I always used to go for the textbook 'keep it the same height as where it falls naturally in your lap sitting down' but I found that it was slightly high doing that and lowering it a smidge was more comfy. This means when I'm sitting noodling at home the strap doesn't support it at all but that doesn't seem a big problem, I often play one of my others sat down with no strap on at all.

My US Jazz came with a shaped hard case which I much prefer over the unwieldy rectangular ones. I'm pretty sure it's an SKB and seems very well put together, no complaints at all except the interior 'ribbon' hinges have come loose but that's no big deal for me.

I can understand why they wouldn't become regulars, maybe look in occasionally as a guest or look at it on someone else's computer but not get directly involved. Irrespective of all the squabbling, to the really well known players it's a job and has been for many years. Do all of us with regular day jobs go home and then log on to user forums so directly related to what we do every day for a living? Not me.

Yep, whatever their faults and the parent company's reluctance to address them I do know that whenever I take mine to a jam session others players are queuing up to play it. In some cases it was the bass they always wanted but couldn't afford and they get quite misty eyed just strapping the thing on.

About time Gilbert bought himself some decent in ear monitors though

That Hastings Riverside Company thing looks like a support group for people with incurable 'jazz hands'
I think that is a bunch of the point, since it is based on exactly that.
Yes I sort of thought that even as I was typing it, at least the BS basses seem to be fairly accurate repro's of the originals and at least the artist has had some involvement. Still an unjustifiable price tag (along with many other mass produced instruments I guess).

They still look like something someone's been knocking together in a garage on Sunday afternoons. Sorry Billy boy, won't be placing an order.

You mean the version like the live one that's on Strangers In The Night i expect. I used to do this in an old band years ago and i think we got somewhere close, it was trickier than we first thought and does mean running down from the dusty end. I'll check when i get near a bass and check the notes we used to put in (if someone doesn't beat me to it, it'll probably be tomorrow). -
Thanks, everyone. Now I just need to find one to play...
If you're ever in Nottingham on a Sunday let me know, if you come along to a jam session that happens every Sunday near me you could get up with some people and play my ric. I don't take it every week so I'd need to know in advance.

Get a half decent second hand one at a sensible price and should you decide it's not for you you are unlikely to make much of a loss on it on resale. Wouldn't buy a new one, overpriced for what they are. I got mine around 2001 or 2002 and paid about £800 for it, it was manufactured in 2000 and had never been gigged, immaculate condition (it has one or two minor road scars now). I thought i'd paid over the odds for it but now I expect If i waited until the market was right I would most of my money back after nearly 10 yrs of ownership. You'd be unlikely to get that on a car unless it was some vintage classic.

I'll just wait until next year when the BC for sale section gets flooded with them and remind you what you paid for them Of course you'll all want more money due to the 'extensive mods' you'll have carried out!
John is a top guy and has a sharp eye for snide guitars, he would never knowingly buy then sell a shifty item. Anyway, lovely bass. I would rip the Badass off ( a no go on Jazz basses IMO) and stick some covers on it!!
This'll make you go all queasy then...

A couple of Johns for ya; Glascock McCoy
my sharona i could play along to the record no problem but when we tried to play it as a band it always went tits up
Try playing My Sharona whilst listening to Whip It (Devo) at the same time. It'll do your head in
Exactly the same experience with Holiday - Green Day are a very deceptive band. Their stuff sounds so easy, but getting the exact feel is a lot more difficult than it sounds.
I was asked to cover Basket Case and American Idiot for a lad at a jam session and picked those up easily enough. I was noodling around at home and thought I'd have a go at Holiday just to see if the same lad might want a crack at that. Totally different experience, took me about 2 full nights of 'shedding' to get it reasonably right - and I've never been asked to play it for real! I started another thread about When I Come Around (as I've now been asked to cover that for someone else at the same jam session). That one's proving a bit tricky as well.

Cheers guys, I think it's just that I haven't played at all for the last 2 weeks and then to jump in on this one was probably a bit optimistic. It's only for a jam session so as long as it's vaguely right it'll be OK. I quite fancy having a go at Cat Steven's Wild World as a contrast!
-
Anyone play this regularly in their set? Been asked to look at it for a jam but strugling wth it at speed. Any tricks to make it easier? Is it better to start the riff on the D string (4th fret) or A string (9th fret)? I always seem to struggle with the really repetitive ones!

The Antigua finish doesn't look so bad if it stays on the grey side (like the one posted by a BC'er) but a lot (like the one on ebay seems to be doing) start acquiring some off-green type shade which looks like something vaguely rotting. Not my preferred colour scheme I'm afraid...
Ahhhh, so refreshing! Normally people like the later stuff and not the holy bible. It's a work of art. No idea about the basses, but are you sure Nicky played his own parts on this one?
I'm not sure if he did either. I think the early stuff is a bit of a grey area as to who does what, could be that some bass stuff was recorded by Bradfield whilst Wire was still getting to grips with the instrument.

There used to be a story that Chris Squire used to use a flattened dime coin - now that's a *man's* pick! personally I say whatever the song requires. It's all about the music, not some snobby convention.
Nah. You can buy a bass that looks, plays & sounds pretty much identical to that for about a hundred quid. If I had £8000 to blow on a bass, I'd get my head examined. Jon.
Go on Jon admit it, if you had £8K for basses you'd buy 80 more pieces of Japcrap and open a museum

My take on the whole thing was that Turner seems to have very convincing provenance that what he has sitting in his studio is a genuine Ritter and if pushed I'm sure Ritter himself would happily confirm that. It all seems to hinge on the serial number. The one Turner has and the one in the music shop which is almost identical share the same serial number apparently. I say 'apparently' as the only evidence of this is supposedly someone made a quick visual check on the one being sold, I never actually saw a photo of the serial number on the 'fake' anywhere in the thread. However if we take on trust the two instruments do share the same SN then either something's gone wrong with the numbering system at Ritter or the one sold is dodgy. The music shop haven't done themselves any favours by selling it on pretty quickly after being contacted and warned that there could be some doubt over its authenticity. I'm not sure about the market for knock-off high end intruments. Yes, there could potentially be a big mark up on each individual fake but it's a very niche market and in the internet age a higher risk of being found out as well. Looks like the thread's been closed by the admin Turner now!
