I'm pretty slow with this fretting business. I've done 10 frets tonight in an hour and a half and I got bored and went home from the workshop. Which brings me to my next question - what on earth do people use to cut fret ends down to size? They're bloody hard. I've been using the Dremel to cut them but even it takes its sweet time to cut through, and I don't fancy a spinning wheel of death next to my fingerboard.

On brand new pots, I rough up the area where I'm going to solder first, I think I read somewhere that helps. As long as the solder has taken to the casing and the wire's in the solder then it should be fine.

Actually got off my butt and got some work done on this: - Ground down the nippers and removed the frankly pathetically installed old frets - Hammered in my first fret - Started to make the template for the pickup/ramp routing

Is there any reason why this wouldn't work?[/quote] Nothing's impossible, but bear in mind that QPs are passive, EMGs (I presume you're meaning EMG J or JV and not HZ) are active. Which means that you need 250-500k pots for the passive pup and 25k pots for the active ones. Not to mention remembering not to fire +9V through your QPs by mistake.

I had a problem with mine - I think a cap went potty and burned out a resistor in the power rectification stage for the valve preamp. Replaced the caps and the resistor and it's been great ever since. Obviously a total showstopper has to be traced from the power lead backwards. The attached file might help.

It depends. I've just invested in EMG pickups and EQ for my Les Paul so I had better bloody like it active! But seriously, the original passive circuitry had very little tonal range and was mostly thick humbucker sounds. This bass has become my workhorse and I simply wanted the sound to be brighter. I went 3 band EQ so that I can have a degree of mid scoop regardless of what I'm plugged into. So far in 3 venues out of 3 I've been DIed into the PA, so the more control I have before that happens, the better I like it. Having said that, I resisted advice to put some sort of preamp into my Bronco. It just seemed wrong - it already has a sweet tone, it's just a bit quiet. Well, that's what amps are for. So, like I said - it depends.
