A great source of different variations around a theme is Stevie Ray Vaughn's 'Pride & Joy' which has become something of a standard. Listen closely to Tommy Shannon's bassline, he brings in a new variation with each chorus but keeps it identifiable as all fitting the same song. It's only about 3 1/2 mins long but plenty of good stuff in there to work with.

Influenced by Chris Squire, must be a decent bloke...

Next few to have a look at for my covers band will be Riverboat Song Still Got The Blues I've Got A Line On You Black Night Stop (Joe Bonamassa version) See The Light (if anyone has an accurate tab for this I'd appreciate it) Get Over It Wind Cries Mary Sylvia (got a feeling this will be trickier than it first appears...)

With my Trace GP7 combo I already had the 7 band EQ, compressor and 'shape' knobs to muck about with. Then I bought a Hartke Bass Attack pedal with various knobs to play with so I thought I wouldn't have to bother with anything on the amp any more but I've found I get the best sound for my current band by using all of them! I'm sure some will be cancelling out others but to go through all the possible permutations to figure which are absolutley essential would probably take days.

I filled in with a house band hosting a jam session on Sun afternoon. Usually lots of bass players turn up so I thought it would be easy money. Turned out I was the only out and out bass player there, ended up playing 7 or 8 sets with various line ups. Totally knackered by the end of it...

Didn't see it as I was out supprting proper live music Yes I have a recorder but just couldn't be bothered. Now I've discovered from this thread that Jonathan Ross was involved I'm happy I made the right decision. Surely there can't be much time left on his contract? Please BBC just pay him off and get rid now.
Nothing wrong with that - great song!
I think I've topped that now, last night I was doing John Paul Jones' 'Love Is In The Air'. It's all because I'm covering for a jam session this weekend and I suspect some these might come up so I'm trying to prepare myself! Better brush off Sunny Afternoon as well if the weather stays as it is...

Rhinestone Cowboy. Don't ask. No really, just don't.

Made under Licence from Mackie, Tapco are lower priced alternatives. I have a J2500 (2500 watts max at 4ohms bridged) that was bought for a project that fizzled out. It has NEVER been used, absolutely as new. The specs are here; http://www.dolphinmusic.co.uk/product/4240...ies-j-2500.html It is now discontinued. I had it flight cased and will include that with the sale, flight case cost £80 alone. I think the amp was about £250. As it has never been used I'm selling for £200 BUT it is a heavy item. I'm based in Nottingham and could meet a reasonable distance away for petrol money or buyer collects but I'm not going to ship it. Not desperate to sell, it might be a handy back up for the band I've recently joined but their kit seems pretty reliable so it might as well go to a new home.

Just to get back to the OP, I've accumulated several versions by Sabbath, the original studio vs seems to be normal tuning (though it might be a tad out due to tape speed issues) but some of the live recordings are definitely detuned whilst others aren't. This doesn't really help I know...

Thanks for the link, if no one on here comes up with one I'll probably order 2 or 3 of red and green to make it worthwhile then I'll always have spares. On closer inspection they only seem to have black available! Back to the drawing board. Loiter around gigs and thieve one off someone else? Nah, couldn't do that.

Got a 1 x 15 Trace combo (GP7 series) and I noticed last night at a gig that the green disc on the master volume knob had dropped out, can't find it in the car so it may have gone doing the load in. Anyone have a spare or know where I could pick one up, nothing on eBay at first glance. Bizarrely I once had one of these very things in a spares box and I think I passed it on to someone on the old forum who was desperate for one. I know they are only cosmetic but it would be nice to get it back to original looks as its in very good nick otherwise.

'Normal' Rehearsal schedules - EDIT: Oh what an update! Enjoy!
KevB replied to Musicman20's topic in General Discussion
With the latest covers band I've joined we had precisely 1 rehearsal with the whole band present before my first gig with them. I had another 2 short sessions with one or two of the other guys but only the 1 with the drummer present and we never played anything more than once. I was slightly nervy about the first gig but it went reasonably well all things considered. We still don't have a proper regular rehearsal slot booked. A good thing is to have live recording of the actual band doing the set to work from, really useful to get the intro/outtro and any arrangements that differ from the original recordings learned in advance. I'd plike to rehearse a bit more to get a bit tighter with the drummer but I think it'll just have to come as we're gigging. Definitely will require some more practice sessions to work up new tunes for the set though. -
I've never come across a TE combo with an output for an extension speaker that wasn't 8ohms, mine certainly is. They are about 300W total output at 4ohms with the extension cab attached. I initially had a TE 4X10 extension with the 1X15 combo but it was a heavy rig to shift around. I've been using it for the last few years with an 8ohm SWR workingmans 2x10 that I picked up very reasonably on this forum, they seem to work well together. Still quite heavy though!

I don't think the band are going to pursue it, they have no written contract. At first the bar man I spoke to on arrival claimed the band's web site had us down to play another venue on the date, blatant lie. New manager claimed he'd had 'no contact' from the band since he took over and wasn't sure we'd turn up. The band member who'd booked it originally told him he knew there was a change of management since the original booking was made so specifically rang up 3 weeks ago to make double sure we were still booked and confirm it in the pub's diary, which a memeber of pub staff did. We were then told that bar person had since been sacked. How convenient. If new management want to come in and rebook bands who they are mates with that's up to them but at least have the decency to let the originally booked band know so we don't turn up with cars full of gear on the night. With the attitude we were given I think it more likely we'll just drop the venue from our list of places worth playing.
-
But this was to be my first gig with an established band who've taken me on. As it happened I was the first to get to the venue. Barman says 'Are you with [insert my band name here]? I need to have a word...' The alarm bells were ringing already. There then proceded to be conversations between myself, bar staff, manager and eventually the band member who'd booked the gig and turned up shortly after I did in which at least 2 blatant lies were told to us in order to cover the fact that what had actually happened was that we'd been bumped in favour of a band who's leader happened to be a mate of the manager & his wife (I overheard one of the bar staff giving this detail when he didn't realise I was in earshot). This manager wasn't at the pub when our original booking was made. No offer of any compensation was ever suggested for our wasted time. The band isn't short of gigs, we could hav been playing somewere else. I'm not going to name and shame here but if anyone in Nottinghamshire who might have dealings with them and wants to be pre warned I'm happy to give details in a PM. The venue were at fault and compounded with a very offhand attitude.

http://www.chrissquire.com/tech.html A lot of his pedals are custom made these days but that wouldn't have been the case back in the early 70's.

I think there is a natural 'life expectancy' with a lot of forums, been through it with various ones over the years dating way back to the old days of usenet. Once you get to the point where it seems that most of the 'new' threads that come up you've actually already been involved in a few years earlier by totally different posters it gets less interesting and your post rate naturally drops. I've noticed my posts have really dropped off over the last 6 months or so. Back to original topic, anyone rememebr Chris who posted as Brycebytes or similar? used to have a little green alien as his avatar? Nice guy but can't recall the last time I saw a post by him. He was (think still is) in a rock covers band called Hush.

I was curious to watch it as someone I know ( he's a long time DF fan) provided some archive material which was used. He got invited down to London for the weekend for the premier.

My Guitar Wants To Kill Your Mama Should go down a treat with the in-law to be... -
Agree, I have an S1 jazz and it doesn't really sound like a P with the switch on but it's definitely a different sound. I leave it on most of the time in fact and quite like the slightly ballsier tone.
-
I really wouldn't expect many, if any, to listen to a full track even if they were actually looking for a bass player. Record the full track sure but just pick a short section where the bass is prominent and puts across what you can do favourably and fade in and out around the 'strong' section. Alternatively, as has already been suggested, put together a medley of passages. I wouldn't upload any more than 30sec-1min from any individual piece though.

I'm officially between bands at the moment but currently learning a new set by an established blues/rock covers band who have asked me to join. I'm not going to give details at this stage until it's properly sorted as I've been buggered about by failed 'projects' before. I should be gigging from May onwards so stay tuned and I'll divulge more in due course. It's not remotely ground breaking but it'll get me back on the road after over a year off it which is precisely what I need.

I think Richard (Out To Play Jazz) does a fair bit of this kind of work, worth dropping him a PM too.
