1. I'd say definitely go for a 5-string - it opens up a lot more options such as tuning your B up to C or your E down to D... the guitarist in my band plays mainly in dropped D but I play my 5-string in standard - of course, if you don't really use your G string you can just string your current bass with a low B! If playing up one fret when you're supposed to be tuned in C is far too much of a nuisance, you could get a 5-string for tuning to dropped D and take both basses to rehearsals with the first band and the 5-string in standard for the new band? Hell, get a 6-string! What do you have to lose? Sorry for all the conflicting advice there!!!
 2. It'd help if people posted requests for specific loops
 3. Wheeereabouts are you? I'm guessing you don't want to post that lot
 4. Just the one bar here but if anyone's interested in this sort of crazy nonsense I should be able to make some more sequenced drum beats for whatever purpose - just let me know what sort of thing you'd like EDIT: forgot to mention it's 160 BPM
 5.
check this out http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Fender-1962-Jazz-Bas...1QQcmdZViewItem looks pretty nice to me!!
That's delicious! I'd say it's gotta be genuine coz he's not offering to post it... I'm sure it'll go up quite a bit, especially now the whole of basschat can see it
 6.
So... assuming the average string is 100cm long (bridge to machinehead including wraps), and the average bass has 4 strings... then there is a collective ~5.3km (3.3 Miles) of strings between us, it'll be even more if you take into account ERBs and double basses..
I'm sure there are a few spare strings lying around too...
 7.
It's a Tanglewood but it's really nice, apparently there's only 5 or so of these basses in this finish in the UK - got it from Cranes in Cardiff about a year ago-ish. It's great and makes the rest of my basses sound like sh*t
I remember when they had those - they really are lovely and I kinda wish I'd bought one at the time... but surely that's actually unique, rather than being 1 of 5 or so?
 8.
They look awesome! Have you tried them? Has anyone tried them? I don't think I'm entirely sure how you use them.
It drove me insaaane! But my friends seemed to enjoy it... so normal people who enjoy a bit of fun should love them!
 9.
Id never own a bass tuned E-E id get even more wanabe guitarist comments
The obvious answer to that is that guitarists are all wannabe bassists! I love the sound, but I wouldn't be able to play one...
 10.
oh we can have fractions of basses? then+ 0.2 =1305.7
Is that your drumkit? Only one fifth as good as a bass?
 11. Iii LIKE it! Really looking forward to your tour!
 12.
Ummmmmm - plenty of room on the strap. It would make you look more manly and perhaps attract horse-loving groupies Hamster
That sounds all well and good, but do I really want to attract anyone who's into "horse-loving"?
 13.
Eee, that'll be lovely once you've finished the defret.
Hahaha! It actually sounds delicious as it is and is ironically one of my favourite basses to play - of course I could never gig a bass that looked like that... it needs a horseshoe first
 14.
i thought the average will be about 4.2 which would make it 5381 strings. To the nearest string
5355, actually... but that's assuming only one 5-string for every four 4s and no ERBs! But I'm not sure we'd get such a great response if we started a thread asking people to list each of their basses with the number of strings...
 15.
This is a deadly serious matter.
As it should be! Any thoughts on how to attach it to this (anywhere, really) without too much difficulty? I was thinking of taking off the bridge cover and screwing it on just there, but I'd rather not remove anything coz it all adds to the garish factor! 16.
Get him on the basschat! once he joins he'll be hooked Seriously though, it's perked up my interest no end and i'm playing more than ever since I joined. Good luck. Sorry i can't offer anything more substantial
Great advice! Show him a few songs you could teach him to play from different styles and then ask him which he likes best? Or carry on with a few more exercises and stuff? Oh yeah and tell him to get into a band ASAP! That should cure his shyness and bring out the best of his natural abilities - it worked for me! I as a total beginner when I joined my first band and it really gave me some direction with my playing, so he'll be able to tell you what he wants to do with the lessons, rather than you having to dictate the way he learns for him - that should make things easier for you, more interesting for him and of course make him more of an individual in terms of playing style
 17. Welcome to basschat! Great to see an absolute beginner here - [s]now we can mould you in our image and bend your actions to our will[/s] I wish I'd known about basschat when I started; it's a great place to start! I'm sure you'll get flooded with advice so I'll just say that the first 5 of those are kind of essential, whereas drummers we can do without!
 18. That looks pretty good, but unless your pedals are on opposite sides of the room, pretty much any of these are cheaper and more compact: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/GUITAR-EFFECT-PEDAL-...1QQcmdZViewItem
 19.
Given the work-related bit of your problem, I can see why just walking out on the band might be a problem. So ... 200 songs? Easy. The bassline CAN be easier than the guitar part on EVERY song, just like it can also be harder. Forget about what Flea played, or Sting played, or McCartney played. You're not Flea, or Sting, or Macca. Just play what you feel comfortable with and concentrate on the feel and the timing rather than on making a slavish copy of someone else's playing. I picked up a bass for the first time just two years ago. I've spent much of the last eight months going to jam sessions, getting up on stage ready to play literally whatever gets called. Potentially, that's not 200 songs, it's more like 200,000! I'm not fussed about "knowing the bassline" to all those songs. I'm far more interested in playing my own basslines to them all. Sometimes I get it right, too. If you play what feels right to you, and remind the drummer (stuff the guitarist!) from time to time that you're a beginner, you shouldn't have a problem and you'll enjoy playing a lot more. Good luck & keep us posted.
+1 A more useful skill than adding a mere 200 songs to your repertoire is learning how to play your own bass line to a song to which you only know the chord changes or indeed improvising something as you listen - if you audition for another band (which sounds like a good idea...), that'll be what you need to do - learn songs on the spot, adding your own little flourish as you do... but don't worry about the flourishing for now; just concentrate on how to play a song without knoing what the bass line sounds like! The only time this doesn't apply is when the bass line is one which everyone recognises, and these are rarely difficult - it's still worth having a look at some of them, though - the best songs to be able to play are surely those in which the bass gets a bit of recognition from the audience! Anyway, the thing about the actual bass line on the record is that it's just what one bassist decided to play for that particular song, meaning that it's a useful pointer for what you COULD play; not something you have to copy exactly!
 20.
urgh - that looks line the work of an online translation tool! (although to be fair it may be more fitting in this case) okies - my german might be a bit rusty but I'd read it as: Sehr interessanter Prototyp E-Bass aus deutscher Fertigung aus den 60er-Jahren, vermutlich von Framus oder Klira. Der Bass klingt sehr gut und fett.Mehr Hingucker- und Showeffekt geht nicht. Ein sehr spezielles Instrument für sehr spezielle Leute. Very interesting prototype E-Bass made in Germany in the 1960's probably by Framus or Klira. The bass sounds very good and fat. As a head turner and for 'show effect' there's no better. A very special instrument for a very special person.
Right on... come on people - if you're gonna use online translators, a bit of common sense wouldn't go amiss!
 21.
Would also consider a swap for some kind of jazz...
Are you feeling okaeey?!
 22. The band I'm auditioning for next week rehearses twice a week, 30 miles away from where I live - I'm not sure if I can bear the cost of that, especially if I stay in my current band... but it's the most fun I could imagine having, so that's what I'd rather spend my money on!
Mind you, my girlfriend isn't always pleased when we are walking around the shops together and she can tell I just want to hurry and go home to play bass.
Sounds like you're not going to the right shops
 23. For me it's just a hobby I don't get bored with! Before I played bass I used to get bored most days and look around for something to do but since then I can honestly say I have never experienced abject boredom! Playing gigs is an extra bonus coz it's fun and it gives me something to work towards with my playing As for why play bass rather than guitar, I just like low notes better than high ones...
 24.
Do you have to? http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=14 Damn, you're quick QOTD!!!
I really ought to be practising, but whenever I'm not, basschat is basically my life
??????
Yeah, very good point...
Upload pics from your pc to an image hosting site (photobucket or flicker etc) then C&P the IMG code.
But that wouldn't be using the attachment system, would it..? Which that thread doesn't explain how to use... EDIT: So I suppose I should... just below where you type your message (unless you're doing a fast reply which doesn't let you attach stuff), you'll see the Attachment Editor, where you can choose a file (whichever terrifying photo you wish to grace us with) from your computer to upload and then just post it!
 25.
How the f*ck do I insert a pic? I just can't work it out. I was obviously sniffing glue when this was taught at school. Anyone??
http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=14
