual string height instead of moving the bridge as a whole, or adding the ability to fine tune the string spacing (as not all basses are created equal, especially at my price point) then I'm all for it. Also I'm all about direct replacements, or at least ones which don't leave any visible marks. I've had a Badass before, and the best things about it were its imposing bulk and the fact it said BADASS on it. But filing saddles (yes I know you can get notched ones)? The thick base plate sometimes necessitating neck shimming/tilting? It's not a one size fits all item, it isn't foolproof and to my mind there are far simpler ways to improve a bass than a Badass. To answer your original question, no, in my opinion Badass bridges are not the best choice for ALL basses because they don't fit a lot of basses without modification/damage. I don't even think they're the best choice for ALL Fender basses, if that's what you meant by "ALL basses" If I was upgrading a Fender type bass then I'd go for the Hipshot A-style Fender mount, or the Schaller 3D - both of which provide the upgrade of limiting lateral saddle movement and the ability to fine tune string spacing.

Cham bought some bits and bobs from me. Everything went great - prompt payment, good comms, you can't ask for more. I would not hesitate to deal with Cham again.

Not much really. I've hit the wall when it comes to basses. A nice thick, wide strap for my Gibson Victory Artist A couple of gig bags in order to transport my harem to Moffat Maybe upgrade the old TU-2 to a TU-3 If I'm feeling flush then I wouldn't mind scoring appropriate hard cases for my Gibson basses.

That's an MB-4 (Modern Bass). They still do it, but festooned with skulls and crossbones. http://www.squierguitars.com/products/sear...rtno=0328001565

Bass bits for sale

It's all about the gear spotting for me. I love seeing unusual basses in action. If I'm watching a band then my eyes and ears do inevitably drift towards the bass. I have a rubbish poker face so I probably do screw up my face when I hear a bum note, and look slightly pale and shocked when I see someone playing something I have no hope in hell of playing (yet).

I'm pretty happy with my current lot: Epiphone Les Paul (Not So) Standard: Pros: Love the looks, chunky neck, the addition of the selector switch nailed its worst flaw, 3EQ EMGs is about as far removed from the stock pickups as you can go, short of ACG filter pre Cons: It's a little heavy, 3 point bridge sucks Gibson G-3: Pros: Love the looks, medium weight, chunky neck, simple passive bass Cons: A bit beaten up, a three trick pony, some of the grub screws in the bridge are knackered, pearl dots on a maple board are hard to see. G&L Tribute L-2000: Pros: Wonderful flexibility of pickup selections, chunky neck, love the colour, quite simply the closest thing to perfection I have Cons: Perhaps it's a little heavy, but I'm being super critical now. Danelectro Hodad: Pros: Light as a feather, 3 pickups with all options available, a sound all of its own, crazy looks, Cons: Dunno how durable it'll be. Gibson Victory Artist: Too early to tell, I've only had it in one piece for a few hours and only played it for minutes. It won't knock the G&L from the "if you could only keep one bass" slot - it's too damn heavy! Love the looks, neck feels great (especially after the super smooth finish Rich has put on it), should have a decent range of tonal options, fully active/passive (as in the passive mode is bass/treble cut 0-10 and the active modes are bass/treble cut/boost +5/-5) An overall pro point for all of these - they're not Fenders. I mean no offence by that comment, I simply strive to be wilfully different. I have owned a few of the bottom end of Fender's output (Squier P, J and Bronco) and they were usable enough instruments but they just didn't excite or interest me like the ones I have now do.

Not 100% looking forward to road-testing my Gibson Victory Artist, that's all I can say. Hoping that a Comfort or Mono strap will mitigate its considerable weight (at least 11lbs), I'm still young damnit!

Got some bits and bobs which would tart up an existing bass or do a project bass proud. Neck weighing you down? P pickup overpowering your J in your PJ? Set of 4 Hipshot Ultralite tuners - 1/2" (big) posts, elephant ear buttons, satin bodies, chrome buttons, reversible (currently 4 in line right handed) - £60 posted complete with screws Hipshot A-style brass bridge (chrome finish) - a heavy duty bridge with 3 way adjustable saddles, quick top loading or string through. PLEASE NOTE: this will not fit directly on a Fender without modifications - mounts with 4 screws, not 5. Screws included and funny imperial allen key to adjust the saddles. £50 posted. No pics yet, but a couple of pickups - used, but decent length on the wires: Seymour Duncan SMB-4a 4 string for Music Man (alnico): Full info here - http://www.seymourduncan.com/products/bass...mb4a_5a_alnico/ Seymour Duncan SJB-3b Quarter Pound for Jazz Bass (bridge): Full info here - http://www.seymourduncan.com/products/bass...jb3_quarterpou/ Alnico MM - £40 posted Quarter Pound Jazz - £30 posted Cheers Matt
