I'm pretty happy with my current lot: Epiphone Les Paul (Not So) Standard: Pros: Love the looks, chunky neck, the addition of the selector switch nailed its worst flaw, 3EQ EMGs is about as far removed from the stock pickups as you can go, short of ACG filter pre Cons: It's a little heavy, 3 point bridge sucks Gibson G-3: Pros: Love the looks, medium weight, chunky neck, simple passive bass Cons: A bit beaten up, a three trick pony, some of the grub screws in the bridge are knackered, pearl dots on a maple board are hard to see. G&L Tribute L-2000: Pros: Wonderful flexibility of pickup selections, chunky neck, love the colour, quite simply the closest thing to perfection I have Cons: Perhaps it's a little heavy, but I'm being super critical now. Danelectro Hodad: Pros: Light as a feather, 3 pickups with all options available, a sound all of its own, crazy looks, Cons: Dunno how durable it'll be. Gibson Victory Artist: Too early to tell, I've only had it in one piece for a few hours and only played it for minutes. It won't knock the G&L from the "if you could only keep one bass" slot - it's too damn heavy! Love the looks, neck feels great (especially after the super smooth finish Rich has put on it), should have a decent range of tonal options, fully active/passive (as in the passive mode is bass/treble cut 0-10 and the active modes are bass/treble cut/boost +5/-5) An overall pro point for all of these - they're not Fenders. I mean no offence by that comment, I simply strive to be wilfully different. I have owned a few of the bottom end of Fender's output (Squier P, J and Bronco) and they were usable enough instruments but they just didn't excite or interest me like the ones I have now do.

Not 100% looking forward to road-testing my Gibson Victory Artist, that's all I can say. Hoping that a Comfort or Mono strap will mitigate its considerable weight (at least 11lbs), I'm still young damnit!

Got some bits and bobs which would tart up an existing bass or do a project bass proud. Neck weighing you down? P pickup overpowering your J in your PJ? Set of 4 Hipshot Ultralite tuners - 1/2" (big) posts, elephant ear buttons, satin bodies, chrome buttons, reversible (currently 4 in line right handed) - £60 posted complete with screws Hipshot A-style brass bridge (chrome finish) - a heavy duty bridge with 3 way adjustable saddles, quick top loading or string through. PLEASE NOTE: this will not fit directly on a Fender without modifications - mounts with 4 screws, not 5. Screws included and funny imperial allen key to adjust the saddles. £50 posted. We're kinda snookered with the weather up here at the moment. It's no climate to be spraying basses in, that's for sure. Double bummer, as Rich put up a shed, thinking he could carry on with normal November weather. Yesterday, just to feel like I've done something to move the thing on, I took the protective film off the pickguard and fitted those washers/position indicators. All things being well, this should be good to go when the time comes, save for reattaching the bridge earth wire. Curse you, weather!

For sale is a bass I put together from a body/neck I got from eBay and parts I collected up to put this together. This is the only pic I have to hand, but I'll get some better ones up (and hopefully some soundclips) soon: The skinny: Body: Unknown woods - nice bookmatched top on a lighter, plain wood. Shellac (french polish) finish. Neck: 20 fret maple/rosewood, P width. Shellac (french polish) finish. Hardware: Hipshot: Ultralite tuners, string retainer, A-style bridge (string through or top load) Neck pickup: Seymour Duncan Alnico MM Bridge pickup: Seymour Duncan Quarter Pound Jazz EQ: Artec SE-2 2 band EQ Controls: Volume, Treble, Bass, Blend, series/single/parallel switch for MM pickup Things you should know: Whoever had it before me thought it would be a right good idea to glue the neck in, even though it's a bolt on. No shims for you then. There are several holes in the back of the headstock where various tuners have been installed. I put this together before I even knew what I really wanted from a bass and as such I rarely play it these days. I am feeling a little skint, so I can't afford to be sentimental about it, despite my wife's warnings that I'll regret selling it. If it doesn't sell then I'll be breaking it up for parts, but if you want to save it from that fate (or at least save me from doing the breaking up - what you do with it after you buy it is none of my business ) then I'd like £200 all in for this. While CBS arguably dropped the ball a bit in terms of quality control, this pre-EB and pre-BBE nonsense is just bandwagon jumping ridiculousness perpetrated by people wishing to see an artificial inflation of prices based upon something completely arbitrary (being the ownership of a company) and trying to make out that their older instrument is somehow superior because of this. The value of "pre-Volkswagen" Skodas must be going through the roof by that logic. They just don't make 'em like they used to. -
With the help of Rich I got the correct pot fitted and the licorice allsort knob back on. The 1Meg tone pot is an unusual choice, it's basically on/off, the only appreciable differences happen in the last quarter of travel. Oh well, that's what it's supposed to be, I might experiment with other caps and/or resistors to see if I can improve things. I said I'd do some sound clips, so here they are. Usual apologies for the standard of playing and the boringness of the content. I'm not going to blow smoke up you and tell you this bass can ape a Precision or a Jazz or a whatever, I get really tired of all these proclamations. Listen and judge for yourself. If I remember correctly, OLPs are VVT - there's a volume control for each coil in the humbucker and a single tone control.

The lightest bass I have in my current arsenal is the Danelectro Hodad. Any Danelectro will be light - they're masonite (hardboard) top and back on a plywood frame A surprisingly light bass from my past was the Traben Chaos. I had the Attack version.
