1. People here seem to like Wizard pickups (Thumper?), I'm quite fond of Seymour Duncan pickups (got a Quarter Pounder in my Fecker Imprecision - a Squier Affinity in disguise).
2.
At the moment undecided whether to leave au naturel or block-colour spray finish (foam green?).
It's not a particularly featured bit of wood, I'd probably spray it a solid colour if it was me.

hello

Welcome to the forum
5. Welcome to the forum. As I said in my previous welcoming post, a Squier can - with some tweaking - be a fine, usable instrument.

Welcome to the forum. Au contraire - with some tweaking, a Squier can be a most serviceable instrument.
7. Not really. However, progress continues: You can see the hump caused by the logo. A few more layers then I'll have a go at levelling it somewhat.
8. For such a small scale fix, I'd try cocktail sticks and wood glue in the hole. Wait overnight to dry then screw in. That'll give the screws something to grip.
9. Wheeee, lacquer drying is fun. Hello from the workshop. I'm going to try and get 4 layers done this evening. At least I can get some bass practice in while I'm waiting. Got to love the Tascam MP3 bass trainer.
10.
You mean something like this Link to hideous bright green bass guitar
No I mean more like this:
11. Is that budget total - ie: do you need to factor an amp into that as well?
12. I have a bass (my Fecker Imprecision Bass) which is made from a Squier Affinity P bass body and neck I had lying around. I put some Fender Mex tuners I had lying around on it (had to ream out the holes), a Badass II bridge and a Seymour Duncan Quarter Pounder pickup and redid the electronics with CTS pots and an orange drop capacitor. Probably spent no more than £200 on it. Time, as an amateur hobbyist, is not factored in. I can't comment on how it was when it was a complete Squier but what I have now is a very playable bass. I let my guitarist mate (who used to play bass and still has a rather lovely Tokai Hard Puncher in his collection which I covet occasionally) have a go and he was impressed with how well it played. All it needs now is a body refinish - some of the original silver was lifted clean off by the previous owner removing a sticker and there's numerous dings and bumps in it. I'm thinking about going for something hideous like Surf Green - so bad it's good. I guess what I'm trying to say is that there's nothing wrong with the basic construction of a Squier, just the hardware could do with upgrading. Remember that any maker, any country, any time can make a "Friday afternoon special". If it feels good, then it is good.
13. Welcome to the forum. I snorted at "Jesus-points"
14. They're bound to catch someone out who doesn't take the time to read properly.
15.
It's going to look good when it's done, what pups are you using?
EMGs - a 40J at the bridge and I'm deciding between a 40P5 oe a 40DC at the neck. EMG BTC system 2 band EQ.
16. Cheers guys. I got the idea for the matching zebrano headstock from Warwick: With the black Gotoh tuners, mine will look quite similar to this, but I might cut out the shape of the truss rod cover out of the veneer and use the cutout to make an "invisible" cover.
17. Generally, the denser the wood the greater the sustain and the heavier the guitar. Like my acrylic bass. Very dense material, heavy as a concrete block and you can pluck a note, go make a cup of tea, come back and it'll still be audible - slight exaggeration but you get the point. More subjective is the "warmth" or "brightness" of the sound. Softer wood = warmer tone, harder wood = brighter tone. Or something. Like I said - subjective. Actually, it's all pretty subjective, open to debate and I reserve the right to be right. Or wrong. I'll get my coat.
18. Small update: I've ground a Tusq nut blank to fit in the nut slot, drilled/filled the neck screw holes and the truss rod cover screws and cut a piece of zebrano veneer for the face of the headstock.
19.
I am endeavouring to get my money back. And I'm just kicking myself that I paid instantly for it instead of waiting a couple of minutes to read the emails from you guys. There were lots of checks I should have done before buying the bloody thing! My concern with this case is that the guy who is selling it is rather stupid. So this will only add to the frustration in dealing with it. As I've already paid for the item I've just got to check what my rights are as a buyer to then return the goods. I've asked for a refund now to save him all the hassle before he sends it but we'll just have to see what happens. Cheers for the help though!
The cynic in me says that he isn't stupid at all.
20. ahh, brings me back to my youth - sellotaping wires together.
21.
I have a CIJ Precision neck and the serial number is on the heel, just outside the pocket so it's visible when the body is fitted.
Yeah, but you don't have to remove the neck to see it, do you? That's the part that stinks.
22.
Hi there so I'm the dope who just bought this bass off mister fenderred. think i got a tad hot headed Good news is that he contacted me back with a 'serial number' and said he would refund me if I didn't want it. Just wanted to see what you thought of the plausibility of this serial number explanation. He says that the serial at the bottom of the neck, once he has taken it off the body (not on the headstock) is MN621011 This does equate with a Mexican 96-97. Maybe it is just a mexican neck on a squier body... The Jazz ashtrays do look suspicious but they could easily have been put on later.. Are there any other checks I could request?? Did 96/97 Mexican Precisions have the serial on the back of the headstock? Hope you can help Cheers
As far as I'm aware, no Fenders have ever had their serial numbers at the bottom of the neck, only a production date if anything. I'm pretty sure Mex Fenders had their serial numbers printed on the front of the headstock, under the logo. I'm sure a Fenderhead will be along shortly to clarify this.
