Could I have some advice re nice settings on the DBX 266. First off, is connected in the FX loop of my TE amp. I use the gate section to keep things a little quieter, Im OK with the settings there. Its just the compressor side of things. Im after a nice "bouncy" compressed sound just to keep things tidy and enhance the already fat mid sound that TEs give. Ive read the book and Im just confused. I tiddle with the controls and get in a mess. Any help would be nice. I know that "a good sound" is subjective, but.............. I use passive Ps and Js.

Thinking about writing a John Entwistle Book...
neilb replied to Stuart Clayton's topic in General Discussion
Like most people, I sat for years listening to The Real Me thinking I would love to be able to play it live. Now I can, about 98% accurate. Its a crowd stirrer and I really get off playing it (not in a sexual way, you understand). JE never played it the same live anyway, always improvising on the main theme around C maj. Any book on the great man would be on my shelf in minutes. Good luck Stu. -
I have an autographer Fender Jazz Scratch plate. I met Rory Macdonald of Runrig after a show, and he autographer two of my scratch plates. However, I was told to use hair spray to seal one ofthem, but it destroyed the signatures. I have another one though, but I don;t know how best to go about covering this one? I have perspex, but nobody seems able to cut perspex pprecisely enough to go round the exact shape of the pickguard and slot over the top of the pickups etc. Any advice is appreciated.
I dint think there would be another Runrig fan on this forum! Ive met Rory several times along with the band and he has always been very approachable and gives his time freely. Hes a Stingray man if I recall, in Teal Green. Calum is a gent too and Ian is just mad. Anyway, try a 3m aerosol sealant spray. may need several coats. Also, try a clear vinyl self adhesive film, bit like th film you take off a new plate.
I sold my AH 300 head when I bought my MB SA450. I've now bought a Mark V AH250 which weighs about 5 times as much as the MB but knocks it into a cocked hat when it comes to grunt. Still got the MB and will take it out again soon to recompare, but I love the Trace.
Stick with the TE, you know you want to!!!

Im notorious on here for my obsession with JAE blah blah blah................ BUT, I do agree with andy67 on this one. I have the DVD from which this is taken. His playing overall in the concert is fantastic, but the "camera on the stock" solo in 5:15 was dire. It showed none of his old dexterity or scale work. his tone towards the end of his life got worse, he had it like that to hear himself. To see him at his best, seek out the bass solo (at 4min 14secs) Amazing Journey (Tommy Live in 1989), http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gaaBal2aR4k and 70s stuff or his bass work on the Who song Dreaming From the Waist.

Would a Gotoh 201 require a neck shim?
neilb replied to Jono Bolton's topic in Repairs and Technical
I fitted a 201 to an old SX some time ago and noticed the same, the action would go as low as the old bridge. I didnt shim the neck, just used some old Trace strings that didnt have the windings that go to the ball end, just the string core goes over the bridge. That lowered the action enough. Sold the SX on, so now longer a problem. -
Er... I always though he overplayed. We do My Generation as a cover. Sounds a lot better when you take all the noodling out in the verses. :ducks for cover:
We do The Real Me...... and the "noodling" makes the song. Anyhoo.... When your guitarist is sh*te at lead playing (as PT was), he needed to overplay to provide melody and variation. I fully accept that Player of the Millenium was typical magasine speak and totally OTT. I cant believe I am about to say this, but JE was perfect for The Who, his style and sound was crucial in making those classic records, BUT, he was lost in any other band, If you here him "guesting" with other bands, I must admit it sounds out of place. A band had to fit round John, not the other way round. That does not make him over rated though, just inflexible I suppose. For flexibility, I suppose players like Nathan East (Clapton, Collins, Bocelli) must get the hats tipped.
