As a lifelong EC fan I must admit the first number was n't great........ Anyone got the album yet, any good?
Didn't see Later last night as I was at Hillsborough watching my team give a footbaling lesson to the home side However I have heard the latest EC album and on initial listen at least find it somewhat underwhelming and I normally quite like the chap. It seems to lack the passion that something like 'From the Cradle' did.

Yep, know what you mean except I haven't started looking for a new project yet. I'd been in a pretty average blues rock covers band over the last six months but there were a few things creeping in that I was getting a bit non plussed by, some fairly unprofessional behaviour which surprised me considering they are all more experienced players than me. I was on the verge of quitting when I got a call to the effect that they thought it wasn't working out so I jumped at the chance to walk away from it. The fact that the band leader gave the job of phoning to the keyboard player rather than have the balls to speak to me directly spoke volumes.

My personal fave from that album has always been Yours Is No Disgrace. It's like a one-stop bass tutorial, all sorts of aspects crafted and seamlessly put together with none sounding out of place for wherever the song is at that particular place. Lovely walking lines for a start...

Wakeman was indeed an in-demand arranger and performer for sessions prior to his first stint in Yes. Think he's playing on the odd track or two on Sabbath Bloody Sabbath as well.
Yesterdays. Or as we called it, "That pissing kid". http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yesterdays_(Yes_album)
America was also released as a single (must have been an edited version) as I distinctly recall it being on the juke box in the student union bar that was my 'second home' from 1982-83.

Thought someone would have mentioned Pat Metheny by now. Recommend the whole of the first volume of the 'Works' compilation. Didn't care so much for the second vol but the first is great chillout stuff. This is on it for instance; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KT4kKSi5eoU

If it's a reasonably well paying gig I'd pick up a cheap Shine violin bass (they actually sound OK though the one I saw up close several times I couldn't play as it was a lefty) and sell it on afterwards, probably wouldn't make a massive loss.

That sort of thing could get him in Hot Water though...

Wouldn't worry about it, first rule of live bands backing a known front artist - *no one* is looking at the bass player

Seems a while ago I saw her on this tour as it was only the second night (intimate little venue in Sheffield). Still on good form vocally. First saw her on the Queen Secret Keeper tour a few years back (she doesn't get up north much these days). I could have seen her back in the early 80's but passed up the chance for some reason. Bailey did a decent set as support but her voice has still a way to go before it' as good as mum's

Have you considered doing jazz reworkings of rock and pop standards? Hayseed Dixie made a good living off hillbilly tributes of well known classics, it would give you some creative input doing the arrangements. I know there have been recorded swing versions of rock stuff by the likes of Paul Anka and Pat Boone but you don't see it in pubs and clubs, might be a niche to exploit?

I might be over in the hand on Heart on Sat night so if I get to town early enough I might pop over to the Falcon first for a shot of venom...
thanks guys, some good songs there, some i'd forgotten, I thought of ...Man on the silver mountain, Burn & Addicted to love. Any more? didn't want overplayed (all right now, smoke on...., paranoid) stuff, it's too predictable, yeh?
Burn is a pretty difficult song to nail if you're not 100% sure of your drummer!

There are pubs closing in Nottingham that were known venues and they aren't just changing management. Some are being boarded up. The Running Horse was probably known nationally on the blues circuit but that venue has been completely boarded up for months. I'm becoming a little concerned that as the working men's club circuit dries up a lot of the acts in those places basically doing glorified kareoke will start playing pubs instead and, as they are 1 or 2 person outfit, can completely undercut a 3 or 4 piece band and still make more money per person.
Is your bootleg the "Twelve Towers at Dawn" one? Superb quality with a stunning version of "On the silent wings of freedom" I've had it on vinyl for years.
I don't think it has a title as such but it was recorded in Quebec City, might be the same recording as a lot of bootlegs end up getting different titles but same source. If it is not and you'd like an mp3 copy feel free to PM me. There are a few live bootlegs in the download I made as a job lot but this seemed good quality, I get distracted with the ones that have people talking all over them from audience recordings.
Marvellous. And you can hear the bass to. I spent some while trying to pick bits out of Roundabout a while back where the bass seemed lost a lot of the time. Talking to the drummer in my proggy project yesterday and he asked if I had ever wanted a Rick. Said in my youth it had always been a dream because of Chris Squire and he mentioned that CS had used Fenders on a lot of studio stuff.
I'm sure I read somewhere that one of the band said the original Roundabout didn't have any bass on it at all, it was all done on guitars. Might have been off their tits on wacky backy though...
Fabulous! Alan White's really cookin' too. I've been on a YES trip for a a few days, trying to get rid of the Jeff Berlin memories of the week. I can't stop listening to the version of Siberian Khatru from Keys to Ascension, it's sublime. Thanks for posting this clip mate.
Didn't Berlin fill in for Tony Levin on some Anderson, Bruford, Wakeman & Howe live stuff? never got round to hearing it though. I recently downloaded a good quality bootleg from the Tormato tour, sounds like it's taken off the desk. No 'Going For The One' on it but some interesting stuff from the much malignedTormato album.

Don't think I've ever had a real dog which is lucky as most of them have been bought untried and second hand. Probably the most underwhelming (and it was bought on a whim) was a Burns Bison. Not an original 60's one but one of the far east reissues that came out a few years back. It was black but a cheap looking matt finish and I never seemed to get a tone from it that I really liked plus the headstock end of the neck felt like it was miles away. It lasted about 6 weeks before being sold on but got virtually what I paid for it so no harm done.
-
Saw Glenn on Weds in Nottm, couldn't make out any logo on the headstock but the lighting wasn't great. Looked to have plenty of wear on it, genuine rather than faked 'road worn' effected. Despite having a bit of a cold and being vocally undermixed for the first part of the set he sounded in good form for someone who must be well into his 50's by now. Still hitting some unfeasibly high notes! Bass playing pretty nifty in places as well, works the crowd like the real pro he is. Storming version of Burn for the encore.
-
For my current lot I'm stuck with the utterly tedious Hideaway. Supposedly they do this to 'warm up and check the mix is right'. I gently pointed out after a few gigs where we didn't sound check (and still usually don't) that it would be better to start with something that at least has vocals in it to get the full mix. About another 10 gigs down the line and....yep we are still opening with Hideaway and then someone comes up to our lead singer/guitarist at the half time interval and tells him that they couldn't hear the vocals, nearly every gig. Words fail me.
-
Yep, if you want to hear some old stuff you are better off going to a Bravado gig these days than waiting for the real thing
-
So any time you need to look at the jack socket or pots you'd need to take the whole scratch plate off?
Aint that the truth!
He's no mug on bass either but I'm running the risk of hijacking this thread so I'd better stop
-
Still find them utterly overrated, they'd be better off with a different singer. I went to see Glenn Hughes last night. He's got more soul & funk in his little finger than Jay Kay has in his entire body.
