Were thinking of actually forming a band and doing proper gigs etc.. but we want to know if we might even have a potential audience.
Yeah, go for it! I like it
-
I don't think it's harder - URBs don't have lines, do they? Cheap fretless 5s seem really hard to come by so I'm lucky I got mine when I did (£345 on here) - your best bet might be to just de-fret one! You'll have to put up with the lines if you do that though
-
Are you dead set on an unlined fretless or is that just a coincidence? I prefer them unlined but my fully fretless actually has lines...
They're being sold by Fairdeal muic for £619. http://www.fairdealmusic.com/guitars/bass_...gwb105-5-string I think that Ibanez have renamed the GWB35 and it's now the GWB105, it's available in a natural wood finish which is like the one that Gary plays, and I think looks better.
Ah, I had been wondering what the difference was... personally I prefer my black one! Is it just the finish that's changed??? Maybe if I find another fretless 5 I like more then mine'll be up for sale, but the chances of that happening soon look slim!

I'm gonna have to disagree with the "4 string, fretted" part - IMO it's no harder to learn a fretless 9-string if that's what you started on... the best way to decide is to look at what basses your favourite bassists are playing - more often than not that will be a 4-string fretted but if your ultimate aim is to play like Jaco or John Myung, you're probably choosing the wrong instrument! The fact that you've suggested getting a fretless or a 5-string implies that you would like to do something a bit different from the norm

for those who like grolsch 'straplocks'...
queenofthedepths replied to kingforaday's topic in Accessories and Misc
What a terrible website.
+100 I like my red Grolsch straplocks on my black bass - or maybe if I can get some cheap black washers, I'll put the red ones on my GREEN bass -
Yeah, that's what I mean - that way you can play a perfect fourth down when the guitars are in D# - I've just remembered (you'd expect me to realise...) that my band play in those tunings as well - when the guitars tune down to dropped C# I do the same and just don't use the bottom string in those songs - I did actually used to play the lower notes on the bottom string instead (I got my first 5-string just so I could do this and quite happily played in standard tuning whilst the guitarist re-tuned from E to C to dropped D ), but if the guitarists have time to re-tune, so do we! Still, it's a good work-out to learn your material in different tunings and in different positions, so I would definitely recommend getting a 5-string if only for that reason... if you can't get used to playing like that, you may as well just re-tune when you have to (or get a Hipshot D-tuner if re-tuning is too much of a pain - it's cheaper than a new bass! But presumably not as fun )
-
If you could persuade the rest of the band to tune down another half step, this would be very easy - tuning a B up to C is fine (I used to do so all the time and John Myung from Dream Theater does it in As I Am, I believe)... if you're totally against that though, tuning up a whole step shouldn't be too bad - what scale length is the 5-string you're looking at? If I were you I'd also have go playing it in A# for a while - you might be surprised how much use you can get out of those extra notes!
-
Dont forget to take off the strings and the scratchplate and replace the potcover with a 1mm thin piece of ill fitting plastic!! But wait, set the action really low on the E string and put some paper under there to get rid of the fretbuzz.
Eliminate fretbuzz altogether by not including any strings! If you look in the background on the last pic, you can see that he copied the design from one of his shoes!
-
I play 5-string fretless myself and I'd be in a right state without my low B! So you may as well get a 5; there's no reason not to, right?
-
You might want to make sure the machine head for the A string is all screwed on tight - I had the very same problem you described and this was solved by tightening it up

When did someone put a big notice on BC saying 'Sell Here'?
queenofthedepths replied to warwickhunt's topic in Site News
There's at least one seller on the first page who is 'no longer a newbie' on the strength of his 'bump' posts. Mind you I doubt he'll sell too much at the prices he's asking.
True, but I'm not going to buy anything from anyone I don't recognise from other parts of the forum unless I have any other reason to trust them! Also as I understand it, posts in Off Topic don't count towards your overall post count? I'd be more inclined to trust someone with several hundred posts in Off Topic than someone whose posting is limited to selling in the marketplace! -

Anyone who doesn't bother to take the time to introduce themselves and become a recognised member of the forum is shooting oneself in the foot really, because I for one wouldn't buy from a Newbie with no feedback! But anyone who does want to buy from such unknown entities will surely appreciate this service? -
911tabs.com is great, especially if you have guitar pro (if you don't, you should get it coz it's brilliant and well worth the money www.guitar-pro.com) - which songs do you need to learn? The most accurate are those on the Ultimate Guitar Archive, preferably rated higher than 3 out of 5

Possibly the most efficient bass line ever?
queenofthedepths replied to Kiwi's topic in General Discussion
"spy in the cab" by Bauhaus the single note on the bass sounds like a tuned drum http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lUfUTV1JqU4
There are 5 notes in that! A slide at 2:16, followed by E, D, C, B (well, maybe... I wasn't paying THAT much attention) -

Advice for a rock bassist wanting to expand horizons!
queenofthedepths replied to Bigwan's topic in General Discussion
There are plenty of rock bands that incorporate other styles - you could try listening to some of these and learning their stuff to give you new ideas before actually moving on to completely different stuff? Which bands/bassists do you play like, do you think? -
Or if you like a bit of death metal http://youtube.com/watch?v=W5ciJcksiEU&feature=related
well noticed! i aint been in widnes for more than a couple of days in the last year, unfortunatly bristol have got me for good now!
Hahaha, lucky us! +1 on the Bristol bass bash - there are plenty of basschatters in the south west and south Wales -
I used to have a 6-string one and I enjoyed it very much - if you like how it sounds, I think you should definitely get it; I only got rid of mine coz I have no need for a 6-string any more

Just sold Kev my ODB3 - no hassle at all and a lovely guy
