1. I'm too cynical for eBay. I'm also clearly too honest.
2.
I had a guy buy my amp from me today and he brought along his friends bass to try it out. It was a 1961 Gibson EB O,but some numbskull had decided to spray it white 30 years ago! It very good condition otherwise Of course it's just the single pick up, but how much would it have been worth had it been left it's original colour?(the red was beginning to show through atr the headstock where the serial number is. The guy said his friend would sell it to him (and him alone...)for about £100! A pretty poor bass by todays standards that has clearly lost tons of value due to the white paint job, but still....£100 for a '61 Gibson?
Take it. With a more authentic cherry red refinishing job, it's easily worth more than that. The fact of the matter is that people go nuts for vintage instruments. Just make sure the serial number doesn't get damaged in the refin. Grr, these are the kind of deals I dream about! Where's my 1961 Gibson for £100?!?
3. Your chances of consensus on this are slim at best - everyone's got their own opinion on this.
4. I've acquired a couple of things from this forum, so it's time for a little payback. On offer is a 6 string chrome bass bridge. In good condition, no marks or blemishes. Comes with mounting screws and allen key for adjusting saddle height. Mounts with 7 screws. Strings go through the back of the bass, no holes for through body stringing. Approximate measurements Base plate: 99 x 56mm String spacing: 16mm It's nothing special, but if someone's got a use for it then they're welcome to it.
5. A quick browse of the tutor forum on here tells me that £35 is a tad expensive - £30 was the dearest I saw.
6.
Not sure the 5 string pickup would be such a problem. This bass, hand built by Leo Fender and now owned by Sterling Ball aparrently works fine: However I do agree this 5 to 4 string project is too much work and shouldn't be done with such a nice, not to mention expensive bass. I would recommend buying a Musicman SUB, putting in SR5 style contours and refinishing it. Or just find a bass you love and leave it as is.
I'd recommend an OLP/other budget copy body if you're going into butchery mode to be honest. I understand where the OP is coming from, I much prefer the look of SR5s over SR4s. Just don't like that isolated pickguard/chrome control plate combo.
7. Yes, but it depends upon the wood. There seems little point in having a natural finish over something with very little figure like basswood etc. but why would anyone spray a solid colour over zebrano?
8.
Only just noticed this, very impressive stuff! Consider me subscribed! Also, how did you get rid of the 'hump' around the decal on the headstock? Cheers, Tom
I didn't entirely, the idea was basically to spray layer after layer on top of the whole thing then cut back over the decal. I got it down a little then I chickened out (Hagstrom decals not being that easy to obtain ). So there is a little hump, but it isn't as bad as it was. The originals used to get quite pronounced edges to them anyway, so I guess I'm being period correct through the back door. That's my story and I'm sticking to it...
9. People are free to do what they want. I've been "let down" on deals before. Until the goods and money have swapped, the seller or the buyer can duck out. Annoying perhaps, but life goes on.
10.
As much as I admire the morals of those who wish to warn potential buyers and as much as it makes my blood boil to see cleverly worded auctions like this, we are not the eBay police and if someone wishes to pay a stupid amount of money for a piece of firewood without doing their homework first (like a visit to basschat) then so be it.....Caveat emptor
Reading what you've said and paraphrasing it in the meanest way for effect yields "I've got the knowledge but you don't, so your only option is to learn the hard way." I think not. I'm of the opinion that if I can help and it doesn't put me unreasonably and involuntarily out of my way then I'll help. It takes a few minutes of an evening to bash out a counterfeit report on eBay, message a seller telling them of the error in their ways or to warn a seller after the auction ends that they may well have purchased a lemon. Turning a blind eye and scoffing is not the way forward. If I can try to stop someone getting ripped off and some oh-so-clever miscreant making a killing at someone else's expense then I will. I have less sympathy for people who do not research what they are selling and end up getting less than the item might be worth. Caveat venditor!
11. It is worth reporting, it is listed as "FENDER JAZZ BASS", which it patently isn't. The "SPARES OR REPAIR" bit is irrelevant. I've reported it, and everyone else can pitch in too, at least we have some time to act.
12. Quick update: obtained some grain filler so I can finally get started on the body refinish. I have no idea if the grain needs filling or not (because I have no idea what wood the body is made of), but I'm not taking any chances. I'm guessing that if filler isn't needed then the stuff just won't sink in to the grain that much. Better than screwing a stick to the body, I've got an old, badly varnished Hagstrom neck that I can use. I'll mask the fingerboard, but it doesn't matter too much if lacquer gets on the back, it needs stripped anyway. I'll be able to hang it from one of the tuner holes too when drying - bonus
13.
doesnt help me work out where to rout one hole to put it!!!
Indeed it doesn't, but it would be well cool I have an OLP MM3 at home if you want me to measure that, but I wouldn't take it as gospel, compared to a proper EB MM.
14. Rig up a fancy sliding pickup then put it where you like
15. Welcome to the forum I visited Cyprus for the first time a few weeks ago, I really enjoyed it. I think I'll be back.
16.
Rule of thumb: Any second chance offer is a fraud, and so is anything involving Western Union. What more do you need to know?
Not so. Legitimate second chance offers come to you through eBay and you checkout and pay for them the usual way. I've successfully bought items with a second chance offer, I won one but didn't quite trigger the reserve but the guy agreed to sell it for my best bid. +1 for the Western Union though.
17.
Hi there, Im trying to upgrade my beautiful Toby pro 5 string with EMG 40DC and an AGGIE OBP3 pre. I m just not sure about the magnet spacing and stuff. Any help anyone?
EMG 40DC use blade magnets, so can accomodate any spacing up to the maximum string spread which for 40DC is 3.25" (taken from the catalogue available at www.emginc.com)
18. No, it was my other sister. Oh and to further delay things, I was in hospital last week for a minor surgical procedure. Everything's fine though, looking forward to getting my projects back on track.
19. Alternatively, http://myworld.ebay.com/plankspanker101 Has done custom work for me in the past, I was impressed with the results.
20. Welcome to the forum I've never played a Yamaha, but I haven't heard any bad stuff said about them so you're probably safe enough. Until the GAS kicks in
21. Welcome to the forum
22. This has been on sale for over a year. I offered the guy a hundred for it but he never replied
