1. I used lighter fluid to clean up the manky fingerboard of the old Hagstrom: Left: before, right: after
2. For sale I have an EMG pickup - a 40P5. This pickup is unused (pickup still in shrink wrap), in original packaging, and complete with all parts (screws, pots, jack socket, battery clip, wads of foam and wiring diagram). The only down side is it's an older EMG without Quik-connect - the wires just come directly out of the bottom of the pickup. Bumf from EMG site: "The 40P5 design has two offset coils that result in more low end with brilliant highs. It is intended for 5-string models that have a standard string spacing and uses short, squat coils that have very little resistance and plenty of inductance. Ceramic magnets are used to add clarity. The 40P5 has a natural presence, powerful lows, punchy midrange, and superior definition. This pickup uses a 40 Extended housing that is 4 inches (102mm)." Piccies, dimensions etc. here: http://www.emginc.com/displayproducts.asp?...p;catalogid=118 Because EMG like to bury such useful information inside their whole catalogue only, max string spacing is 3.125". Remember though, it's not Quik-connect, it is hard wired. I'd like £50 + postage for it. PM me up before you go-go.
3. Oh, and another small idea I think I mentioned a while back but never happened - a seperate forum in the For Sale section for bass/guitar/amp spare parts. I think there's enough trade in these things to warrant the unique place.
4. Well, unfortunately the answers is "it depends" Budget is one, you've stated you don't want to spend "huge amounts", but one man's "huge amount" is another's small potatoes. A figure would help give you proper advice.
5. Welcome to the forum
6. You see from time to time (including in previous incarnations of this very thread) how people would like to see the wiki expanded/made more useful. The wiki only works if people contribute to it. Therein lies a problem - I have anecdotal evidence of people having problems with submitting stuff to the wiki (or simply not knowing how to do it). How about nominating someone officially to look after the wiki, either an existing mod or someone new? People with stuff to submit but aren't sure how to do it (it's not the most intuitive thing in the world if you're not used to tag based markup) could supply the text/pics to this person and they could wiki-ify it for them. Would have added benefit of someone patrolling from time to time keeping the wiki neat and tidy, conforming to a consistent style etc. Just an idea

9.
Afternoon all struggling to get to grips with my new router - is a small router table a worthwhile investment? ttfn
To be honest, I'm getting along fine with a Workmate and clamps. Using a combination of templates, straight edge guides, roller bits and guide bushes. If only mine had a greater plunge depth - I have to borrow my dad's to use roller bits (with the roller at the top of the cutter).
10.
Blimey that was quick! Cheers mate Does it make any difference that the setup was working fine when I played yesterday? Can it literally just go overnight or would I notice a drop off?
Depends on the bass - I don't have an extensive knowledge of many active circuits but I'm guessing some will exhibit some distortion/drop off as the battery fades, whereas some will operate fine until the voltage/current supplied by the battery falls below a threshold and it will simply stop working. Perhaps someone with more knowledge will come along and confirm/contradict.
11. Certainly try changing the battery - you'll need one eventually even if that isn't the problem this time A dead battery in an active bass can cause a lack of output.
12.
Spare jack sockets can be a right pain to find, not to mention cost a lot. One or two of my jack-socket-equipped devices have had plain ordinary jack sockets as replacements for the originals, with short flying leads to the PCB, although sometimes that's not possible.
I've had good experience with the UK distributors of Hartke gear in getting spare parts - they even sent me a replacement knob for nothing! Try 'em and see what they say: Sound Technology http://www.soundtech.co.uk/
13.
Just remember that only one or possibly two people in the room will notice if you mess up little bits and pieces here and there whereas a large amount of the audience will appreciate you looking at them and smiling as if you are enjoying yourself ...
I don't think I looked like I was enjoying myself at all, I don't really know what I was feeling to be honest Oh well, onwards and upwards.
14. On the flip side... I had my first gig a month ago and I'm afraid to say I had to peruse my notes in between every song, and spent most of the time in Quasimodo pose - ie. hunched over my bass staring intently at the fingerboard. To be fair I had only 3 rehearsals with the band prior to the gig. Perhaps in time I'll loosen up. It would be nice to be able to acknowledge that there's an audience
15. It won't be Aberdeenshire - nothing ever happens up here now that all the scammers have moved to Orkney.

Hi

Welcome to the forum
17. FYI there is an Items Wanted forum a bit further down the page. It'll be cheaper to get an SX across the pond than it will be to get a UK luthier to build you one and that's a simple fact. http://www.rondomusic.com
18. A blow torch and some judicious hammer blows?
19. IN MY HUMBLE DRUNK OPINION There isn't anything good about old basses. Good players can do something decent with a poor bass, a poor player can't do something decent with any bass - vintage or otherwise. Mojo is a myth, scratches, gouges and dings are real and a source of much pain to me. Mojoed cars of course sell for such premium prices. Relicing is a joke. Crazy people. May your basses stay shiny and pristine.

21. Not pushing my buttons, sorry.
22.
I hope it's chambered or something. Zebrano weighs a ton. Good tone, though!
It's only the wings which are zebrano, it will be heavier than a regular mahogany thunderbird but I don't think by enough to warrant chambering. Might actually help it balance better with the body being a bit heavier
