Went to one I've not been to for a while the other night. Open mic/blues jam they are all the same to me its just music. I was glad I wasnt asked to kick it off though as the third song in was friggin red house. I've never actually heard any bass player do it as Hendrix did which is a shame as it's not all that 'conventional' when you really listen to it, quite quirky at times. I just retaliated and did Alright Now. Got to blow some steam off later with Substitute among others https://www.facebook.com/groups/165953396942901/ Dragged them through a slightly chaotic version of Merry xmas everybody as I needed a refresher before playing it at a gig tonight.

Red House, Stormy Monday, Sweet Home Alabama, Alright Now crop up with monotonous regularity too.

Excellent stuff, looking forward to the full story tomorrow. Shame they couldnt have sorted a Tull trib with a faking it Tony Iommi as part of the package😊

Your best (and worst!) bass gear purchases of 2018?
KevB replied to Al Krow's topic in General Discussion
I've just checked and the last bass gear I bought was in August 2017 so nothing at all for the whole of this year, maybe I'm GAS free. To be honest I usually just buy specific things i need for a particular project so there is sometimes a bit of a buying flurry when i join a new band but as it happened i had everything required for the band I joined earlier ths year apart from a distortion pedal and I ended up buying some cheapo thing designed for guitars in the end so I'm not counting that. -
They would have to be for me, had to avert my gaze from the bass player when the buzzard came out. They look bad enough in photo's but in real life... yuck. Each to their own I guess.

Actually, I've got that wrong. I'm seeing them on Sat night at Rock city. I keep thinking today is Friday as I have tomorrow booked off work😃

I think the lineup (apart from bass due to Trevor Bolder passing away) has been reasonably stable for 10+ years but they have always had a fair number of muso's going through the ranks. Mick Box must have been the only original member for decades by now.

I'm off to VHB / UH tomorrow night. Fingers crossed for a decent mix, VHB deserve sound techs to do their job as they always seem to give 100% with their performances. Not seen UH for about 15 years!

Yes I checked the dates, neither London or Manchester are close enough for me to have gone anyway. Not that long ago I saw SB but I've never seen Flower KIngs (or whatever version exists now).

Didnt know they were touring together, probably too late for me now anyway.

Cheap Trick and Def Leppard for me too, on Saturday. I did hang around for Def Leppard and though not a particularly big fan they put on a terrific show technically, excellent lightshow and background projections. Well done to the techs putting this on for the band. Cheap Trick showing their age (arent we all?) but still a good performance. They work better in a smaller club envireonment though.

They didn't use a bass player for gigs but they had a few session men on some of the original albums

Rehearsal with bass player patiently explaining to the drummer how the song actually goes. We've all been there😉 Have a great first gig and make sure there are plenty to follow.

I think Danny Thompson (on John Martyn albums) is also on some Richard Thompson stuff so may be worth checking that out too.

Squire on just about anything but an honourable mention for Time & A Word album. However I'm going to pick an isolated rhythm section track to show just how unique he was at the time

I haven't been to see Tull for a few years now. A mate of mine and me used to go to most of the tours since the mid 80's. Even that far back Ian Anderson had suffered vocal issues but seemed to find a way round it. However by the time Martin Barre left a few years back we were looking at each other at the end of gigs and saying 'this is getting embarassing now, think its perhaps time to stay home'. I'm sure IA still gets a kick out of performing and as long as there is some sort of audience he's entitled to do so but when it gets to the point you are taking an additional vocalist on stage the writing's on the wall. Whitesnake went the same way, the last couple of times I saw them you were hearing the backing band singing as much in the mix as Coverdale's pale shadow of the voice he once had. Time waits for no man but it's inevitably crueller on singers on the whole.

In Cliff's case it's probably part of his settlement agreement with the BBC that they have to give hime a certain amount of prime airtime over the next x years.

Newly-discovered love of Trevor Bolder's playing
KevB replied to bassbiscuits's topic in General Discussion
Not just Bowie, some good lines with Uriah Heep too. -
I think if I was pretty sure I wouldnt be recognised and there was little chance of any muso's in the audience (as seems to be the case in the OP) I'd probably do it with xmas approaching.

Gerry Rafferty and Billy Connoly, from the same band. -
Does anyone in any genre make significant money from album sales alone these days?

Always thought Tea Party were as much Doors influenced as anything else but you have a point. I'll see your Kingdom Come and raise you a Michael White.
