Pile o' sh!te last night. Played with Nine Lives last night at the Balaclava in Fraserburgh. First half was dire - about 10 folk in the bar and absolutely none of them gave a flying f hole if we were there or not - in fact they would have prefered we weren't there as they got one of the bar staff to come over and tell us that we were a bit loud and they couldn't talk at the bar - cheeky bar stewards! I was quite hacked off by that, angry enough that at half time I postulated to the rest of the band that we offer to end it now and take half pay. The drummer sorta half agreed with me but the other two wanted to carry on and see if things improve. Thankfully, some extra folk came in during the break who were actually up for a boogie and improved things immeasurably and I ended up having an OK night, but it was very much a case of the second half cancelling out the first. Hey ho, got paid, packed up, went home. Gear - Squier Affinity Jaguar H then Yamaha BB1200 into the usual Markbass tone cubes.

Thomann (non) update - they're still chewing it over and it's been passed over to their technical department for their 2c on the matter. I really hope I get to keep it now - wanna see what the LPB looks like with the dark fingerboard but daren't do the swap until this has all been resolved.

They're all like that - the only ones which aren't are the lower rings of the concentrics. Not a fan. I swapped mine out for some chrome John Easts.

Those batteries look skanky as hell. I have the same type in my Z7 but they arrived fine - I know because I removed them to see if the passive mode worked even if the batteries were out. I'd be very concerned that those batteries have leaked. The cases do not look too clever.

So, a LPB Jaguar H became available. So I snagged it. Now I'm less bothered about keeping the charcoal one, but if I do get to keep it it's going to be a fun time swapping bits and bobs! No reply from Thomann today - whether that's a good sign (request gone "upstairs") or not (they're ignoring me and hoping I just give up)...

While it can have overtones of permission/approval, it can simply mean "doesn't give me a hard time about". From the context of the rest of the post, I'm leaning towards the latter, rather than the former.

I haven't even got as far as that - so far they're reluctant to even consider the course of action, never mind the nitty gritty of the numbers. They replied today to my "was it even considered?" question with "This option was considered, but since the damage was quite severe and may continue to cause problems, we prefer to proceed this way." I've argued back at them that I know what I'm doing, the damage is 100% cosmetic and I'm happy to waive the warranty (if that's what they're worried about), so we'll see what they say. I'm not going to argue the toss with them much longer - there's nothing I can do about it if they stick to their guns. And here was me thinking that it was what the customer prefered that mattered the most...

Well, to answer your questions the neck is lovely, satin finish on the back, I whizz around on it quite happily. Positions is an interesting question. I fitted a Freeway 10-way switch to give me more options (like combining pickups in series, using the first and third together etc.). My favourite positions are neck pickup only, neck and middle in series, and middle and bridge in series. Note that the second two are only available by modding - the stock five way switch is wired exactly like a Strat - N, N+M, M, M+B, B - all parallel. I am not renowned for my liking of the bridge pickups, but the bridge pickup on the Triad is one of the few that have impressed me.

Is that an open question to the entire Triad crew?

Further update - a (useful) spanner in the works has appeared from nowhere. Don't wanna jinx it. More news later in the week...

Update - Thomann have gone straight to return for full refund. Have asked them if they had considered my initial request for a discount. Waiting to hear back.

My guess is that they cut through many layers of BS to just get nice instruments made and in the hands of people at reasonable prices. The insolent upstart market disruptors that they are!
