Still lost. You are putting the cart before the horse. There is only music - 6 string is what you play it on. If you want to play all the notes play some scales. Its like buying a box of spanners and thinking - what shall I take apart, or getting a ride on mower and wondering what grass to cut.
Once you have a new tool, why not learn to use it? There are definitely some things which can't be done on 4 but can be done on 6 and even more which can be done on both but are easier to play with extra strings... That said, I can't really think of many non-Dream Theater songs that require 6 strings - the guy from American Head Charge uses one? Your best bet is probably to write a load yourself!
Weather Report were a hybrid of world/jazz/fusion. Their whole catalogue is a panolpy of jazz/jazz funk/jazz rock/fusion/pop - just goes to show how inadequate labels can be. My favourite WR CDs are 'Night Passage', 'Mr Gone', 'Heavy Weather' and 'Procession'. 'Black Market' and 'Domino Theory' have some great tracks (Db waltz is COOKIN') but I prefer the first four I have listed. Oh and that Alphonso Johnson guy is seriously underated!
I just got hold of Heavy Weather on the weekend and it's rather awesome! Thanks for the recommendation - I shall seek out some more Weather Report now

There we go then! http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=...mp;#entry145562

Brilliant! I'm certainly looking forward to the family snapshot! Although one has to wonder why you don't just get a perspex Iron Bird ("perspex bird" hasn't got the same ring to it, admittedly) and put different lights behind it to make it appear different colours? That'd be cheaper AND insanely cool!
What I want to know is - what's "Fedner guitarse" mean? (And looking at his post I don't accept it's a typo)
That is a deliberate typo - it's meant to look dodgy

I suppose GAS comes from a variety of sources - you hear someone play something lovely on a particular bass, you play someone else's, you read a good review or just see a pic on basschat and suddenly you want your own... or you actually "rationally" think that it'd be useful! I'm sure we've all had GAS for various basses for various reasons, but what's your number one cause? I think my main one is seeing basses for sale on here/ebay/anywhere and being able to afford it - if it looks nice and I have the space, I just have to have it!
Samson? I find ability is often inversely proportional to strap length. Alex
I think it's actually more to do with the fact that I haven't had a proper haircut since I started playing bass I wonder if I change my hairstyle, will I magically master different genres? Ability is inversely proportional to the square of the deviation from the optimum strap length! Plus or minus the effect of nerve-calming drugs multiplied by the co-efficient of stage fright ...back on topic I think a lot of bassists are very defensive about their choice of instrument, armed to the teeth with arguments against stupid claims like "you're all just failed guitarists" - this can make them come across as genuinely deluded and bitter about having to be the bassist

I would, but I can't! Unless you wanna tell me your password
Perry - Are you saying that we're all nice on here but when you meet us in the shop we're total c**ts? I can't speak for anyone else, but that's me down to a T!
Yeah, me too! I'm horrible in real life
i avoid anyone with long hair as i know they will be a guitarist
Don't say that - I've wasted too much time and money on basses to be told now that I'm playing the wrong instrument! Or do I just need a haircut? I'm sure my ability is increasing in correlation to the length of my hair...
Customs duty is not payable on goods bought from countries within the EU. However, VAT is payable (if due) either in the EU country of purchase, or in the UK if the EU supplier is UK VAT registered
Also worth mentioning, I think And possibly a link to the page from where I got it?
To all the wiki detractors: try doing something positive about it. http://wiki.basschat.co.uk/info:buying:importing_gear There - an article about duty on importing goods. Feel free to correct it, edit it, add to it. Maths? Ha, I've heard of it. In response to QOTD - no, I'm not precious at all about my contribution. I will not be offended if someone who knows better than me comes along and sorts out my mistakes.
I take it you're referring to this bit:
Total cost before charges = £150 Customs duty = 3.5% of £150 = £5.25 (therefore waived) VAT = 17.5% of £150 = £17.50 Total cost = £117.50
I believe it should read:
Total cost before charges = £150 Customs duty = 3.5% of £150 = £5.25 (therefore waived) VAT = 17.5% of £150 = £26.25 Total cost = £176.25
I can't log into the wiki myself, but once this is sorted, I shall definitely be more than willing to while away some hours on there - who knows; this may even be more productive than reading random threads on here and posting half-baked opinions Anyway, a question for those of you who have contributed (and will do so in the future) to the wiki: If you've written something useful and then someone comes along and edits it hugely to correct the spelling, punctuation and grammar and generally make it more stylistically readable, would you be offended that your contribution has been adjusted? What I'm saying here is that whilst I don't have any worthwhile technical expertise, I can quite happily cross people's Ts and dot their Is until the cows come home, but only to make it as presentable as possible to the reader; the last thing I want is to come across as a pedantic dickhead (pedantic yes, dickhead no) I'm fairly used to seeing tiny mistakes on Wikipedia and being unable to resist putting them right; on there it's common practise to do so... on basschat I'm a bit concerned that some of you will be pissed off at me for fussing around and changing your stuff, but I'm of the opinion that the wiki should be as tidy, presentable and readable as possible; a wealth of information is of no use if it can't be read

Can't you just use 2 straps? I guess that'd cost a little bit more though... I'd be more inclined to just use a wider, softer strap. Some straps cut into your shoulder a lot more than others, whilst some spread the load very nicely. £15.95 is pretty cheap though - but that makes me wonder what the quality is like.

Wow - those are delicious and very interesting-looking basses!!! Which makes you all the more welcome here Just so you can get used to my pedantry, starting words with Ss is sussonance and with vowels it's aspirance! And 7 (or any finite number, for that matter) is never too many! You look a bit young to be married though?
-
As I understand it, "simple" means that each beat is divided evenly - "complicated" is obviously the opposite Anddd the other 3 refer to how many notes of equal length fit into the space of one crotchet Apologies if that turns out to be way off the mark - I'm sure somebody else will provide a far more educated answer
-
The advantage of asking questions that have already been answered is that you can get a personalised response - the wiki, if it weren't so bare, would be great for explaining stuff like how to package a bass or wattage-volume to those who don't know, but for questions like "I want to tune to dropped G# for my sludge doom band - what strings would you recommend?", a new thread is only to be welcomed. The same old tired questions can be a bit annoying, but if one can't find the thread where they were originally answered (and the search function isn't very easy to use), how can you blame people? But every time a new question is successfully and usefully answered, what's to stop the consensus being typed up in the wiki? And surely the gist of almost every sticky thread should be in there?
I think your poll needs more flexibility - I have occasionally had a look through the wiki so I wouldn't say any of the three options are applicable.
Same here... can't say I've ever found it useful though... 'tis faaar too much of a mess - sadly I don't have the necessary expertise to add anything to it but if more people did then it would presumably be much easier to use than pinned threads

Fretless acoustic
Personally I'd steer clear & stump up the extra to get a harley benton 5 string fretless acoustic from thomann. Fretless acoustic
queenofthedepths replied to queenofthedepths's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
Very true! I also noticed that they offered a free strap, spare strings and a gigbag, but none of these are pictured... -
Am I the only person who thinks that looks the shizzle as it is??
-
This does look like junk and I don't like the look of the headstock (I'm also more interested in a 5-string unlined but that'd have to cost quite a bit more, unless anyone's seen one going cheaply anywhere...) http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Fretless-Electro-Aco...1QQcmdZViewItem Can anyone see any not-so-obvious reason I shouldn't throw away £74 on one of these?

Sorry to be pedantic, but the question is grammatically incorrect He's either unique or he isn't, so perhaps you should say "To what extent is Jaco Pastorius unique?" I don't have much to add regarding Jaco's influences but perhaps it'd be an idea to look at those who have taken influence from Jaco and maybe determine whether he can still be "unique" after being copied, even if he was "original" at the time

Ebay experts, I need your advice
queenofthedepths replied to TDM's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
Yes, thats what I emailed him proposing. But like I said, based on his previous actions, I doubt his credibility, so he may get the money and not keep his end of the bargain. But I guess I'll worry about that after I try to get the money from Royal Mail.
He'd have no reason not to - he'd have his money AND the lego (assuming he's a scammer), your friend would have the money he wanted, and if he withdraws the negative feedback, you won't report him to ebay, saving him a bit of trouble... everyone's happy - he has nothing to gain by holding a grudge against an honest seller. Good luck getting the money from Royal Mail though; I should imagine this would be the hard bit. -

If you can get the money from Royal Mail, tell him you'll refund him once he withdraws his feedback? -
Help with left hand technique??
queenofthedepths replied to silverfoxnik's topic in Theory and Technique
If you can set your metronome to 9:8, try this one: G 4-3-----2-1-------|------------------|------------------|------------------|------------------|--------5-4-3-2---| D ----4-3-----2-1-4/|5-4-----3-2-------|------------------|------------------|--------6-5-4-3-6\|5-4-3-2-----------| A ------------------|----5-4-----3-2-5/|6-5-----4-3-------|--------7-6-5-4-7\|6-5-4-3-----------|------------------| E ------------------|------------------|----6-5-----4-3-6/|7-6-5-4-----------|------------------|------------------| And then repeat up one fret until your hand falls off... It's much better/worse on 5-strings and ERBs Sorry if the tab's not very easy to follow!
