Hi there This may not come to pass (have to win it first!) but I have my eye on a bass that is collection only in Newcastle. I have messaged the seller to see if they are willing to post but have received no word back, so I'll take that as a no. Would a local BCer be willing to pick up on my behalf and then post it on to me? Beer tokens will be tacked on to the cost of postage, of course. Thanks

32 so far since September 2008. Not even one a month on average. Bloody part-timers, eh? To be fair, I have broken through the one a month barrier for the first time this year.

Just work the BB300 - a reversed P pickup sounds better than the regular P layout in my humble opinion anyway. I've just done my last two gigs with my BB300 and it sounded reet good (to my ears anyway). But on the other hand, if you want it, get it. If you don't like it, sell it.

Played at Belladrum Festival on Friday evening. Mixed feelings about it to be honest. On the positive side, being not in a tented stage, but rather playing out to the open field we still managed to stop a fair few folk in their tracks and they stuck around for a few songs and danced, so that was good. However, the onstage sound was poor, we played too fast most of the time, and being on the smallest stage at a festival with so much other stuff going on gave me a real "peeing in the ocean" kind of feeling. My first festival gig. 45 minutes. Was that it? What is all the fuss about? I didn't even stay long after the gig, despite the festival being willing to tolerate our presence for the whole thing. I just wanted to get home for a number of campsite related reasons (noisy neighbours who we feel shouldn't have been in our area, our crappy moisture trap of a tent) above and beyond that sinking feeling when you feel you just didn't perform as well as you know you can. Got a bit of downtime now (no gigs booked until October) so we can relax, refresh, reflect and move on up from this which was - for me anyway - a bit of a damp squib. I wish we had ended our little tour with the gig at Last Bus Depot - we played for an hour and a half and I didn't want to leave!

HTC Hero - awful, don't bother HTC Desire S - awful, don't bother - gets totally swamped and distorts at a pin dropping (slight exaggeration but mine at least is shockingly bad) Samsung Galaxy S3 - very poor at picking up bass

It is worth noting that the blend part of the System (if indeed this is the System and not simply the Control) only works with EMG pickups, but if you handle the volume/switching/blending yourself you can still use the control part (the big board) with any pickups you like. I used a BQC Control in an Epiphone Les Paul bass and even though it had EMG pickups I set up my own vol/vol/3 way switch and fed the results of that to the BQC.
no need to become sarcastic. usually you get what you pay for.
There blooming well is a need. If everyone took that patronising, "I'm better than you and I'm not going to tell you how" attitude then we wouldn't have any teachers, no education system and a bunch of people running around in loin cloths, communicating in grunts. It really irritates me how some people think it's funny to appear to be better by making others feel small. Also, isn't sharing knowledge a crucial point of having a forum in the first place? However, I have made my point and now I apologise for the sarcastic way in which it was initially presented. I hope my further explanation goes some way to explaining my position.
So you are happy with your rig. That's good. But if you have to ask about the benefits of a more expensive rig then you won't understand the answer.
Raised an eyebrow at this - a bit on the patronising side, don't you think? Back at you - please, o wise one, educate us. Please enrich us with the benefit of your extensive knowledge and help us rise above the level of simple luddite!

My amp has a contour control which seems to be a progressive mid scoop to mid hump. So I mostly use that and have the 6 band eq set with a preference for low mids.
Would anyone really buy a bass without seeing and handling it?
Yes, me. I am geographically challenged and the vast majority of my basses have been bought on the strength of specs and pics at distance. If you live near a great bass shop or have easily satisfied mainstream tastes then good for you, but we're not all the same.

Once one buys into the whole "let's get Christmas Number One" thing, isn't one just becoming part of the problem - i.e. making "music" to be heavily marketed to sell more in order to prove some kind of superior bollock circumference (or ovary capacity?) instead of for its own sake? I'm just happy to play and am happy that the five people and a dog that showed up had a good time and danced about like idiots. Are my sights set far too low? I sometimes feel like a dick for merely mentioning that I'm in a band.
In need of some good cables myself too. How do I contact OBBM? Tried to do a members search but didn'y have any luck.
http://www.bassic-bits.co.uk/

Purely structural concerns for me. The only cables I've had go bad on me are Planet Waves (one went microphonic, one broke in the sealed jack socket - just chuck 'em in the bin). I still have the first cable I ever bought - a Proel one with Neutrik ends. Apart from that one, it's Rock-Wire/Bassic-Bits/obbm for me all the way nowadays. They are not expensive in the grand scheme of things, but they seem to be strong and of good quality. One cable sounding better than another? Can't say I've ever heard that phenomenon in action. Copper and solder are pretty damn conductive no matter what "oxygen free" wrapping it's encased in. My opinion is that some of the promises made by "expensive" cables are highly subjective and light on actual demonstrable results and as such I refused to be sooked in.

Have a wee video of us destroying a Martin Stephenson song at what can only be described as the most quirky but amazing venue in the NE of Scotland by a country mile (and you have to navigate a few of those to find it!). I would apologise if you prefer the original version of this song but the way I see it if we're going to cover a song then we should make it our own - after all we're musicians, not a photocopiers. What a fantastic gig last night! We were playing in the strangest venue I've ever encountered - The Last Bus Depot - a big shed in the middle of rural Aberdeenshire which you have to go down single lane roads and a farm track to get to. It felt more like a private party than a gig and the atmosphere was amazing. The main depot itself has two double decker buses either side that people can sit in (top deck has roof partially removed) and various other paraphernalia like a Reliant Regal, a Robin and motorbikes plus bus parts, light up full size Esso signs and it was absolutely brilliant. Take a look (they're really wide and will probably mess up the forum, so have a link): http://www.ifb.co.uk/~matthew/pics/Oxbow_live/20120728-lastbus/ Anyway, it was a brilliant gig, despite some power and PA issues at the start we managed to get things going. We went down a storm and rock and roll of rock and roll moments - we managed to trip the circuit breaker once during the set. Drummer and horns just kept playing until we got power back and then we all just came back into play Fantastic crowd, really up for it, some of my family came to see me too which was nice - and the first time my Dad had ever seen the band properly. Afterwards it was up to the cafe for a cup of tea. The place is fabulous - converted railway carriages you can stay in, a hexagonal veggie cafe made from reclaimed electricity poles, just a weird, wacky but extremely welcoming place! I enjoyed myself so much that I would play there any time for free. First run out for my new office bass and the BB300 was amazing! Perhaps all split P pickups should be the "wrong" way round!
I have an old TU-2 gathering dust our rehersal space, can't believe I didn't think of it sooner, D'oh!
Remember that the TU-2 will only mute one of the outputs when you press the pedal. Of course this is moot if you're not going to use it as a tuner.
