1. At the first (and for me last) get together I was standing about 3 feet from Mick and I couldn't hear him at all above the guitar volume. That's why I asked them to turn down, I was pretty much having to look at the drums and guessing where I was supposed to be locking in rather than hearing them.
2. Maybe musically unexpected but if you read about how Tony Stratton ran Charisma then entirely feasible.
3. This is an interersting point. I didn't mention it while you were in the band but the rest of your band mates wanted me for a side project they planned to do outside of TL. I turned up to run through some songs and asked them to turn down twice at the session (small village hall) due to the stupid gtr volume levels and I was still at approx twice the vol I used to gig at with my previous classic rock band. I told your band leader that we were never asked to turn up. He looked at me and said 'Well I would have'. Texted him next day to tell them it wasn't going to work out and quit the project.
4. Not been on the site for a while but just had a quick browse over this thread. Looks a real blast of a gig and went well, great stuff sir.
5. Currently learning War Pigs. I'll definitely be improvising over the guitar solo. Never been able to play Immigrant song chorus at correct speed without blurring the notes either.
6. I must say he looked pretty frail on their recent tour but it's still a bit of a shock, RIP Mr Torpey.
7. I saw that line up at an Alexis Korner memorial gig at Buxton Opera House. It was all a bit thrown together and approximate at times but they got through it!
8. Either Woodstock or the Isle of Wight one where the Doors played.
9. As the majority of those are tributes to acts that are now dead they certainly arent taking gigs from the originals that's for sure.
10. Saw them in 87 in a tiny club in Nottingham, Tyla was off his tits half the gig even then. Think he did some songs completely lying down. Happy days...
11. Not in same league musically as Rob 'no pens' Palmer but I have had a similar sort of journey, albeit at a rather more mundane pub level. I'm pickier about what sort of projects I get involved in and the players involved. I have no qualms in walking away if they don't pan out quite as expected. If this means doing fewer gigs and less spare cash around then so be it. I have other interests so its easy for me to simply spend more time doing other non bass related things when I'm between bands.
12. After the changeing of the guard on guitar and the unleashed exhuberence of Perperndicular I think the follow up Abandon got a bit short changed and underappreciated. There are some very good tunes on it.
13. Seeing Mr Big (and hopefully some of The Answer if I get there in time) tonight then off to Brum to see Europe and Deep Purple tomorrow.
14.
I played a gig, through one of these a while ago. It sounded epc with my Precision and they are cheap as chips secondhand. I didn't attempt to pick it up but I suspect it's very heavy.
One of these, coupled with a 2x10 ext cab (not trace) has been my gigging rig for years. I expect a 2x10 Trace combo with a 1x15 ext cab would sound much the same though. I injured my back at work years ago but still manage to haul the combo in and out of the car to gigs. Consider it character building Actually the 2x10 SWR ext cab isn't a lot lighter than the Trace combo.
15. They are just trying to cover as many genres as possible but keeping it to 20 total as typical cliched online lists go, hence they have Zep so can't have Deep Purple, they have Floyd so can't have Genesis or Yes. It's all pretty pointless.
16. One thing I do like about the Fender cloth covered one that someone bought for me and I've been using for several trouble free years is that because of the covering it naturally 'wants' to curl in a way when it's being put away that makes it very difficult to twist or create hairpin bends in yet it unfolds and doesnt create loops when in use. I'm sure this has contributed to its longevity.
17.
Von Hertzen Brothers next Thursday.
Saw them last night. Make sure you are up to speed with the new album, they are playing a lot of it.
18. Saw Von Hertzen Brothers last night, great show. Exactly the sort of thing Jools should have on to pep things up while they are in the country. Never happen of course.
19.
No. Ironically, huh?
This is veering toward Python's 'Arthur two sheds Jackson' territory now...
20. An oft overlooked guitarist in Mr Mitchell. Was a bit surprised how Zappa-ish some of their stuff was when I finally got round to tracking their albums down.
21.
Presumably Bilbo is now referred to as "His Nibs"?
He's the fountain of jazz knowledge round these parts.
22. Nice, bit Pat Metheney-esque. Would have been good to have seen the bass player and drummer, though it might be she has recorded the bass track herself and is playing along to a recording?
23.
Don't just leave us all hanging. Do you?
You read my mind. Sod the bass stuff, it's all about the pens.
24.
Alan Lancaster was one of the reasons I took up Bass, nothing over complicated but just seemed to nail the Quo groove along with John Coghlan , they were never the same after they sacked them
Absolutely, I meant that I hadn't heard him playing outside of Quo to make a comparison with.
25. I don't know about Alan Lancaster but as far as Rhino Edwards in Quo is concerned you only have to hear his work with Judy Tzuke to tell he's a more than competent bass player. Some very strong players in Chickenfoot but M Anthony seems to hold his own.
