Is the headstock decal right for that bass? I thought they had "Precision bass" in small under the Fender logo?
Depends which year they're reissuing, that's a late 60s/early 70s reissue by the looks of things. Fender Japan did a 1970 reissue, didn't they?

I find that very difficult to believe. The story or the price.
I can appreciate you'd be annoyed but you'll be wasting valuable time and effort trying to report him. What can you report him for? If you claim that he was trying to do a deal off eBay he could reciprocate saying that you made the approach and were trying to make an offer of eBay... you could end up in the cacky! I'm not saying you are wrong but it will likely as not be a fruitless exercise.
Reporting blatant ripoff auctions to eBay is frequently a waste of time so I don't suppose they'd do much about this. I did word my response very carefully saying that I was not willing to do business outwith eBay and that he should relist, so I think I'm clean in this respect. They might take a dim view of my "it's a bass neck not a ming vase" retort though

Hmph Had my eye on a bass neck in the states. Before I have placed a bid, guy pulls the auction - supposedly because of an incorrect starting value. But it never re-appears, so I message him asking if he's relisting it. I get messaged back asking me what my offer is. I told him that I wasn't impressed and that if he wanted to do business with me, he ought to relist. I did hint at a value I'd be prepared to pay that he might want to list it at. He doesn't get back to me, so I tell him I'm not being held to ransom. He messages back to say that he's had an offer above what I said. Bull. I think I'll report this, it ain't right. How the guy has racked up 700+ feedback (100% positive) is beyond me.
I'm feeling a stirring of interest in an Artec. One question - do they come with knobs (they don't seem to)? If not (er, two questions), does anyone know any suppliers of reasonable cheap metal knobs to suit them?
No knobs. They use split shaft knobs for single pots and concentric pots are solid shaft (by design/necessity anyway?). Axesrus are good for random little things, and no postage. Looking to sell a set of Fender 3 bolt neck gubbins. Brand new, unused. Unfortunately, the neckplate is for a guitar, but all the rest of the stuff can be used in a bass, according to the basspartsresource stock codes for these bits anyway. Speaking of such things, this lot would cost you around $40 + postage + taxes from the states, so let's say £15 + postage. Might be willing to send the stuff minus the plate for £10 + postage.

Up for sale is a 4 string Washburn Mercury Series bass neck. Maple/rosewood Dot markers, top aligned 34" scale 24 frets Angled back headstock ~14mm tuner holes 39mm nut width ~60mm width at fret 24 A couple of scuffs here and there, mostly in the black front of the headstock. No doubt the project bass builder will be looking to sand that off and refinish anyway. Looking for £20 + postage. Paypal accepted.
That looks great .. I've just got an Artec SE2A for my Project SX P bass. No room for the battery so I need to fit a rear battery box. Is it hard to do with a basic hand router?
Virtually foolproof if you make a template first. It's all in the template. Get a piece of MDF most of the size of the body. The trick is to make sure that you've got template material over the neck pocket and the control cavity for easy clamping points that won't mar the finish in any way. Measure your battery box. Now comes the maths. Decide what router bit you're using. Needs to be deep (I used a 50mm deep cutter) and you're unlikely to get one thinner than 12mm at that length. Most routers come with a guide bush that screws into the router base. It's usually 30mm wide. Assuming you use these figures (12mm cutter, 30mm guide bush), then you'll need to make your template 9mm bigger all round (from the centre of the cutter, the bush is 15mm away and half the cutter's diameter is 6mm, so 15-6 = 9mm difference). Cut out your template. I use the router to do this too. Measure from the extremity of the cutter you're using to the flat edge of the base plate. Clamp a straight edge the required distance away from your template hole and use this to guide the router along the edge of the hole, one side at a time. Do a test first! Fit the guide bush to the router. Clamp the template to some scrap wood block and do a test rout. Let the guide bush ride along the edge of the template. Check that your battery box will fit. Also, don't strain the router or the bit by trying to be a hero and doing the hole all in one. I do it in 10mm steps using the depth gauge on the router. For a battery box like the one above, you have to go down about 33mm if memory serves, the side on boxes are shallower, but require a bigger template. Your other option is to make the template the exact size you need and use a router bit with a roller guide at the top of the cutter. The roller will follow the edge of the guide. As you plunge further down the roller will follow the hole itself. Practice makes perfect. I remember the first rout I did took hours, I was so nervous.
aren't the Musicmaster machineheads non-standard? I'm pretty sure you can't get a Hipshot detuner in the exact style of the ones on the bass in the bass porn forum.
Depends on the age. Later ones used normal fender branded 1/2" post tuners. Ha, I just got rid of one of those sets of drinking chess on freecycle - someone gave me it years ago and I never used it. Got a taker within 15 minutes. Sounds about right for Aberdeen. Never saw the point in it personally - chess is a thinking game of skill, strategy and judgement - you can't play it drunk.

Very Gibson-esque cherry red finish - very nice indeed
Hey how do those Artec SE2A sound? I'm really tempted to buy one for a project I putting together.
Pretty good range of sounds available, depending of course on what kind of pickups you're using. I used an Artec SE-2 in my first self build in conjunction with an MM humbucker and a Jazz single coil. That can do anything from mud to twang. I'll try and put some sound clips together.
Very neat job. Where did you get your Artec and the stacked pot from?
Thanks for the kind words. I got my Artec from an eBay seller in Singapore, and the knob came from axesrus. Edit: I misread you - the stacked pot comes with the SE-2A - it's attached to a small circuit board. Also you can get Artec gear from Thomann.

I thought I caught a glimpse of the 3 pickups of a G3... http://www.gibsonbass.com/grabberG3.php

You may recall a while ago that I added a string hold down bar to my OLP MM3. Well, it pinged out under the stress of the strings. Oops. Never mind, it spurred me on to make more improvements! 1. Accursed break angle at the nut, remixed: got myself a Hipshot 3 string retainer. Covered up the mess left by the failed string hold down bar. Looks really neat too 2. Active 2 band EQ: Hated the standard wiring (2 volume (1 for each coil of the humbucker) and 1 passive tone) so installed an Artec SE-2A. New config: 1 blend pot (all rear coil > both full > all front coil), master volume, stacked treble/bass. 3. Battery box: for testing I found a space underneath the pickguard and wedged the battery in with foam, but for the permanent fixture I had to get the router out. It's a much more useful instrument now. Incidentally, I discovered that OLP used linear pots for that wonderful "all or nothing" feel. Joy.

OK, done. I'm not going to make any more changes to it right now. If you have spotted something that needs improving, go into the wiki and change it yourself. That's the whole point of it being a wiki!
I take it you're referring to this bit: I believe it should read:
Doh, cheers for that. At some point in the calculation, I made the shipping costs disappear. If only I could perform that trick outside a wiki article
Also, VAT is charged on goods and shipping. Import duty is only charged on the goods.

Customs duty - this is usually charged as a percentage of the value. The percentage varies depending on the type of goods and their country of origin. Duty is charged on the price paid for the goods including any local sales taxes plus postage, packing and insurance costs. However, postage is excluded from the calculation for duty on gifts sent by post except for Express Mail Service (EMS).
Reading that, what you say is only true if it's a gift (and not sent EMS). Am I reading it wrong?
